Awesome performance in the mixed triathlon. GB still smashing it in the pool and more athletics this weekend. Finest moment so far has been the BMX. Never thought I'd ever be saying that!

Re: The Olympics
Anybody else got mixed feelings about Dina Asher Smith failing in the 100 metres and then pulling out of the 200 as well because she was a big hope of a medal but as she’d insisted that, despite warnings from the IOC not to, at the medal ceremony she’d be taking the knee on the podium? Maybe that actually confirms the mental health problems she’s claiming to suffer from and perhaps s if she just concentrated on her running rather than political issues she wouldn’t have problems in the first place?

Re: The Olympics
I thought Asher Smith had a hamstring problem? I'm not aware of any mental health issues but as great an athlete as she is, and seemingly a lovely person too, it was still a big ask to win gold in the field she's in. Her not winning certainly had nowt to do with whether she'd have taken a knee on the podium or not.Whitesince63 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:29 amAnybody else got mixed feelings about Dina Asher Smith failing in the 100 metres and then pulling out of the 200 as well because she was a big hope of a medal but as she’d insisted that, despite warnings from the IOC not to, at the medal ceremony she’d be taking the knee on the podium? Re: The Olympics
Huge Golf fan anyway, but I'm sure the tension of this play-off will have had plenty of casual observers on the edges of their seats.
There are, of course, only three medal places available, which has seen us have a seven-man play-off (including Casey and McElroy) for bronze. They needed an additional four holes to split the field and for Chengtsung Pan to 'win it'.

Yeah if she just ignored racism and stopped protesting against it she might not have torn her hamstring. What a prize helmet you sound like.Whitesince63 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:29 amAnybody else got mixed feelings about Dina Asher Smith failing in the 100 metres and then pulling out of the 200 as well because she was a big hope of a medal but as she’d insisted that, despite warnings from the IOC not to, at the medal ceremony she’d be taking the knee on the podium? Just on the taking of the knee, I found the crowds response yesterday heartening. Loud applause easily drowning out the 3 or 4 plebs that booed.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 9:58 amYeah if she just ignored racism and stopped protesting against it she might not have torn her hamstring. Re: The Olympics
Quite a few booed tbh. But thankfully they are the minority. It’s concerning that in 2021 people are so emboldened as to be able to openly boo anti racist gestures. But we are where we are.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 10:42 amJust on the taking of the knee, I found the crowds response yesterday heartening. Re: The Olympics
Regarding her injury, and I've absolutely no doubt that she'll have received the best medical attention and available advice, but who decides, and at what point, that we send Dina Asher-Smith with a six-week-old? hamstring tear rather than replace her in Team GB?
fecking difficult decision either way, of course.

I remember the Brownlow brothers getting gold and silver ( Has Alaistair retired now? ) and this, like that, was riveting T.V. (Not sure I'd watch Triathalon if we weren't in it) A superb effort by all four. Magic. Same with the B.M.X. (fair weather casual on this, me )but well done the Brit bikers) fantastic performance. .
I'm thinking they should have a fourth medal place (Copper, Brass?), as being fourth in any Olympic final must be heart-breaking for the young athletes, or a "Taking Part" medal for the lot of them. They all deserve it. Some watching to catch up on yet...
Touchy subject, but I'm a bit baffled by this mental health issues thing in sport? Surely the time to declare it is before the games, not after all the training and expense of getting to the Olympics and withdrawing at the last minute? Same with fitness, it seems strange. Just an opinion.

Re: The Olympics
Mental health wise, despite that strange rant earlier, we're only talking about Biles in terms of a once every four years Olympics (the likes of Osaka and Ben Stokes have been taking a break from sports that never really stop and don't have that scarcity).
And Simone Biles competes in a sport where, if you get one of the big ones wrong you genuinely could end up in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. Gymnastic experts (I'm not one ) seemed to be able to tell from the last time she competed that she wasn't ok and she nearly f*cked up what could have been a really bad one.
All top level sport demands a level of mental toughness. I think a couple of steps forward we are making are a) divorcing the idea of not having that as somehow a moral falling or making them a "weak" human and b) recognising that it isn't a permanent state, sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. Simone Biles already has 5 Olympic golds, the idea she doesn't have mental strength or can't handle pressure is clearly nonsense.
On the injury side I thought the same thing when Murray pulled out. But having thought about it I think that, if you hit the qualifying criteria it's your spot, and while you should pull out if you're never going to make it, I think as long as you have a realistic shot, especially in sports where the Olympics is the once in every four years peak of the sport I can see why you'd try. DAS still ran 11 seconds and was something like 2 hundredths off making the final. She wasn't far off.

Re: The Olympics
No-one said it was. Obviously they don't rock up every four years and think how do I do this again. But much like athletics it's a once every four years peak. It's not like tennis or golf where it's a nice addition you might try to go along and win but not the big thing.

Yeah I get what you mean. It’s just they compete on a circuit annually have the world championships, Europeans etc they compete in loads of things. It’s just we aren’t watching.Prufrock wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 11:40 amNo-one said it was. Obviously they don't rock up every four years and think how do I do this again. And you could say peak of cricket is Ashes or WC or whatever it’s not like Stokes really cares about the hundred. And it’s a team sport.
I get the pressure on the olympics for some sports angle. Mental health is complex though and may transfer to performance but not be linked directly to it. Who knows?

Re: The Olympics
I’ve suffered from poor mental health historically and the thing is you can’t say ‘hey I’m not right’ in advance it doesn’t work like that. It sneaks up on you and bam. You can’t get out of bed or walk straight or it feels like that. Especially with something like anxiety - you just don’t know day to day and frankly I would bet lots of these athletes work off anxiety for peak performance and it’s an incredibly fine balance.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 10:59 amThis..^Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 8:31 amAwesome performance in the mixed triathlon. Re: The Olympics
He's saying he got cramp in his calf so he "Just moved". I thought it was only me who jumps out of bed by that distance on getting calf cramp.
I'm sorry but I'm struggling to believe him.
As Denise Lewis just said, he should've stuck his hand up - he didn't.
I'm more inclined to agree with Michael Johnson that he tried to count the time rather than wait for the gun.
He was a way out of the blocks anyway.
