Aye. Pace up top seems to be a glaringly obvious hole.

I know it's the honeymoon period, and it might bite my arse eventually, but I don't care: but I think I might be in love.

I read that this morning and thought... Hilly and Flitters - YES! I had begun to think that it might never feel good to be a Wanderer again. Today it feels good!

Going to be fascinating to see how it goes. Can already tell that perhaps on their own Flitcroft and Hill perhaps aren't the same. Together they seem to have a partnership that adds some magnetism we haven't seen for a while.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2019 9:45 amI know it's the honeymoon period, and it might bite my arse eventually, but I don't care: but I think I might be in love.

I'm cautious about any manager having to sign 9 free/loan players in a day and realistically what they can achieve. We will have to hit promotion form to have a chance and given we've signed 9 in a day most of whom haven't played much and all were unwanted it seems a very tall order to the point that right now I'll take Hill's advice and look at it game by game. First objective has to be try and get a win somewhere. Then go from there.
Hill and Flitcroft bring fresh enthusiasm and whilst I have some misgivings they certainly are positive and that is needed now. They need 18 months for me before anyone judges a thing. The likelihood is that this team they've built will struggle to click and patience will be needed.
But I think they get that and more.

Re: Onwards and Downwards: 2020 transfer speculation thread.
During last night's bout of insomnia I realised I wouldn't know some of the players we'd signed if they were sat next to me on a bus. Maybe I'm ignorant and everyone else on here knows them forensically but I thought I'd have a dig about - probably not all in one go - and see what I can find... my initial findings might be grossly misleading but at least they might help me when I'm at Rotherham going "which one's he?" like your granny watching a fast-moving film...
Let's start with the defenders and I'll see if I can do the others later.
JAKE WRIGHT (loan to Jan; parent club contract to Jun 2020)
Yorkshire-born left-sided centre-back: basically this season's Mark Beevers, albeit only 6ft 1in. Seems to have flourished late in his career. Keighley-born, he came through Bradford's ranks but settled at Halifax for two seasons and Crawley (then Conference) for one. Third-tier Brighton took him on but six months later he was shipped to Oxford, ending up making 286 appearances as they settled in the fourth tier; in his final term he captained them to promotion before switching to Sheffield United. And there he won another promotion, appearing 30 times and not being beaten once as they went up with us. He appeared another 17 times in the Championship but was eased out by other players. Can play left-back as well but centre-back's his position.
Blades fans love him: Twitter reactions to his departure included "Besta luck to the lad...was phenomenal for us", "superb defender", "A great signing. A leader too. Will make an excellent manager", "Good luck Jake will always remember the incredible performances you had absolutely rock solid", "Never, ever, ever put a foot wrong in a Blades shirt. Leader of the defence for 18 months in, what proved to be a huge upturn in our fortunes 18 months. Brought on the likes of Bash & JOC to be better players aswell", "Plays football the Sheffield Utd way, steel, passion, together and never say die. Always felt reassured with him in the back four." ---------------------------------------
JOSH EMMANUEL (free; one-year contract)
Joshua Oluwadurotimi Emmanuel: 5ft 11in right-back who has also played right midfield. Just turned 22, the Londoner came through West Am's ranks before switching to Ipswich. Loans followed to Crawley (aged 18, didn't do much), Rotherham (aged 20, helped them to third-tier promotion and won the club's Young Player of the Year award) and Shrewsbury (aged 21, summer-to-winter then recalled by Ipswich who didn't really use him). Nigerian heritage, Christian beliefs, and seems to be something of a unit: as a kid he was invited for trial by Saracens but he wanted to play football. His old club Rotherham were linked with him a few days before he joined us; the local press said as a loanee he "became a cult figure with his powerful surges forward".
---------------------------------------
JOE BUNNEY (free; one-year contract)
Gawky Gorton-born left-sider who turns 26 next month. Came up through non-league (Lancaster, Kendal, Stockport, Northwich) before Keith Hill signed him for League Two Rochdale in 2013. Played 144 times over five years, including bang on 100 in League One. Joined (tier-three) Northampton in Jan 2018 (18 games) but they went down and he was homesick; joined Blackpool on loan for the first half of 2018-19 (six games) then Rochdale for the second (16 games). Upon his return to Deepdale, Hill said this:
“Joe knows the way that we want to play the game and he knows that he has got a bright future in the game. He has got to grasp what I’ve been preaching to him since I first embarked on our journey together when we recruited him from Northwich Victoria as a striker who was then converted to a wing-back/ left-back/ attacking full-back. It was important/ is important that players leave the stable environment that they have been brought up in so that they can go and see if there is difference with how the real football world acts. I think he has learned some valuable lessons and it’s good to have him back because there is a real appetite there and a desire. The one thing Joe doesn’t want is to have been relegated with Northampton and then to get relegated with Rochdale. It’s a brave decision from Joe to come back, as it is for all the players who have come in. There’s a realisation of where we are but there has been no reluctance from these players to come and join us and embrace what it is where are trying to achieve.”

So in essence we've signed - Beevers, Mark Little and Henrik Pedersen?

Re: Onwards and Downwards: 2020 transfer speculation thread.
Sounds like a couple of wing backs there - 352 an option?
FWIW my Sheff u contact reckons the centre half is great in a 3 but is exposed for pace in a 2. Wheater and Beevers were hardly quick though so we know it can be done.

Think Hill likes attacking full backs and generally favours a 4-3-3. I struggle to see us playing 3 at the back with the players we signed but we shall see.officer_dibble wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2019 10:52 amSounds like a couple of wing backs there - 352 an option?

It's an interesting option if he trusts Brockbank.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2019 10:54 amThink Hill likes attacking full backs and generally favours a 4-3-3. All in opposition to what, having no club? What options exactly did Hill have, and what exactly are you expecting this season, UEFA Cup winning? We're climbing Everest, but at least we have some guides and a lot of hope.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2019 10:08 am

He had his uses. He only had pace, but we needed pace. Played half a season in a front 3 and finished on -1 goals.
