Chuffed that we've signed him but let's remember he's a full back. Time to get giddy when we've signed a striker or creative midfielder..

I assume you just watched Spinazzola destroy Turkey. He's also a left back. We already signed a creative mid in Sheehan.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 10:05 pmChuffed that we've signed him but let's remember he's a full back. Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Thread.
We need a striker and another winger or attacking type mid sure. But full backs are critical in modern football. It’s been a great summer so far. We can field the team that finished last season (when have we been able to do that in years?) and have strengthened already with a couple.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 10:05 pmChuffed that we've signed him but let's remember he's a full back. Missed it pal. I like John and I'm chuffed we've got him but the best sides aren't built around full backs. A couple more additions in the goal scoring areas and I'll be confident we can have a decent crack at L1.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 10:11 pmI assume you just watched Spinazzola destroy Turkey. No arguments there. We need at least 2-3 top attackers for this level. I'd expect we've barely started.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 10:53 pmMissed it pal. Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Thread.
Full backs are far more important than they used to be and I'm glad he's signed but you'd swap John and Doyle for a left back as good as Doyle and a striker as good as John, without a moment's thought.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Thread.
Yes, if you can have either a world class striker or a world class left back it's striker all the way.
However, if you are in the market for world class strikers and at the same time you sign a worldy at left back, you party.
John is a flawed player, but in our system and in the lower leagues he's as close to a worldy as we will get right now. Same goes for Sheehan in midfield. In the wrong systems both are liabilities, but they can be the best version of themselves for us.
Unpopular (possibly insane) opinion. Carry on with signings like these and we can win the league.

^^ I'm just delighted as an official ex-pub league LB that we're now held in such high esteem. Those scything tackles to down that "nippy little bugger" on the wing were always underrated, as was the clearance that landed three pitches away taking said winger with it! Like John, also managed "intended" goals direct from corners and on one occasion from about 10 yards ahead of our own 18 yard line. Thank you for your faith in LB's. I'm now attributing much more value to my contribution!

Yeah but we are talking about the benefit of full backs who can run fast here…..Worthy4England wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 9:15 am^^ I'm just delighted as an official ex-pub league LB that we're now held in such high esteem. Played wing at Rugby, but everyone knows that FB's shouldn't be in that other half of the pitch unless taking a throw or a corner!BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 10:20 amYeah but we are talking about the benefit of full backs who can run fast here…..Worthy4England wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 9:15 am^^ I'm just delighted as an official ex-pub league LB that we're now held in such high esteem. I've just seen Adam Chicksen, playing at LB, score for Notts County in the National League play off semi.

And Dean Moxey (LB) has scored a pen for Torquay in extra time that will probably be the winner.TonyDomingos wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 1:29 pmI've just seen Adam Chicksen, playing at LB, score for Notts County in the National League play off semi.

We need quality all over the pitch, no matter what position, to make everything work. Brilliant signing John. Probably our best player so far.

Agreed, but we will now live and die by the forwards we get in.irie Cee Bee wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 2:45 pmWe need quality all over the pitch, no matter what position
Evatt is building a proper squad here. Players who really suit his style of play. He's well short in forward areas, though.
I just hope people don't get annoyed when we get players in for other positions they don't see as a priority, because we also lack depth despite our numbers. We need 3 more defenders, another 'keeper and arguably another midfielder if we can shift dead wood - and that's just for the first team. Add in 3 forward players and then young "one for the future" lads and he has his work cut out for him.

As it happens, Ghost, I was looking to update and upload this - a personal opinion.
. .
That's a whole lotta white up the business end. Even in unwanted players, we're better stocked at the back - yet we still only have one keeper. Much to do yet, but it's only mid-June.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Thread.
I'd probably have to write an essay on why I feel the way I do about different bits of the squad, DSB, and it'd bore everyone to tears.
What I'll say is that I think Evatt will get another specialist right back in if he can. I think he sees Brocky as a utility player who will almost always make his bench (and thus as an important part of his squad), but I don't think he'll be satisfied with him as direct competition to Jones.
I could see him maybe giving Gordon a chance, but I suspect not.
Again on Crawford - if we can't swing another mid he may get a chance, but doubt it.
Delf I think will at best be a utility attacker and I think Evatt may be fairly ruthless and try to improve on him.
In simple terms the biggest issues we have in the 11 now are the out balls we will need in League One. Someone with genuine pace over the top and a lad we can play into. We used Izzy as the over the top option last year to some success, but even in League Two he wasn't fast enough. The balance is also off on the right, with neither Jones nor Isgrove comfortable in the channel. That meant Sarce was left always making the same run and we were too predictable. I suspect Evatt will look to fix that and it's another reason I suspect we will see a different type of right back come in as an option.
You'd expect we will have to rely on loans for a lot of this and also have to wait until Jan to fix other bits, but we can't go into the season without improving the forward line dramatically. I'd say Isgrove and Doyle are the ones most likely to find themselves "improving the bench" over the season, but we'll see.

It's a long summer and a receptive audience.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 4:46 pmI'd probably have to write an essay on why I feel the way I do about different bits of the squad, DSB, and it'd bore everyone to tears.
Agreed. I prevaricate between pencilling him in as RB and RCB, when in fact his intended position is probably SB - subs' bench...GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 4:46 pmWhat I'll say is that I think Evatt will get another specialist right back in if he can. It's a pity for Liam Gordon that this very summer he clicks from underage to overage, by the EFL's rules. I think Evatt would like to polish that rough diamond but as we rise through the EFL we maybe getting further away from the lad's true home.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 4:46 pmI could see him maybe giving Gordon a chance, but I suspect not.
Every manager who lasts long enough has to get rid of players he's signed, and it's not always popular - see Fergie with Hughes/Ince/Kanchelskis. I don't think there'd be many protests outside the ground if Crawford and Delf were shunted, but it's still a test of a manager's mettle. You may well be right that he might not shy away from it.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 4:46 pmAgain on Crawford - if we can't swing another mid he may get a chance, but doubt it.

Speaking of a different type of right-back, is there a case for Kioso coming back? His departure was just before (and arguably expedited) the abandonment of the back three, so he might not be quite the "out ball" he was - unless Evatt shares BWFCi's notion that PK could be a right-sided attacker...GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 4:46 pmIn simple terms the biggest issues we have in the 11 now are the out balls we will need in League One. Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Thread.
Given what just happened this all seems a bit shallow now, but I'd rather talk about this than think about that. Thankfully Erikson is reportedly stable.
I think Kioso is worth having back. He was good in a flat back four for Northampton. He's physical and comfortable underlapping and overlapping. Given that Evatt knows him and he has some training in our style, he'd be a yes. He probably could play as a forward, but I don't think he'd be good enough there for us to go up.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Thread.
Interesting to see Evatt's comments to the BN mirror what most of us have assumed.
He needs 5 more at a minimum. Keeper, centre half, left back, wide player and striker. In the market for another right back and another forward option if there are suitable options. Forwards being the biggest issue.
It's as expected, but reassuring to me to constantly here things from Evatt that say he sees things the same way I do. I was getting a bit tired of feeling like I was watching a different team than our managers were.
