Re: Tennis, anyone.....?
Most of us here, TANGO, still think that he is a spoiled brat who wants attention, even though he is a damned good player and has, probably, the talent to make his mark in the world of tennis. Likewise, Bernard Tomic, another Australian. Perhaps they will go down in history as the "Terrible Twins".
On the other hand Ashleigh Barty is the exact opposite of those two.

Kyrgios is an absolute disgrace. Far too old now to be behaving like a child. Glad Rafa slapped him down!
Tomic the other day pathetic as well.

The Evans Sousa game. Wow! Tennis at its most absorbing. Typically it had to end in glorious defeat

Tennis, cricket, baseball, rounders, and croquet should be outlawed internationally. In fact any game where a spherical object is hit by a modified stick should be banned... Polo, ping-pong, golf... the list is endless.

Yep. When I'm World President/King, any fxcker using their leg as a modified stick would be banned from playing football.Enoch wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2019 12:50 pmModified stick!Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2019 11:47 amTennis, cricket, baseball, rounders, and croquet should be outlawed internationally. How about 'blow football', Spotty. Does a jet of air constitute a modified stick?
Crikey, until you posted that I hadn't thought about blow football for many a decade. Silly old me.

Errrrrm!? Not sure about that. I mean on one hand, it's not really a spherical object being hit with a modified stick. But on the other hand, it's feckin disgusting, all that redistributed spit...

Roger Federer...6-1,6-2,6-2..against a guy who serves at 136 m.p.h. Awesome display.

To be honest, Berrettini just isn't that good. There just isn't any depth outside the big 3 especially these days.

I'm no tennis authority by any means so I'll take your word for it jmjhb. Just seems some decent stuff being played at the moment.

There's an interesting football parallel between top level quality but predictable winners v lower quality but more competition.
Women's game has been a free for all since before Serena went on maternity. A never ending supply of world #1s who'd never won a major. Osaka comes along and then falls apart in public.
Men's game is about to get a lot more competitive but nowhere near the quality. Arguably 3 of the (say 5) greatest players of all time still playing near their peak (and 4 of the top 20 including Andy Murray who in any other era would've won maybe 8-10 majors). None of the young ones got anywhere near, still. Thiem is Nadal's Danny Guthrie. Zverev and Tsitsipas crumbling come quarters.
We live in a world where is more than possible Nick Kyrgios will win more majors than Andy Murray. Tough times for the bookies ahead.

Re: Tennis, anyone.....?
It’s interesting seeing the longevity of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and warwinka. I remember tennis always seemed to be a younger mans game, with players being ‘past it’ by their late 20s. Saw a fun fact the other day though that no man born after 1988 has ever won a major. That’s essentially a generation of players who’ve missed out.Prufrock wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2019 12:27 amThere's an interesting football parallel between top level quality but predictable winners v lower quality but more competition.

(Back when Miami Vice was in vogue, my youngest lad walked around without socks, his jacket sleeves rolled up and dark sunglasses a la Don Johnson; it was winter and pxssing down most of the time; style man)

Re: Tennis, anyone.....?
Serena Williams can't ever be denied as a women's tennis champ. Since watching her partner Andy Murray in the mixed doubles I don't think I ever quite realised what a powerhouse unit she really is. Frightening.....
