Amos, along with Spearing and several others over the years, fall into the the 'what-happened-to-the-lad-we-had-on-loan?' category.
I was convinced at the time that spending the farm on Amos was one of our best bits of business ever, and that we'd be selling him for top Dollar in no time. This is how I've ended up working in textiles and not football.

Didn't help him playing behind that shambolic defence, but he really was bad. I wonder how different it would've been if he'd come in under Parkinson and had wheater and beevers as a shield?
I quite enjoy these alternative history speculations. If Lennon had been appointed instead of Freedman I think we'd have gone straight back up (but almost certainly not stayed long). Had Parky Ben in charge a season earlier instead of Lennon I think we may have stayed up.
Anyway. They didn't.

Spearing was head and shoulders above (do your own jokes) anyone else in training. He got put into less and less creative teams where he had to do more and more of what he simply couldn't do and it seemed to kill his desire to play the game.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 10:13 pmAmos, along with Spearing and several others over the years, fall into the the 'what-happened-to-the-lad-we-had-on-loan?' category.
I remember him running the show a few times, sat on his own in front of a back four just mopping up and passing it off. When he had Lee and Danns to find it was okay, but when you think back to the others in that side (Andrews, Trotter, Pratley etc) that squad was garbage - not just at Championship level but in terms of balance. The recruitment at that time was awful, try as some might to advise better pathways.
It got worse when he was asked to play in a two and press forward. It just wasn't his game. He needed to sit in front of two big lads who could step out and head things away for him, whilst he did their passing for them.
The situation now (aside from the injury crisis) is miles better. Recruitment, planning etc are all way ahead of where we were.

I went to Lennon's first game at Birmingham and spearing was like a dog let off a leash. Superb that day. Then Lennon just seemed to go off him and it killed his career really (metaphorically -i know he's still playing)

A couple of Colin Hendry's would be really handy about now..(wishful thinking).GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 10:57 pmHe needed to sit in front of two big lads who could step out and head things away for him, whilst he did their passing for them.

I still find it hard to imagine that we'll sign a centre back in January and I think the injury crisis makes it even less likely.
I'm guessing, obviously; but we will be stretching the budget to cover absentees and centreback is now suddenly the least of our problems. Unless people leave I can't see them finding the money for another central defender. Even if they could I think Evatt would show faith in Johnston and Rico as a pairing.

Well, we've kept three clean sheets recently. Two against 2 teams who collectively have the same goals scored tally as us, and look destined to join Rochdale one division down, who were the third clean sheet...I'm happy with three clean sheets but still not happy with our ability to leak goals.
Obviously, we can but speculate what Evatt might do or whether had have funds enough, but the defence still needs sorting for me

Sounding increasingly like Del Amaechi will be starting tomorrow. Evatt reckons he has a decision to make - I'm not sure he has.

I do wonder how much of the "we have to look after him and be sure he can start" stuff in the press is for the benefit of HSV.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 2:08 pmSounding increasingly like Del Amaechi will be starting tomorrow. Evatt reckons he has a decision to make - I'm not sure he has.

Very good call, I hadn't thought of that. I doubt they were best chuffed when he managed to bost his foot before we'd even got going.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 2:19 pmI do wonder how much of the "we have to look after him and be sure he can start" stuff in the press is for the benefit of HSV.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 2:08 pmSounding increasingly like Del Amaechi will be starting tomorrow. Evatt needs to stop saying "adapt and overcome" in every interview like he has been listening to a marine's memoires during the drive into work.

Whatever happens, or who plays or doesn't, keeping Cheltenham out is a priority. I doubt we'll get much scoring opportunity first half as we always to do better after the break, but we need to be either level or (cough) ahead at half-time. We're the home side even if we have to play Evatt, the flag wavers And the tea lady,so let's hope lady luck smiles on us for a change. So...

I'm now imagining evatt serenading him with his version of their underwhelming world cup song ... 'Don't go home too soon'.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 4:45 pmI wouldn't worry.
