I do like our attempts to play football but occasionally instead of trying to walk it in, I do wish someone would occasionally have a bang.

Agreed. Sick of us passing the ball to death around the box. The one time we went for it tonight, Dapo hit the post and Doyler bagged the rebound. Who knew?
There's been lots of discussion on here about the character of the squad in terms of guts and leadership, some of which have been unfair I think. However there does seem to be something lacking, and it think it's that we are too meek as a team. Morecambe appear to have torn right into Grimsby tonight and put it beyond doubt. We just don't do that. There's an admirable pluckiness about our defending and workrate, but we should be so much more looking at the players.

Really important 3 points tonight, a draw would've been a massive setback given other results. Well done to them for grinding it out.

I'm not sure about John, but Evatt has just said that Gilks is fine.
Good news. John is such a big miss for me though. Easily our most accomplished player. Only one who can cross it. Don’t rate Brockbank at all.

Also Elbo - can we just stop bringing him on?

I’d play the Parky 4-4-2 diamond on Saturday, Doyle and Miller split forwards and just knock it down the channels. Surprise them with something different.
That's a bit too Dougie for my liking. Maybe try it last half hour if we're struggling. That would be asking for a tonking IMO. We need to avoid losing, and we have been tough to beat using this shape.

If John is out we need to play Jackson not Brockbank, and I think if he plays Sarce from the start he'll drop Thomason to the bench but I'd be surprised if Sarce starts the game after being out for a while & he needs to have Jensen on the bench.

The team will somehow have to play like they did 1st half for the 90 mins on Saturday - we need a proper 'big' performance from the team

Agreed. Jackson is left footed for a start - having two right footers on the left should be avoided.

If Sarce starts suspend it’s for Thomo but he was still full of running tonight, Lee was pretty average.

I’d be giving them a rest now.

LE our players do put the effort in but they are just bullied too easily, there are not enough leaders, fighters, scrappers etc. We need big games from Lee & Williams on Saturday who have been a bit off for me these last few games.

Or like Fleetwood. I honestly think that we need to freshen things up and try something different.

Seems a big risk. Worries me that they'd revert to earlier season confusion.

3 points! I am happy for them, but we really had to work hard for it. Baptitse was MoM for me. Superb defending. Second half was difficult. Looked like we got tired, but in addition for me, we lacked the strength to compete in the middle of the field. Thomasson, Williams and Lee were overrun for the last 30 mins. I wondered why Tutte wasn't brought on for Williams who was really struggling. I guess his height was a factor why he stayed on but he looked very tired. They looked so much stronger than we were physically.

The players deserve a day off and rest. A big test up next and we have some fitness issues to deal with. Brocky looked lost when he came on so if John cant make it, then it has to be the natural left back Jackson for me. Hope Sarce makes it too. We will need his running strength in midfield even for 30 mins next game.

What happened to John? Didn't see anything overly obvious as to why he's had to come off.
They were pressing high, and they appear to think "pressing" means "hacking at legs".
If it’s a hammy wasn’t down to impact. Prefer it to be an impact injury as there is a chance he will recover this season. Hamstring that will be it.
Evatt: “He’s got a bang on his knee. We don’t know what it is yet. He doesn't really know whether it’s a twist or a kick. We’re hopeful it’s just a kick, but Harry came on and stood up and was great.”

And on Gilks: “He’s fine. He just milks it a bit now and then but we gave him a cuddle and he’s fine now.”

Agree with this. Baps was immense. When I'm watching this team, I don't see a lack of desire - plenty of occasions Isgrove, Dapo and even Doyle are back defending both from set-piece and in open play and the next moment they're chasing the clearance down, up front.

I do, to Bertie and Insano's posts see a lack of natural leaders and characters that will get in the opposition's face. But I don't think at this juncture we're going to change the way MJ, Lee, Thommo are, to enable that to be on display with three games to left (I'm doubtful whether we'd get that from them in the longer term too, they don't seem like that sort of player).

We aren't going to change the knock it about to progress up the field approach (IMO) this side of summer either and I'm doubtful that we'll try and change that in the summer, rather I think we'll try and find someone who can convert all those balls that flash across the face with no one quite able to get there. That's how they've been instructed to do it. It's frustrating when we only get one goal per game, but as Evatt says, it's not like we're not creating gilt edged chances from it. I sit there shouting "shoot" usually two or three times, before the cross goes aimlessly across the box, with no-one quite on the end of it.

As much as it was backs against the wall, in the second half. Carlisle registered one shot on target. If we'd managed one shot on target (we only recorded two last night), we would be told how shit we are, so here's some quotes from Carlisle's forum - I miss TWSpy...

"If you going to lose a game thats the way. When we played football we did well."

"Bolton much the better side and I think we only got a foothold in the game once they sat back and protected their lead."

"Time to experiment because let's face it what he is doing ain't working . You need to score to win games and for some reason he seems incapable of getting his teams to take advantage when on top."

"They keep saying decent team, just needs tweaking here and there - perhaps but still very unsure about the manager and his tactical naivety."

"Poor tactics has cost us this season. When we keep it on the ground we’ve got as good a players as most. Beech’s persistence with hoofing the ball forward is so easy to defend against. And the long throws have become ridiculous. Time to get somebody in with some idea."

"You can blame whatever but it’s another season of nothingness in tier 4."

"We were shocking for the first hour, all over the place in midfield and standing too far off Bolton and making them look like Brazil."

"Tonight showed how far we are behind a team that plays proper football. They were streets ahead of us in terms of skills. There skillful players were going passed us for fun."

"Thought they were really nervous when we got at them, but just no goalscorer or flair players. One big plus point, we work so so hard as a team."

"Bolton do have some exceptional players for this level though. Way ahead of any others in League 2."

"other priority is a free kick specialist along the lines of Grainger or Devitt. The shots on goal from free kicks this season have been dreadful and have arguably cost us a playoff place"

"Incidentally I thought we looked pretty strong in terms of our fitness tonight." "But Phillips and Lummy repeatedly commented that they looked knackered"

"Our lot obviously didn't watch the Grimsby-Bolton game and learn from it, or maybe they did and we simply are not good enough as to be fair we couldn't beat Grimsby either."

Funny old game innit? Were they watching the same game as our posters?

^ I'd have said their opinions of us match the pretty broad opinions we had on here.

Played some good stuff in the 1st half.

Some of our players are too good for this level.

We did look nervy when they got at us.

Radio Cumbria were very complimentary of us in the 1st half too but repeatedly said the game was over if we got a 2nd. We've got to turn the impressive approach play into chances and then into goals. Something to work on next year in L1 hopefully.

I don't think we had too many sombrero's on in the first half - I mean Brazil! I'm sure we had a few folks telling us they were the better team first half... :-)

I didn't listen to Radio Cumbria, as I could easily find the widget to change to home commentary :-)

Fascinating stuff Worthy, thanks. I've said before that fans don't change much from team to team, and many of them have a low opinion of their team: "We'll never score" but "they look like they might at any minute". (Plus, complaints are always in a louder voice.)

The simple test I try to do during the game is imagine the teams swapped shirts, or I supported the other team. Would I be as worried/confident? There have been games recently where we've dominated possession and created chances, and the loudest reaction is "Well if we don't score soon the world will implode." How might the oppo feel?

Some of our lot managed neither "yes we've scored" nor "great we have three points"...

I can only assume their internet broke on 28 minutes and at the end, temporarily. I'd give up watching if it ever got that bad.
