Who should we jog on in January? (2022 version)
We did one of these threads in the run-up to the January 2021 window, and that window went well, so let's rub the lamp again...
As with last year, the question is simple (if hypothetical). It's not predicting what Evatt will do, but asking: who would YOU get rid of? Obviously that assumes we can find a recipient (could be on loan), and that we don't end up with like five players left. Don't worry your pretty little head with the hiring side; just ask yourself which of these players you think shouldn't be registered to us in February, and tick their box of doom.
For reference, the first 12 players are out of contract in summer; asterisked players are contracted to summer 2023. We're only allowed 20 spaces so I've omitted Santos, whose contract is also to summer 2023, plus the three who are tied down to 2024: Dapo Afolayan, Declan John and George Johnston. Voting open until Feb 1 and you can change your mind, if such a thing isn't anathema these days.
As nobody can tell who voted for whom, feel free to post below. And remember: it's only a thought experiment.

Interesting…my gut is that it should be more bodies in than people out, but Comley and Edwards feel a bit pointless.
I’d look to upgrade Brockbank and Gordon and ship those out (loan or frees). Don’t rate either at this level.
Keep forgetting we still have Crawford under contract. Another option that might be helpful to have around right now.

Comley, Crawford, Edwards, Greenidge, Tutte and Delf.
Baps is 4th choice now, I think, and as that he'll do until summer. It's really close on some of the young lads, but that youth saves them.
January needs to mostly be about adding quality, not getting rid of players we've actually used this season.

Those plus Kachunga for me. I think Delf is a better option than Kachunga but I’d not keep him if we can find a suitor.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 9:33 pmComley, Crawford, Edwards, Greenidge, Tutte and Delf.

Yeah, we don't need both in a squad.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 10:36 pmThose plus Kachunga for me. I think Delf is a better option than Kachunga but I’d not keep him if we can find a suitor.
I'd be interested to hear DSB's views.

Agree with Ghost in that we just need to add a bit of quality rather than a complete squad overhaul. At present we’ve got 3 spare squad spaces, so getting shut of just one over 21 outfielder would free up enough room for the required additions. Getting Darcy and Politic back (hopefully) will also alleviate depth issues without counting towards the squad cap.
Baptiste - would keep around just for experience, good guy for the younger lads to learn off.
Comley - yeah get rid.
Crawford - fairly confident his St Johnstone loan will be made permanent in January.
Delfouneso - no desperate need to get rid of him, can do a job in an injury crisis. You’d only move him on if you can guarantee getting a better player in to replace him.
Edwards - honestly no idea. Saw glimpses of a good defender (I think), but that’s two years ago now. Will he ever be fully fit?
Gordon - we definitely need a better backup LB with John seemingly slightly injury prone, but it’s not the most pressing issue at this moment in time so no qualms with keeping him around.
Greenidge - Seems to have done okay for Barnet since forcing his way into the side and his introduction has actually coincided with a pickup in form for the Bees. Hopefully he continues to do well for them so they make his loan permanent in January. Thanks for the comically bad throw-ins lad.
Tutte - keep for the same reasons as Baptiste. Also not bad CM depth.
Brockbank - Bolton through and through but sentiment doesn’t win you football matches. RB is in desperate need of reinforcement and Brocky will likely be a casualty of that.
Kachunga - we need so much more output from our forward players not named Afolayan. Looks like he’s just going through the motions and has no real desire to play the game anymore. Would happily bin him off, but unfortunately I can’t see anyone coming in for him either permanently or on loan.
Moving on say Brockbank would take available squad spaces to four. That’d be enough to get in a new right back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and a centre forward. That would be a very good January transfer window in my opinion.

Re: Who should we jog on in January? (2022 version)
Your ideal recruitment is to replace your back-upsn with top level and make your current first choice your new back ups. Obviously it never quite works like that.
We gambled on full backs (arguably again) and it hasn't worked and for me we might as well try to get in first choice top end league one of each. Plus Sarc replacement. Plus one forward. And then, depending on the view of Amaechi, another forward. That's enough for Jan to keep us up and forward looking for me.

I agree about needing the strengthen there, but I am fairly certain I'd keep Brockbank as well as adding a right back.brommers95 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 11:23 pmBrockbank - Bolton through and through but sentiment doesn’t win you football matches. I know it sounds a bit Owen Coyle, but every time I've heard players talk about the squad (and the few times I've spoken to folk around the place) Brockbank is cited as the guy who anchors the club's culture and identity. "Mr Bolton Wanderers" I think Santos called him. "The heart and soul of the place" was what someone else said to me. I don't think he'll be joining us on what will hopefully be our journey up the leagues, but I don't think he's a terrible player and he adds value in the dressing room.
Sarce leaving has had me focused on the dressing room culture side of things.
I completely get the "sentiment doesn't win you matches" aspect and that's 100% true - but culture builds clubs. In the summer I said I wanted him to be the utility option in defence, with 8 specialists available for the back four. I think I still want that.
That's another reason I'd love to see Politic involved and signed up, if that's best for his recovery and development. He is our product and is talked of as supremely professional. Exactly the sort of player we need involved.

If the loan players wages are being paid in full by the borrowing clubs, is there much to be gained in moving them on in Jan? I mean, if it's easy enough to do then fine, but it wouldn't free up any squad spaces for us.
Of the non loanees clearly Comley should be moved on if possible so we can stop paying him, and then I think Edwards should be loaned out if possible. Beyond that I think we then have enough wiggle room to add players without getting rid of anyone else.

Don't we have one free squad place (and carrying Comley who isn't registered) - so not sure how that's enough wiggle room. We need a number of players. And that would mean deregistering some who then couldn't play. And the kids aren't counted. So in reality to bring some in we're going to need to shift a fair few out.The_Gun wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 10:34 amIf the loan players wages are being paid in full by the borrowing clubs, is there much to be gained in moving them on in Jan? I believe we're allowed to register 22 players excluding keepers and under 21s, and by my count we currently have 19. Move Edwards on and that gives us room to bring in four new signings.
Edit: That would be four new players plus the option of bringing back Politic and Darcy.

Last I heard Iles said one space was left (which would be Comley but wasn't registered) now Sarce has gone that's two. But not sure club want to pay for non registered players so I'd argue its one space plus Comley plus then any new additions....The_Gun wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 10:49 amI believe we're allowed to register 22 players excluding keepers and under 21s, and by my count we currently have 19. Looks right - perhaps Iles' post I saw was Pre Crawford going?
Certainly scope to be getting some in first but I think we still need more than 4.
Re: Who should we jog on in January? (2022 version)
Yeah long term we need more than four, but even that is a lot for one window. Without wanting to sound too obvious, it's the quality of the additions which matters. Four upgrades on what we have now and I'd wager we'd be pushing for playoffs.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 11:31 amLooks right - perhaps Iles' post I saw was Pre Crawford going?

I think we'll need more than 4 and I don't think we're close to top 6 even with good additions. Personally. Lets be realistic we're closer to the bottom 3 right now and the teams at the top are a much larger gap from us quality wise than last season.The_Gun wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 11:37 amYeah long term we need more than four, but even that is a lot for one window. Its vital we pick up some points between now and January because its harder to attract the right players at this level if they think its a sinking ship.

Re: Who should we jog on in January? (2022 version)
I know you trend towards the pessimistic, Insano, but I think we showed enough at the start of the season to suggest that four good additions would see us finish at least mid table. This is assuming that we still believe the coaching to be strong enough, and the team cohesion to still be there.
Edit: I'd caveat that by saying it's probably quite unlikely we will be able to bring in four high quality League One players in Jan without paying transfer fees.
