...(and that scene [Star Trek?, Simpsons?] where he plays poker with Einstein and Newton. No, sorry. Einstein and Newton might have considered playing poker with de Broglie, Dirac, Heisenberg, Pauli, Planck, Feynman, Oppenheimer, Maxwell, Gell-Mann, Weinberg, Fermi, Gamow, Chandresakar, and any other number of physicists before they'd even consider Hawking on the top table.)
Great self-publicist, mind. And a millionaire, through selling books to people who had no idea what he himself had no idea about...

Re: This weeks RIP's........
Hawking said, quote :
“I believe the simplest explanation is, there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realisation that there probably is no heaven and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe and for that, I am extremely grateful.”
Of course the simplest explanation is to deny God. It puts you up there on an omnipotent level right away. Almost Prufrock like. Depite Stephen Hawking's beliefs. he was careful to add "probably" in his statement......just in case.
His death also prompts the question, "What, all that was for nothing?"

Re: This weeks RIP's........
I grant that a number of his theories or hypotheses (such as multiverses) cannot be proven at this point and may prove eventually to be bollocks. Whether one agrees or not, some of his notions are fascinating. However, I'm too ignorant of theoretical physics to argue any point with you. I just found him interesting and I don't think one has to be proven right to be brilliant...Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Thu Mar 15, 2018 5:01 pmSorry, not a fan.
Admirable that he lived a full life with the cards dealt him.
But on the theoretical physics front not so impressed. To start with he was a fan of the worst theory ever promulgated (i.e. String theory and its hidden rolled up dimensions. Bollox.), and secondly his one big idea hasn't been proven yet, and even if it does it'll turn out to be not that big a deal.
In reality he was just the medya's choice for the next 'einstein' (with his mad scientist looks) once Einstein was too dead to continue the function. [God 'elp us if Brian Cox is nominated as the next Hawking!].

Absolutely. No doubt about it. I'm well on my way to 63. When I was a teenager I'd have considered that to be old age personified. I have considerable latitude now as to what I consider old to be...TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Wed Apr 04, 2018 7:19 pmYes, no age at all to die, you just never know when. Well, I am aiming to break the family record, 104: Average of my grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents is 92.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Wed Apr 04, 2018 7:47 pmCareful buddy, I'll be 79 in September and I'm still seeing that as young..Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Wed Apr 04, 2018 7:25 pmI'm well on my way to 63.
