I mean, for every Trafford there's a Crellin. And not every higher-echelon loanee goes straight into a team.

But if Teddy's not better than Southwood, I shall be very sorry, and I don't think we'll be needing an open-top bus next May.

He played 46 league games for the L2 title winners last season; he's not come to us to warm the bench.

I'd venture to suggest then when you compare similar numbers of goals, but far fewer points per minute, the difference might be the useless c*nts at the other end.

You don't pick the order you sign people, but so far for me the only player we've signed who addresses a glaring need is Dalby, and maybe Taylor. Still nothing out wide.
Reasonable on both counts, but how they fit together > Collins + McAtee + Lolos.

And if you have aspirations of being any good and getting promoted, you probably don't have a couple of "glaring needs," maybe a few could do betters..

Given we’ve committed big to Dalby, I wouldn’t have thought Lowe would be on our radar.

This strikes at a fundamental concern, though - is Dalby our only striker?

Under Evatt it became almost comic how we subbed strikers so predictably/religiously, but Schumacher's Plymouth also heavily rotated Hardie, Cosgrove, Ennis (another Wanderers-linked player). Clearly Dalby is the starter, but who else have we got as a 9? McAtee, who looked like a fish on the moon up there? Abimbola? Dan Bloody Nlundulu?

We need a new LB & wingers to boost the XI, but after that we also need depth across the front three. Some of that may be upper-tier loanees, but probably not of Lowe's stature. However, get a kid too young, or worse nobody at all, and the Schuey-Harkin axis will be pilloried should something go wrong with Project Dalby (injury, loss of form).

We’ve given Dalby a four year deal, so he must be viewed as the starting 9. Lowe tracks as a similar profile of player to Sam, and of course would also expect to be a starter, so it doesn’t look like a fit.

Assuming we want to run with two senior players per position, we’ve got Dalby as first choice and Vic as back up. Ideally we’d also bring in wide forwards who can do a job through the middle if needed.

The Vic who won't be fully fit till December and may not even be registered? Forgive me if I sadly fold away the bunting....

It's a difficult one. I completely agree - I'd be surprised if we splurge big on another striker. But IMO we need someone (new) who can play up top. It may be a different type - speedy - but if we don't, I will be disappointed. And worried.

Indeed. Can’t risk Dalby being the only one who is able to lead the line.

One option might - and I stress this is just me spitballing - be Dara Costelloe. Last summer Burnley sent the Irishman on loan to Accy, where he scored 5 in 21 from a combination of up top and left-wing; Burney fast-tracked him up a division to Northampton, where Nobby kept him up front and he scored 5 in 16.

Leyton Orient are interested and were hoping to get him for a low price. MK Dons have now loomed into view, but I wonder if he'd fancy a move to us. Could be useful in a couple of positions, we're local, big club...

Obviously Fergal might think his fellow Irishman is a bag o'shite, but I'm just saying there's options around and they needn't be either Must Play Every Game or a wet-eared greenhorn.

Schuey said he’d be back in October/November. Still, we might not register him, but we’ll still have to pay him. Spending big time on another centre forward seems doubtful given the messaging we’ve been given regarding running with a leaner squad.

Schumacher's quote was "we'll probably see him October-November time" but to me that means he wouldn't be fully fit to run the line alone until December. Remember we're talking about if Dalby is injured or shit.

Remember also how we struggled like hell up front from January to May. To repeat that problem would be absolute insanity. And we don't have to spend big to get cover.

We don’t have to spend big to get cover, but Nathan Lowe would require spending big, and wouldn’t come as cover.

I dunno, could be memory playing tricks, but we only had one SKD. He very rarely got injured for any length of time...

We had backup - often not the best backup but we still had it. Likes of Les Ferdinand, Borgetti etc…and of course ultimately signed Anelka.

Fair point. Don't recall Borgetti playing in the league much?

Did a few times. Davies was in fairness rarely injured. One of the old style warhorses who just got on with it.

I do think it’s a slightly different situation here. We need cover but also options - games where we need a goal etc you need options to change things in attacking areas.

Our first prem promotion we got 4 strikers in McGinlay, Coyle, Fabiano and big Mixu. A relative luxury for a championship side at the time but I guess showed its worth.

Going back further to when we were hanging around the lower leagues, we had Mixu as the 9 with Mcginley, Coyle and De Freitas. Diddsy was the provider. Mcginley was a goal scorer and Coyle chipped in with a few.
Starting the season with just Dalby and Macatee is nowhere near enough.
