Christy Pym? You are making these up.

Nope that was a genuine suggestion - Mansfield released him. But Bertie is on the money - Nixon has said we’re in for Jamie Jones*, and Iles has said he might be onto something…

I kind of think keepers at this level are much of a muchness, the exceptional (Trafford) and unfortunate (Crellin) aside. Obviously hoping TSL is more of the former.
Southwood was an able understudy but it makes sense that he would want to go back down south and play for Darrell Clarke again; likewise any of the names wouldn't keep me up with thoughts of terror of them appearing.

Does this suggest Ceesay isn’t on the radar so much?Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sun Jul 06, 2025 8:30 pmIlesy; “It is believed a left back and a striker are still on the cards, with a back-up goalkeeper now joining the list, but Bolton have not ruled out doing even more business if they choose to move on any more of their squad.”
With that in mind, the current guessing game online is trying to identify the trialist goalkeeper from a grainy screengrab. Suggestions include Ben Hamer, Christy Pym and Paul Farman, but to me it doesn’t look as much like any of them as it does like Schuey himself![]()

Apparently Jones was in net in the second half vs Tranmere. Caught off his line from what I've read. There's also clips online showing his mistake when he went for a water bottle and mistakenly picked up a back pass.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sun Jul 06, 2025 8:45 pmNope that was a genuine suggestion - Mansfield released him. I'm getting Crellin vibes with the Everton link. For a backup keeper we could do worse but if we're not confident and our loan keeper starts badly we could end up needing a Gilks style signing to come in and sort out the mess.
Still I suspect we'll be signing our covering goalkeeper by proximity rather than quality as the pool of people wanting to up sticks and move their family to benchwarm is likely to be relatively small

I am inclined to agree Bernie. We have done well so far in the market but still need to sign a couple wise older experienced heads to help the youngsters and another goalscorer for sure to make top 2 this season.Bertie Wooster wrote: ↑Sun Jul 06, 2025 6:09 pmDespite the 2No potentially exciting winger signings, possibly Ceesay and even maybe Kenny from Celtic I still don't think that we are a anywhere near being a top 2 team - and that is because we still lack a proper experienced tough captain / leader on the pitch, and for me this is the most important position if we are to have any chance of success next season.

Iles: “it seems the logical move to bring in someone with a few more miles on the clock to help two very young keepers on their way, even if it looks unlikely to be ex-Wigan stopper Jamie Jones.”

Aye - I can’t remember off the top of my bonce (and am on holiday so I can’t be arsed searching properly) but I think our oldest signing so far is Dalby at 25. I’m sure they’ve all been checked for resilience etc but there was definitely talk of hiring one or two older than the squad’s default 24-28 age range.irie Cee Bee wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 2:22 amI am inclined to agree Bernie. However, the natural fit for that leader role is either centre-back (already have plenty and added Taylor) or def mid (hardly understocked numerically, added Simons, targeting Ceesay). We need another striker but have targeted young Kenny. We’re after another LB but Jacob never fit that scarred-warrior description. Wonder if we go for an older LB now just to add that personality profile to the squad mix? But you don’t want to ask a 35-year-old to plough up and down all day…

I’m thinking more experienced left back too. I mean maybe not 35 but someone 30-32 with experience - maybe more a defender than Cogley for balance. Ideally one who can thump a decent cross over.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 9:10 amAye - I can’t remember off the top of my bonce (and am on holiday so I can’t be arsed searching properly) but I think our oldest signing so far is Dalby at 25. I'm not saying that we need a 34-35 year old, like BWFCI says someone perhaps 30-32 but an organiser, a talker - a leader ! hopefully someone with experience of captaining a side promoted from league 1, that sort of profile.

Leahy ticks most of the boxes.

I think age is less important than mentality - someone who has seen a few things in the game and rolls the sleeves up and gets stuck in regardless. Who sets standards and doesn’t accept the young uns saying they are a bit upset as there was a mean comment on their instagram.Bertie Wooster wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 9:38 amI'm not saying that we need a 34-35 year old, like BWFCI says someone perhaps 30-32 but an organiser, a talker - a leader ! hopefully someone with experience of captaining a side promoted from league 1, that sort of profile.

Enda Stevens turns 35 this week, but he would fit the bill of a left back who has played regularly at a higher level and would probably take a one year deal.

One risk of the older player is being a permacrock, and IIRC Enda has…. struggled recently.

Yes, fair point. It looks like he did have injuries last season.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 11:17 amOne risk of the older player is being a permacrock, and IIRC Enda has…. struggled recently.
I wonder how set in stone the plans are for left back. As in, has Schuey decided that he definitely wants a new starter there, or will Conway be given a chance over the next couple of weeks to show he can take that role?

I don't think age is the only determinant for a captain - nor necessarily the best determinant. Nobby was 24, replacing a 31 year old JJ. We did comparatively well under both. I think who it is, is more important than how old they are. That said, out of last year's crop, I've no idea whether any of them are Captain material and not seen this year's intake on the field yet.
