Of my regular running partners, one is currently unwell (see above). The other was at Plymouth last night, probably wishing he was running in a not quite as soggy Bolton. None of us has set the world alight with our distances this year. As for chatting, that goes out the window after a few mins! I’m going to try to force myself out one night this week for a short one and build from there. Well done on your run and rather impressive step count btw.

Got the Covid all clear and now I have to go and pick up some antibiotics. Once I get all this shit off my chest I can think about starting again. I'm even thinking about revisiting C25K from about week 4, something like that just to build back up.

Good idea. I always find it depressing how fitness goes so quickly after just a few weeks off. Well mine does!Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 11:32 amGot the Covid all clear and now I have to go and pick up some antibiotics. Pilates this morning, umpiring hockey at work this arvo and a splash about in the pool with the kids this evening where no real swimming will be done as I’ll be too knackered.

Nearly five half marathons a week! Made my debut for the club at the Met League cross country in Woodford at the weekend. Great to be back, but the hamstring is still a long way off. Felt like i was running on one leg at points. I'm sure it will get better over time but after the best part of 10 months on/off injured i'm a bit bored of it now.
In the women's race on Sunday was a GB Athlete who competed in the Tokyo olympics. She came third. Not bad standard then
In other news, got the email through for my place in next year's London Marathon (subject to payment) so yeeah? Goal to aim for!
Exciting stuff re the marathon! Is it back in April? Serious training to start in the new year? Good stuff re the XC! Especially whilst still half injured!
Thanks! No it's in October again next year before reverting to April in 2023, so still a long way to go. Plan is to get into some kind of shape this winter, leg depending. I've got a marathon in April in either Wales or Brighton (both pre-pandemic, both postponed until the same day. Boo etc) which I'll use as a test run, rest up and then prepare for London proper over the summer.
Thanks! I was down on myself that day which I think is frustration at how it went (a couple of necessary stops to placate the hamstring), however really needed to get over my self at bit. Since then I've been able to look back at how lovely it was to run with lots a people and some lovely folk with the new club.
And all again tonight! 5k around the Olympic Park as part of the Chingford League. Did 23.19 at a time trial a few weeks ago which involved getting lost once, so I'd hope to dip under that today all being well. I did chose to cycle into work today though for some reason

Re: The athletics/running thread
A deliberately short and slow return after 5 weeks off. Not injured, just lazy as feck. 3k with splits of 6:01/6:02/5:59. Have to be pleased with the consistency if nowt else. Onwards and upwards! No doubt I’ll see you all back in here in another 5 weeks.
Re: The athletics/running thread
Get the regular Parkrun Sausage Society going again and find a group midweek, maybe then you'll be more motivated to run alone then.
Enter a race as a target maybe.
feck knows what else!

Definitely true. Shocking how quickly I tail off now. It's my legs not my lungs. Muscular rather than aerobic. Horrendous.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 2:01 pmA situation which exacerbates with age, I findGooner Girl wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 11:38 amI always find it depressing how fitness goes so quickly after just a few weeks off. Going to have to start going to the gym I think.

Re: The athletics/running thread
22.36 for the 5k race this evening. Or 21.58 if you believe strava (which I do, in this case, until it starts telling me things I don't like)
Really happy, things are going in the right direction. Was hitting 4:teens quite comfortably until the lack of cardio kicked in, then the hamstring/tendons were unhappy the last k. Still held 4.20s pace average which I've not been able to do in a long time. Which is great, because I know there is a lot more to come. Not bad after 20k on the bike earlier in the day either
Key now is getting back into the long slow Sunday runs and build that base, leg allowing. Outside of the hamstring/tendons getting stronger, that extra capacity is the next big hurdle.

Sounds like you're on the right track, hope the hamstring behaves.

I’ll take your word for it! I saw a lovely video on fb yesterday of some elderly ladies from America who had formed a basketball team and we’re having a great time playing and socialising. Perhaps I shall get back into a team sport when I’m in my 80’s, walking football or something!Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 2:01 pmA situation which exacerbates with age, I findGooner Girl wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 11:38 amI always find it depressing how fitness goes so quickly after just a few weeks off. Well Done on the 5k time last night, cracking stuff. You must be really pleased with that. Sounds like you’ve got the marathon planned out. I did the 10k on Brighton marathon weekend a few years back. Nice atmosphere and a fairly flat course. My friends done the full one and said it was a good course.

Get them walking the dog, be reet!
Thank you, yes I'm extremely happy. Even managed an ill-advised easy 10k tonight with few repercussions. It's just good to feel I'm heading to a good place again after basically 10 months in limbo. Still a long way to go, but to be able to run that time felt like an impossible ask even a month or two ago.
Now to rest up, do some boring but necessary gym work, and push on. Looking forward to the future again. I've heard good things about Brighton, I'll have to see what my friends want to do; we had originally booked Wales as a group trip, so if they're up for it still i'll do that, if not then, Brighton is a tad easier to get to.
Not quite grinning ear to ear but a contented smile. God I've missed this.

Re: The athletics/running thread
As far as motivation to run/ bike or swim is concerned I struggle unless there's a race to train for. I have joined a local tri group which helps and I'm getting some swimming in at the local pool. My problem is, and always will be, the bike. I have an indoor setup and do what I can but outdoor cycling at this time of year is not really fun.Gary the Enfield wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 4:23 pmIs this a charity place? No, it's a deferred ballot place. I was fortunate to have a ballot place for this year but had to defer because of my leg. This email was confirming my deferred place for 2022Gary the Enfield wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 4:23 pmIs this a charity place? Ah I see! Have you given in and entered for the ballot for next year?
Big hill session last night, 25 hill reps of one hill, short rest then 10 minute reps of a shorter, steeper hill. Funnily enough this was the first session I did with the club many a month ago. Had to stop four times then and skipped out on the last hill. No stops this time, over 750ft of climbing banked and a sense that we're getting there. Legs feel like they are dangling off this morning. Lovely stuff.

We did hills as well. An absolute beast of one. Ran up for 90sec then had 2 mins to get back to the start, so limited recovery. Managed 9 of the advertised 12, which was more than I expected. Continuous hills are a great way to get fit.KeyserSoze wrote: ↑Wed Nov 03, 2021 10:21 amAh I see! Have you given in and entered for the ballot for next year?
