What LE said ^ , kids don’t do the run up as that makes it even more wearing on a young body. Triple jump is my favourite event. Interesting article about it here

But to clarify:
“Of all athletics events, the triple jump is widely acknowledged by sports scientists as one of the most physically demanding.
Research at the University of Iowa a few years ago showed that, at the landing between the hop and step phases, the force exerted by a triple jumper on the ground can be the equivalent of up to 22 times their bodyweight – just about the highest measured force that a human limb is exposed to during any intentional activity.”
Why runners are such pansy’s compared to us field athletes

Was always called "Long Jump" in school sports, and the other "Hop. step and jump. Never knew one without a run up.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 12:55 pmTa! It’s quite simple Worthy. Triple Jumpers are stronger, better athletes then anyone that plods round an ultra or an Ironman basicallyWorthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 5:58 pmYeah, I still don't get it!Gooner Girl wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 1:03 pmWorthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 12:55 pmTa! I've just spent a few minutes watching the men's 35km race walk at the World Championships.
It's still as hilarious an event as ever (to my immature mind anyway).

He might not say it himself, but I feel this fantastic photo of Lever End and the future Mrs Lever End smashing park run today complete in wedding attire today needs to be shown. 2nd and a new pb LE whilst wearing a suit?! perhaps you should wear it every time you run!

Last time I saw him running in a suit, he had his probation officer in his slip stream!
Great pic though LE! Good luck to you both for Wednesday.

Thanks, that was a lot of fun. They had a proper photographer there for the Yorkshire Day thing, so we've got some great pics. He's made a 'Wedding Album' on the Roberts Parkrun page.
It was 5 mins faster than my stag do parkrun last weekend, which was quite frankly an ordeal! For obvious reasons. Not helped by being given a shot of 70% poteen to drink afterwards.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Track and field season finished now in the gooner girl house with the twins U13 team doing very well in the Sussex final today, competing against the big boys of Brighton, Crawley etc. I had a disastrous season - put it down to old age and no training, but finished 11th in the country for triple jump and 13th for high jump in my age group. Just need to find some motivation to run this coming winter now, been sacking it off regularly for the best part of a year or so now. Zero motivation.

Struggled around 4.5K yesterday with oldest son. The realisation that he’s only going to get faster and I’m only going to get slower was slightly depressing.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Not necessarily. I'm 55 and regularly running against (and bettering) people 30 years younger. Not because I'm a good runner. LE is consistently more than 5 minutes faster than me over 5km. But if you run often, you get better. It's not rocket science.Gooner Girl wrote: ↑Mon Sep 12, 2022 10:12 amStruggled around 4.5K yesterday with oldest son. First run in Huddersfield. About 700ft of climbing. The town is the bottom of a washbasin, I say.
Comes after a month off after some tw*t smacked a cricket ball into my knee during nets. Pro tip: never trust a batter in the nets who doesn't have wickets to defend :/
London sadly not happening now but I'll make up for it with some wandering in the Peaks.

Yes, but I don’t want to run often! That’s the problem!Gary the Enfield wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 10:05 amNot necessarily. I'm 55 and regularly running against (and bettering) people 30 years younger.
