Chairboys v Choirboys; the Wanderers against some Wanderers. Wycombe (a). Sat 3 August - 3pm

Where fellow sufferers gather to share the pain, longing and unrequited transfer requests that make being a Wanderer what it is...

Chairboys v Choirboys; the Wanderers against some Wanderers. Wycombe (a). Sat 3 August - 3pm

Post by Prufrock » Tue Jul 16, 2019 8:53 am

The thinness of Wanderers' squad and it's current lack of experience is well documented.

So young is the current playing squad that not a single member of it was alive the last time Bolton and Wycombe met in competitive action. So few are the current squad that the team coach is rumoured to be a heavily refinanced Vauxhall Zafira.

The Whites travel down to High Wycombe to open up the season in a scarcely believable 18 days, and it is safe to say that pre-season so far has been sub-optimal. One suspects that "ticking off a new ground", or "the bar being open" will be the motivating factors for those making the trip down to Buckinghamshire, rather than expectation of a swashbuckling victory, though with a strong start Bolton could well finish the game in minus single digits (assuming the EFL haven't got another pre-season present saved for the new owners.)

There isn't much to go on, but if you're looking for omens, your writer has played in High Wycombe, coming on as a sub in 3-1 victory against the University of Buckinghamshire as part of an exhilarating 2010 cup run ending in the [checks notes] second round.

I must say I don't know a lot about Wycombe. My only memory of them growing up was their run to the FA Cup semi-finals and in particular the Teletext tyro Roy S&O scoring the winner in the quarter final against Leicester, with manager Lawrie Sanchez watching the end of the game from the tunnel after being sent off.

Google tells me their nickname (the Chairboys) came about because Wycombe is quite famous for... chair-making, which seems to suggest that this set of Wanderers have their very own Tangodancer in charge of nicknames.

In spite of all available information, I'm quite excited for this, and hoping to go if the club can put together an infrastructure capable of selling tickets in time.

In. Whatever the players in the shirts, I’ll be there for the shirts on the players.

Speaking of shirts: apparently Wycombe's kit (light blue, dark blue quarters) is made up of Oxford blue (dark) and Cambridge blue (light).

They should be the ones with a points deduction :vomit:

Would love to go, but I will be raving in a field in deepest Kent that weekend.

If we are looking for omens, the fact the attendance figure for the York game was officially 666 should highlight some Satanic influence against us. Maybe Beezelbub was a mate of Coyle, the little imp.
That's not a leopard!

Well, the club have given up on selling tickets, with Wycombe now directly targeting interested punters (like me). Personally, I might hold off for a day or two.

https://www.wycombewanderers.co.uk/news ... lton-fans/

Wycombe are historically the third-biggest Wanderers, if we ignore the initial mononymous amateurs who won a few early FA Cups, but there's a good chance they'll be overtaking us this season. That hardly matters compared to us having a team to follow at all. But whoever's in the shirt, has-beens or never-will-bes, if the match is on I will be there, chalking up another ground and another story in a lifelong adventure.

Lol how many threads have we got on this?

2-0 to Bolton if we can cobble a team together.

Seems our off field standards have dropped all round.

Wouldn't have happened in my day!

Apprently, this will be the first time we've ever played each other.

I never knew that.

Technophobes take note: there will be no paper tickets for this, instead a QR code will be sent which can be scanned at the turnstile.

Imagine
Just imagine
Saturday tea time, a scabby 1-0 away win, Josh Maggenis having 50p headed a corner the opposite direction to the one he was aiming for, with a defence led by captain Wheater unmoving despite Wycombe having 45 shots in the last ten minutes.

And us all talking about football for a change.
