Various kids (including Luca Connell) extended into third year of scholar contracts.

This wouldn’t prevent a sale but should make the fee higher.

Did that action come from club management or the administrators I wonder?

The best news we have had in 2 years.
I note Brockbank isn’t one - is that because of his age? In any case, even if it means we get a better fee for Connell and he doesn’t play for us again it is a good thing. It also means we are making commercial decisions as well, which is obviously good news.

No they aren't. They are "in control". They don't "run it". There is a difference.

They run it. And are in control.

For as long as the company is in administration your administrator will run your business.

Not so much his age as his contract. He's on a pro deal, whereas Connell etc are Academy "scholars".

These are (some of?) the younger players on pro contracts that we were made aware of earlier in the thread.

Expiring 2019:
Jake Turner (pro, DOB 25/02/99, goalkeeper)
Harry Brockbank (pro, 26/09/98, centre-back)
Liam Edwards (pro, 02/10/96, centre-back)
Chiori Johnson (pro, 05/10/97, right-back/defender)
Joe Muscatt (pro, 15/12/97, left-back)
Jack Earing (pro, 21/01/99, central midfielder)
Marcus Wood (pro, 12/02/98, midfielder)
Joe Pritchard (pro, 10/09/96, midfielder)
Dennis Politic (pro, 05/03/00, winger)
Stephen Duke-McKenna (pro, 17/08/00, forward)

Expiring 2020:
Yoan Zouma (pro, 06/05/98, centre-back)
Connor Hall (pro, 18/02/98, striker)

Am delighted to hear that some of our second year scholars have signed on for their 3rd year
If we were due £300,000 max compensation for losing Luca Connell when he was a second year scholar,,, does anyone know his compensation fee as a third year ??

If I understand it correctly, it wouldn't be a compensation fee but a transfer fee. Might be semantic nit-picking but to answer your question more directly (if irksomely vaguely): more, and crucially it would be up to us whether or not to accept it.

Compensation for out-of-contract scholars reminds me of the pre-Bosman "tribunal" fees, like when we got done over for Tony Caldwell. I believe there's more structure for those who have gone through the Academy, and furthermore that fiscal structure is more rewarding depending on the quality of your academy, so as a second-tier academy we should be in a reasonably strong position. Which is not to say they'll be raining down £10m on us.

Still think the best and fairest way with these things is sell-on percentage clauses. Instead of "compensation" for training the lad from age 8 to 17, we (or whoever else) gets a percentage of fees from then onwards. It wouldn't be difficult to enshrine that in transfer fee protocol, even if only for players up to say their 25th birthday.

That list actually makes me feel ever so slightly optimistic. If we do have to fall back largely on existing youth already at the club, at least we have a good few that have stood out at U23 - that is assuming we can keep them all. Big assumption.

I love a bit of optimism, Branny, but I'd have to add another assumption: that they can make the step up. We've "heard of" a few of these lads because they've been around the first-team fringe, Checkatrade, subs bench etc - but the somewhat freakishly good Connell apart, none have really become first-teamers anywhere above Division Five (Dennis Politic at Salford) - Hall couldn't get regular football at Accy...

But! Who knows, out of this enforced adversity may come some solutions...

I tend to think that if a player is in his 20s and not established as a first team player he isn't ever going to be, at this club. Further down the pyramid, maybe.
Well, we are one step down so it's now or never for the 20 plusses.

Agree in the main (there's always going to be the odd few late developers - Vardy was playing non-league at 25?), but I'm not sure what people "expect" of the U23's. In the normal course of events, maybe one in any year, makes the step up, if really good crop, maybe two/three...so there's always going to be between eight and eleven on the books that are U23 regulars, for whom, that's as good as it's likely to get.

That said, if we're in a beggars can't be choosers, whether they're good enough might not count as highly as "do they have a pulse".

:D

Young players are usually fighting to make the break through into a full and competitive first team squad. In our current circumstances we're likely to give a few a bit of game time who otherwise wouldn't get near the match day squad.

In the early 80s Joyce, Thompson, Farnworth, Darby and Redfearn were chucked in through necessity and made careers in football. Rudge, Langley, Saunders fell by the wayside.

Injury gave Nicky Hunt and Danny Livesey a chance in our premier league days. One of whom did very well out of it. It's possible that all those players could have missed out on a professional career if we weren't skint at the time

Think my optimism actually comes from pessimism, in that I think the step up our youth are going to have to take is going to continue to get smaller...

Well, this took some work... can't find evidence of some contract lengths but as ever, corrections and clarifications are welcome.

JANUARY 2020

Liam Bridcutt (loan from Forest, where he's contracted to Jun 2020)
Will Buckley
Thibaud Verlinden (loan from Stoke, where he's contracted to Jun 2022)

JUNE 2020
Ben Alnwick
(Presumably) Remi Matthews
Josh Emmanuel
Jack Hobbs
Jake Wright (loan from Sheffield United, where he's contracted to Jun 2020)
Yoan Zouma (pro, 06/05/98, centre-back)
(Presumably) Liam Edwards (pro, 02/10/96, centre-back)
Joe Bunney
Jordan Boon (3rd year scholar, 26/11/00, left-back)
Jason Lowe
Luke Murphy
James Weir
Ali Crawford
Ronan Darcy (3rd year scholar, 4/11/00, att mid)
(Presumably) Dennis Politic (pro, 05/03/00, winger)
Chris O'Grady
Daryl Murphy
Connor Hall (pro, 18/02/98, striker)
Eddie Brown (3rd year scholar, 27/11/00, striker)

JUNE 2021

^ Well that looks a lot healthier financially than previous ones. It used to give me shivers seeing Ben Amos at the bottom of the list with several years of contract left.

Indeed. To me it looks just about right: some loans we might ask to extend, some very short-term contracts from those with things to prove, a big turnover next summer when we know what division we're in, and our best kids tied down to longer contracts. (I might like to see a couple more edge into that category, but as I've indicated I'm not quite sure how long some of them are tied down anyway.)
