I'm thinking we might need a "COVID spike" in Southampton by the end of the day...
They've a good bowling attack and I rather feel batting is more difficult on return than bowling. But still, how many chances are we giving Denly to show he's simply not good enough. I mean even for a young kid you'd have a long time ago asked them to go and work on their technique by now, but at his age - its just hopeless.

87-5 now. Batting lineup on paper looked weak and that is how it transpires. Still don't think they've been helped by the bizarre decision to bat first.....but there we are.

Couldn't agree more. Ridiculous decision. It might get better for batting in vs it's perfect for bowling in. HTF do we win the toss and come out of that one batting? :conf:

^^ When the wicket cracks on day 2 and Dom Bess spins them out for 36 in the 4th innings, you'll look back and give your head a shake! :D

Mate, I correctly forecast the weather more often than the Met Office, simply by calling their opposite. I reckon that if I start putting money on it I'll have enough to head down under for next year's Ashes. :D

PS. It is Day Two :D

Lol. I can see it cracking already...by tea, you won't recognise this track...(probably as they approach 100-1 on it) :-)

Ashes down under feel like a world of pain waiting to happen...

The thing is yesterday it rained more than was forecast. Otherwise we might have been 50-5 yesterday.

I get the idea about the pitch being hard and cracking but given both sides are predominantly built on pace attacks and not sure Bess will bowl a side out anyway it didn’t make much sense to me yesterday. You also don’t really know what a good score is when nobody has batted for close to half a year.

I was being flippant about the pitch taking 90 degree spin. :-) But conditions like these, hopefully don't change much between us batting and them batting. 220 might not be a bad score (I know we're a way off that yet), on here...

Three successful LBW appeals by them. What do these umpires do for a day job?

Well, at 204 we're left to consider the maxim that we don't actually know if that's truly a shit tally until they've batted too. I suspect it might well be though.

If we keep bowling on the pads or down the leg side then 204 is going to look tiny. Lacking line and length here compared to the Windies.

Guessing like the players they can get out of nick after a long time off. They can’t even head to the nets in the build up. Must take a bit of time to get their eye in for judging LBWs at that pace.

Windies batting on a sunny day, pitch dried out so not two paced anymore....bonkers decision Stokesy lad....bonkers.

And Broad can do one, trying to pretend you never change your mind on the toss. When you see a tacky pitch, grey skies and rain in the forecast for a couple of days - you absolutely take that into account. Especially when it is followed by sun. Sure you can't entirely go on a weather forecast - but still that call was bonkers and I said so at the time.

I'm not sure they can play the 'ring rusty' card anymore, Jimbo. They've been, and continue to be, simply atrocious.

It does somewhat raise the question for me, that for LBW in Test Matches and the complexity of what is being judged in an LBW appeal, whether the default position should be that off-field umpire automatically reviews and gives the decision...

Meh - I wouldn't totally object but it means every appeal you've got to look front foot, ultra edge, ball tracking. In some scenarios....could take a while.

But lets not forget at least in cricket there is a defined system whereby the 'right' decision more often than not is reached - and on field judgement of teams and umpires is relevant. In football you have video technology that by its own admission is still getting the decisions wrong - 3 out of 3 wrong yesterday - by their own admission. Cricket is far better.

If there's one thing the third umpire could check all of without slowing things down its fecking no balls.
