Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
Don't think you could go with Buttler he's not in good form. Broad/ Anderson would possibly be fairly short term picks. So you're really only left with Stokes or Burns..
Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
If you take as a rule that the captain needs to be a player who is guaranteed a spot in the side, it really doesn’t leave you with many options. Realistically there’s only Burns, Root and Stokes who can be sure of a place for the next 12 months. Denly has maybe done enough considering the paucity of other options there.
Broad and Anderson aren’t going to play many more tests together, so neither of those are viable.
Buttler as a specialist captain / WK is an option. People seem to highly rate his tactical acumen, but we have to accept he’s never going to be a prolific scorer and as a WK/batsman alone isn’t a guaranteed pick especially if Foakes finds some form again.
Burns and Denly are the only ones with captaincy pedigree in first class cricket.
I fear the lack of alternatives mean we’re stuck with Root, which is a shame as it’s currently ruining a potentially great batsman and he’s not very good at it.

If Buttler is your wicket keeper and number 7 he could captain. His form as an out and out batter isn’t good enough but wicket keeper all rounder it’s ok.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 4:39 pmDon't think you could go with Buttler he's not in good form. It needs taking off Root. It might ruin Stokes. It may be a short term thing anyway.

I see your point, just wouldn't be rushing to make Buttler captain myself. I'd be surprised if they were to change mid tour. That's feels pretty unlikely, short of him being caught buggering a sheep on a team night out.

Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
Once AGAIN we need an extra man in slip. Stokes getting stick for dropping catches he has to to go full length for is ridiculous.

All in, a good days effort from the chaps, there. Agree Brucie that on occasion we need different fields.

du Plessis is an appalling captain.

Agreed. Taking De Kock on 20 is huge. Delighted for Sam Curran too.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2020 3:56 pmAll in, a good days effort from the chaps, there. Agree Brucie that on occasion we need different fields.

Jimmy should get to the 600 milestone. Truly remarkable player.
Bowlers bailing us out again, good job SA aren’t much better at batting than we are. 3rd innings decides this one.

Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
So, what do we need to set them? 350? 400? Personally, my worry is that De Kock has the capability to turn the whole thing on its head!

Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
It still doesn't look like a wicket full of demons, even though you have to bat sensibly on it. I wouldn't want less than 350, even if we might not need that many. We're probably going to want at least 4 sessions but wouldn't be surprised if we tried to set a target for an hour before tea, if we last that long.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2020 5:24 pmSo, what do we need to set them? 350? 400? Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
Perfect day today for England. Polished them off quickly and then batted sensibly to build a commanding lead. Hopefully we accumulate quickly tomorrow - good in a way that Bess was dismissed at the end as Stokes, Pope and Buttler can hopefully just get on with it in the morning.
Agree with Worthy, I’d want at least 4 sessions, so give them half an hr before tea. Their batting bar Elgar, FdP and de Kock is flaky.

Aggers view is +100 and don't bat past lunch...not sure his maths stacks up against the run rate or the Saffers over rate. Of course Stokes, Buttler and Pope can do quick damage, but usually with the ball coming on.

Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
In these positions I always hear Boycott's words - "you can chase 300 plus batting last but there is a reason not many ever do". Way England have started - I'd say get em in just after lunch - need time on this pitch as without genuine pace in our attack we're unlikely to blow them away and will need to work for wickets. However, I'd say Broad and Anderson might be ideal bowlers for this wicket.
Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
In the blink of an eye stokes takes the lead past 300 with 90 mins still until lunch. I think a declaration midway through the afternoon is on the cards.

England's much vaunted middle order finally has a chance to shine in its ideal scenario - as for once the top order actually performed as they should (mainly Sibley).
Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
Also Denly. Chewed up a lot of balls and blunted the attack a bit. He’s doing a useful job at the moment. In most other eras he’d be under pressure but for now he’s ok.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 9:18 amEngland's much vaunted middle order finally has a chance to shine in its ideal scenario - as for once the top order actually performed as they should (mainly Sibley).

Hmmm.....not convinced by any stretch. BBC commentator the other day said "a mate texted to say Denly will be out for 31...." it's all a bit predictable.jimbo wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 9:26 amAlso Denly. But yeah - he's not going to be dropped in current circumstances. I'd be interested to see how Crawley develops - could he be the next number 3 with a bit of experience?
