No Jackett Required - Portsmouth (A), 3:00pm, 28 September

Post by TonyDomingos » Thu Sep 26, 2019 9:30 pm

My first game of the season and looking forward to seeing a new look Wanderers full of free flowing, attacking football (if these pages are to be believed :D).

Pompey haven't got off to the best of starts, but I'll take a point.

If (and I acknowledge it's a huge if) we are to stay up, or even have a fighting chance of it, we can't just draw games.

44 games this season. There are some shit teams about so let's be lenient and say a point per game will be just about enough, hence 44pts. Even without further punishment for Brentford (and Donny) withdrawals, that's 53 points above where we are, with 36 games to play. 53 points from 36 games is almost exactly 1.5ppg - so we either start winning every other game,

Pompey, Accy, Tranmere - these are sides that have had a bad start and yet they're averaging at or near a point per game. Us doing the same won't reel them in.

Also: Pompey are indeed having a bad time of it. If we're even considering winning any games in this division, this is about as good a chance as it gets. When the kids were playing, anything - even a display of fight – was enough. When the new lads came in, they got forgiven for Rotherham (bedding in) and responded with two promising performances against pre-seasom favourites Sunderland and an Oxford side who've since scored 10 in two games, six away at Lincoln and four while humiliating West Ham. I'm not expecting us to always get a result against this division's better sides, so they're almost bonus points. What we do need, for maths and momentum, is to start beating the teams closest to us. We'll take results wherever we can get them but even last season when we were dogshit we did reasonably well in the bottom-six mini-league: W4 D4 L2. Even that's only 16 points from 10 games, ie 1.6ppg.

Wins gotta come from somewhere, and Fratton would do me. COYWM.

Oh, indeed. A win would certainly do me too. And I get that we need to pick up points against teams like Portsmouth if we're to stand any chance of staying up. But, it's the "proper" team's first away game since the last one, so, in terms of progress, I think a draw would be acceptable (though not desirable).

I'll do that grudgingly, but three are possible. If we'd started the season level it might be different but, as D.S.B says, it's survival and points mean prizes...(as the dear departed Bruce Forsythe would say) . So... COME ON YOU WHITES.... :oyea: :oyea:

I think when we get a recognised striker up front, that's when we can slash the odds of a win. And, based on displays so far, I reckon we could quite easily put a string of them together. Until then, I think every match is going to be a close run thing.

Just arrived on the south coast. Brought my lucky top hat that last saw us win on our travels at QPR.

No idea whether to expect another Rotherham tomorrow or carry on the good work of the last two home games.

I'll be optimistic and plump for a 2-1 win. Zouma with a late winner

Week after Christmas, 2006. We beat Pompey 3-2 and Nic Anelka, playing alongside Kev Davies, scored our third goal. Andy Cole scored a second for them with five minutes left to make it a bit twitchy. I remember this one well but looked it up because one of theirs had a pair of blue sparkly boots and I couldn't remember who it was (still can't) but our team back then makes me sigh with regret.

Sunny yet windy day on the south coast. Just finishing off a beer before a walk to the ground. The pubs full of folk in Liverpool shirts!

Some good play down the left by us. Zouma with some really good stuff but still some inexperience stuff that left Hobbs exposed. Free kick saved really well by Matthews after a deflection.

If Buckley could shoot he wouldn't be here. Some really decent chances. Interplay with Buckley, Verlinden, Emmanuelle and Murphy is really good.

Portsmouth have been dreadful though and we're still 0-0. Make of that what you will.

^ good summary dj. That save from Matthews was top drawer.

Chicksen impressing again. Bridcutt and Lowe have grown into the game. We can win this!
