And, of course, you'd have equally as conciliatory had it been Pritti Patel who'd chimed up with it.
May the bridges I burn light your way
Re: The Politics Thread
My emotional reaction to Priti Patel is complicated and shall remain subject to patient-doctor confidentiality
In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

Re: The Politics Thread
The rhetoric that Putin is a terrible person who is endangering world war three doesn’t exactly line up with ‘naughty boy mr Putin go and stand in the corner for one minute’ type sanctions we’ve imposed today.
It’s quite a concern how our establishment has become embroiled so heavily with Russian money and influence and are now hamstrung by that.
On a side note can we send Corbyn over there to the border - I’m sure he can negotiate a peace deal. Or get shot. Either way.

You think Putin will seriously care whatever sanctions we put on him? My sneaking suspicion is the Chinese are quietly backing him with their eyes firmly on an incursion into Taiwan.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 6:36 pmThe rhetoric that Putin is a terrible person who is endangering world war three doesn’t exactly line up with ‘naughty boy mr Putin go and stand in the corner for one minute’ type sanctions we’ve imposed today.

I think you are right but the Russian economy is not in a great place so economic sanctions will have an impact. Not the weak ones we’ve put in place like…but still.Hoboh wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 8:07 pmYou think Putin will seriously care whatever sanctions we put on him? Chap on the Beeb was saying much of Putin's billions are controlled by Oligarchs based in the west. Should be relatively easy to hit him hard in the pocket if we, the west, collectively want to do so?

Cynically one might say they were a warning klaxon to all the Russian Tory donors to get their money out of the country or risk sanctions. I guess I’d argue you don’t need to be that cynical really as that seemed to be exactly what it was.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 11:20 amThey are, shirley, little more than an opening gambit at this point, no?BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 11:00 am

The ‘well we leave ourselves something in the tank if he’s naughty again’ argument doesn’t really work as you are basically saying you expect him to escalate further.

So, if we went "full sanctions" right now, and he escalated further, what do we do next, send troops?BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 3:53 pmCynically one might say they were a warning klaxon to all the Russian Tory donors to get their money out of the country or risk sanctions. Seems like Mr Putin is doing a modern day Queen Victoria Empire-ing march sticking the hammer and sickle instead of the Union flag in the deck and handing framed photographs of himself out.."Welcome to the Mother Country".... Band plays the Volga Boat Song....

If he proceeds after we’ve gone full sanctions then withholding sanctions won’t make any difference and only make it more likely to escalate.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 3:59 pmSo, if we went "full sanctions" right now, and he escalated further, what do we do next, send troops?BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 3:53 pmCynically one might say they were a warning klaxon to all the Russian Tory donors to get their money out of the country or risk sanctions. The only shot we have of stopping this is hurting their economy so badly that his position weakens.
I think hoboh is right. Nothing is likely to stop him so the harder and earlier we go the better in my view.

Re: The Politics Thread
Our sanctions, even full blown are probably the equivalent of trying to wipe and elephant's arse with a tea leaf and some of them could hurt us more than him...
As Brucie says, up for that poker game...

Re: The Politics Thread
I'd guess keeping the powder dry on future sanctions is a waste of time now, I really feel for the poor civilians caught up in this, little people to suffer as per usual.
The next thing is what do we do?
Well for starters cutting our armed forces should stop at once, sod paying for all this green stuff we need men and equipment rapidly, who knows how the next few years will pan out after this.
I am really sorry for the Ukraine but frankly there is little short of ww3 if we intervene and no one should forget if Russia gets invaded it is written in their defence to use nukes.
And I thought the weather was going to make this a lousy day!

You and I know there is more chance of Putin spontaneously combusting than us launching any sort of military action against Russia in any way.Hoboh wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2022 7:32 amI'd guess keeping the powder dry on future sanctions is a waste of time now, I really feel for the poor civilians caught up in this, little people to suffer as per usual.

The problem is Putin knows that too.
The west won’t fight Russia as the costs are too high. So it’s simply off the table.
