Re: Over (Keith) Hill and down the 'Dale....EFL Trophy vs Rochdale (Happened Yesterday. What is time anyway?)
Having watched it back again, we were really good.
Our pressing was excellent. You could hear our bench screaming "Pressure! Close the door!" and did we ever. We pressed them into error after error and when the press didn't lead to transitions we dropped back into two banks of four and let Williams pick up the pieces between the lines. It was exactly how our defending should work. Hard press, turn overs and then denial of space. We still made far too many individual errors at the back and a better team may well have punished us; but that's another issue. When they broke the press we used intelligent fouls to break up play.
Individually we saw some great displays. I said after Pompey that Kachunga would put it together soonish and he did that against Dale. He worked hard, he was press resistant in possession, he was creative and he should have scored. I know a lot of people don't like him, but for me he has been improving and is a consummate team player. Everything an Evatt wide player gets coached to do he did in that game, even if he lacks the out and out talent of a Dapo.
The same goes for Sheehan in the middle, who put in exactly the type of display we saw when he came off the bench vs Pompey - but this time people gave him the ball and followed his directions. He ran the middle of the park, we played through the compartments beautifully and Dale didn't get near him. Thomason helped massively too. His running, his willingness to work in both boxes and constant desire for the ball were great. He still struggles with execution, but if his technical game improves he will be a good player for us. Sheehan and Williams (also excellent) were talking to him all the time and that was huge for his match awareness.
I've seen the game twice and enjoyed it both times. I will probably give it a third watch, because of that 90 minutes about 80 minutes of it was Bolton playing exactly how we are supposed to.
Downsides existed. Izzy still isn't a right back, even though his running down that flank was excellent. We've too many errors in us. We are wasteful in the opposition area. Still, a thousand times better than our recent servings. 3-0, Doyle scored, a wonder goal from Dapo...loved it.

Didn’t watch the game live but will probably watch it back today. Have seen the highlights though - George Thomason, how much has this kid bulked up?! Looks much more capable of handling the physical side of the game now.
Really surprised to see Evatt name such a strong side, could prove to be a master stroke though if that gives the lads the confidence they need to turn results around in November.
(Thank god that poor Baptiste pass didn’t lead to a Rochdale goal - there’s a probably a parallel universe where it did and we go on to lose to Rochdale’s reserves and confidence is completely shot )

Was thinking exactly that this morning while reading the match report. Onwards and upwards. Do Stockport, hopefully draw a line under the Sarce stuff. Then we've got Crewe (bottom), Wycombe (twice - 4th), Donny (2nd-bottom), Cheltenham (15th), Fleetwood (3rd-bottom) and Accy (12th) this side of Christmas. Might be time for another of Evatt's sudden bursts of wins,. like last November.

Quite so. If I were Dale's manager I might be having warm words with a couple of front men for what were clear cut chances almost easier to score than miss from. The highlights show just how bad the misses were. We won well and deservedly so, but it could have been a different story score wise. .

Aye. That opening highlight, of dear old Baps absent-mindedly giving what should have been a 15-yard sideways pass barely enough juice to make it five, had me watching through tented fingers. The other chance on the highlights was a lot later at 3-0, but noted it could have been very different had they accepted that gift.
Not the first time Baps has underhit an early pass, either - remember this one from this time last year?

Re: Over (Keith) Hill and down the 'Dale....EFL Trophy vs Rochdale (Happened Yesterday. What is time anyway?)
Baps put in a generally strong display, but made several errors from which a better side would have had joy. He stood on the ball a few times, put in a couple of short passes and that sort of thing. Still has it between the ears, but he was pushing the body even last season.
I am still full of praise for the lads today, but it was a perfect game for us. Our main weaknesses come against sides who are able to go back to front quite quickly and whose physicality makes their press better than 'Dales was. We do okay against sides that open up and want to play pretty football.
If we played like that every week we'd win far more than we'd lose, but we'd have lost that game to the best sides in our division.
Izzy has done really well standing in, but was exposed even against 'Dale. Thomason was great and I want to see him play more games after that, but he needs to add end product. Kachunga was top 2 or 3 performances for me, but I think he has another level beyond that and it's all about him finding the net now for him to kick on (100% his best game in a Bolton shirt).
It did feel like that early miss could have changed the game, but I saw enough to make me stick to my guns on saying we need to tweak things in the coming window rather than completely reboot (as much as I love a transfer). I have felt for a while that Kachunga was carrying his lack of a preseason and he had something to offer, so hopefully that's the case and we can get Baka and Xavi fit. We need additions badly in key areas, but there's more in this squad than we've seen so far. It may be that we need those signings to unlock what's left in what we already have, but hopefully we can see it before January.

Dunno if I'm projecting but it seems Dapo is working his way through the Wanderers Book of Wonder Goals (& celebrations).
This one instantly made me think of Anelka vs The Arse...

Not projecting at all. I see so many shades of Diouf in Dapo, just seems to be a nice lad where as Diouf was - if we are honest - a scumbag.Jim_McDonuts wrote: ↑Wed Nov 03, 2021 7:49 pmDunno if I'm projecting but it seems Dapo is working his way through the Wanderers Book of Wonder Goals (& celebrations).

On the pitch, though, he's the sort of player other fans loathe. We need to work on using him better as an outball when we are under pressure, as Sam did with Dioufy. He has that ability.
There are aspects of the modern "glory days" in this side. The fun bits, at least.

I think a formal.letter of apology to Bruce Rioja Esq. will draw a line under it. Delete everything up to and including the equals sign.
Interesting to invoke Anelka. That type of goal - cut in off the left, run at terrified defence, pick a corner - always make me think of Thierry Henry. These are high comparisons.

And yes, these are indeed high comparisons. Keep it up young man
The diouf comparison is an interesting one (who could forget _that_ song "he spits, he bites" etc.) and being disliked by other teams. Course the 'btecOkocha' tag came in early and certainly a better model - other teams hated him 'cos he was so good. Though flashback to how I once ended up watching one of our games against Utd in deepest darkest Salford (Lower Broughton) pub and the reds in their loved JJ walking round their players (esp when bloody bekkkham scored 91st minute after we'd battered them throughout).
JJ, Henry, Anelka (who I really warmed to when at ours) - that's some bar...

We're safe for the next round - they too topped their group and thus, like us, get a home game. We can't play Port Vale again so our visitors could be:
**Donny (23rd, D3)
Fleetwood (22nd, D3)
Harrogate (7th, D4)
Hartlepool (10th, D4)
Lincoln (13th, D3)
Oldham (22nd, D4)
*Shrewsbury (21st, D3) or Wigan (1st, D3)
*who face off tomorrow in Salop; only a Wigan win sees them through
**we'd have to postpone the game for a laugh
