My grandad was a coal miner there. When both Bickershaw and Parsonage Collieries were open the whole town used to be covered in a layer coal dust. The pits closed in 1992 yet nearly 30 years on the entire place still looks like someone needs to set about it with a power hose.Gooner Girl wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 7:42 pmNo, don’t hold back Bruce, say what you really think!!Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 7:34 pmIt's a fleapit of a place on the way into Wigan.Gooner Girl wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 7:19 pmWhere’s Leigh exactly? In fairness, the town hosts a very flat 10k. Still running round a dump, but it's a flat dump!Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 10:41 amMy grandad was a coal miner there. You didn't do Pennington Flash Parkrun with us that time did you, BP? A lovely prospect - the possibility of running around the flash itself and alongside the canal. Oh no, not a bit of it. 5K running round ankle-threatening slag heaps. Even when the place has the opportunity to show a better side it doesn't recognise it. No wonder Andy Burnham's their MP.Burnden Paddock wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 1:18 pmIn fairness, the town hosts a very flat 10k. A few years ago a friend of mine was coming back from a significant hip injury (dislocated and split the ball socket, fracture fans) after a fall and was getting back into doing parkruns. We were coincidentally both back up north on the same weekend away London, so as per we got to arranging a parkrun to do while we were up as part of his rehab.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 3:05 pmYou didn't do Pennington Flash Parkrun with us that time did you, BP? He said he fancied doing Bolton and immediately my teeth began to grate; all I could see was my mate, struggling up Cruella with his bad hip, and then tripping and falling back down that jagged hill all the way and ending up back in hospital. Absolutely not, I couldn't let him even remotely risk it. How about Pennington Flash instead, I said? Surely that would be a lovely one to run and a new course, to boot, any excuse to avoid the death trap that surely was Leverhulme Park.
...I'm just glad he made it around in one piece!

Not selling a trip up north to me lads!
Umpired my first proper cricket match today. Well,
20/20. I wouldn’t have wanted to face some of the U11 lads we have bowling! . Smashed them anyway and the nice guy umpiring for the other team who was apparently some hockey international helped me through the score sheet. Quite enjoyed it actually, despite the drizzle. Still not a patch on rounders though.

Had my second swim of the year in Pennington Flash on Saturday. They operate out of Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club. It was.......fresh.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 3:05 pmYou didn't do Pennington Flash Parkrun with us that time did you, BP? As I swam I was obviously disturbing the surface water insects and Swifts and Martins were swooping down to catch them as they rose. Fantastic sight.
Didn't see any pike. And, after my experience of touching a sturgeon as I swam in the Danube in Dubrovnik......, It wouldn't have bothered me anyway.

Physio finally started! Many thanks for the offer GtE but found out I could get it through work via health insurance.
Seem to think it's hamstring tendonitis which isn't good, neither was the given recovery time. We will see how things progress but looking likelier than not that London will be deferred to next year. Feck.
In the mean time Leyton baths won't know what's hit it.

You do know there is public swimming at the Olympic Pool? Much nicer than Leyton.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Doesn't look like parkrun will be back as planned on June 5th. 2/3 landowners still not given permission, including Bolton Council. They won't risk opening less than half the parkruns as they'll be swamped.

Re: The athletics/running thread
That’s a shame, not that I was planning on running one any time soon. Struggled round 2.5 miles yesterday painfully slow! So unfit at the moment. Have sacked the first vets league off. Anyone else struggling with fitness/motivation?
Re: The athletics/running thread
I was but have been getting out more regularly and am.now keen to start training properly again. Only one race pencilled in, the rearranged Beverley 10k in September.Gooner Girl wrote: ↑Sat May 15, 2021 8:45 amThat’s a shame, not that I was planning on running one any time soon. Keep plugging away, it'll be easier when the motivation returns.

If it returns! It’s ok for you, You can have two months off and still return super fast! The rest of us mere mortals chug along at snail pace after a couple of weeks off! In fact I’m not sure I’ve got out of snail pace for several years now. Perhaps I need to have another baby, had my finest season in about 20 years about a year after having Luke!
