Who’s to say that Simons and Morley, or Simons and Sheehan won’t be superior? Those combinations remain untested.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 8:01 pmI mean who else have we got who can do the running you need? Morley is a sitter but I rather think Simons is a much better version of him.The_Gun wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 7:39 pmI couldn’t say with any confidence that Thomason would’ve been a starter this season, so I’m not sure it’s that big a loss.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 7:28 pmI’d say that him going to Wrexham a league up is a big loss and we will need a quality replacement. Sheehan is not the answer to anything other than staying in league one and Morley doesn’t and can’t do what Thomason does. But money talks
So we need the all action energy type to go with him. Sheehan is not it and we all saw how much better Simons and Thommo midfield looked compared to Morley and Sheehan the other night.
A serious replacement would be needed. And a particular type. They need to be a hard runner and physical.

Who’s to say? Sheehan is a luxury player we’ve known that for two years and Morley isn’t going to bring the energy and running Thomason does which is sorely needed.The_Gun wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 8:06 pmWho’s to say that Simons and Morley, or Simons and Sheehan won’t be superior? Ultimately midfield was poor last season and Simons looks quality but he would have played with Thomason in pretty sure so we need to find a player with similar qualities. Clearly Ceesay was the plan but now that’s off. Any player who offers what Thomason does is going to cost very decent money.

Let me know when we complete the transition from “none of these should be professional footballers” to “we can’t live without them”

I think we can live without them all but we definitely need to replace Thomasson.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 8:12 pmLet me know when we complete the transition from “none of these should be professional footballers” to “we can’t live without them”![]()

Wycombe brought Simons in as a replacement for Morley, they play similar games but spraying the ball around is their forte. Thomason and Simons, one left and one right footed complement each other. Thomason is a box to box and provides energy and bite. All this aside he’s the Captain too.
Schumacher said post Barrow we need a couple of characters through the door, well if Thomason goes, we need three and a Captain.

Yep. Leaves us needing not just a couple of strikers and a goalkeeper, but a genuine 1st team defensive midfielder too.
Proper bummed out about this one.

I think it’s tipping it from a bit to do to an awful lot to do and time running out for me.truewhite15 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 8:42 pmYep. Leaves us needing not just a couple of strikers and a goalkeeper, but a genuine 1st team defensive midfielder too.

Yes we can replace Thomason but it’s not just getting the right type it’s also the right attitude ideally leadership skills.
Midfield with Thommo gone is nowhere near strong enough we already know up top is, we lack a specialist senior left back and centre half is still I guess questionable.
Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
Getting £1.2m for Thomason is great business for us, and should help in getting closer to being genuine title contenders.
No way Schuey would sanction this if he wasn’t confident that it will allow us to come out of the summer stronger.

Not sure it works like that. Clearly can’t turn the money down or prevent such a big move for Thommo.
That doesn’t mean he thinks we can come out of it stronger. Might just mean we can’t do a lot about it and that’s how it is.

Not if it stays in the bank.

And as jmjhb says it might be appearance related, staged or owt in between. (as might our incomings for balance)...

I do feel a little like I've missed out on all the references to the queue for Sheehan...maybe they were posted about the same time as our CEO announcement...BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 9:07 pmNot sure it works like that. It’s £1m, not £10m. If SS thought this was going to materially impact his ability to get us promoted I’m sure he’d have been able to veto.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 9:07 pmNot sure it works like that. Clearly can’t turn the money down or prevent such a big move for Thommo.

Got to allow him to do his business. I agree with this bit.The_Gun wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 9:11 pmIt’s £1m, not £10m. I mean I don’t think it’s ’oh we need the money so desperately’ thing. But turning down that money would be hard and of course not letting him get a move up to a side with premiership ambitions would be pretty tough.The_Gun wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 9:11 pmIt’s £1m, not £10m. There are sales of ‘I think we can do better’ and other ones that are more circumstantial. I doubt this is by choice. We are a trading club and these things come along.
But I doubt you will save much of any money if we are to replace him with equal quality.
Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
There’s no guarantee we’ll use the money well, but I’d say it shouldn’t be hugely difficult to get a better player for less than £1.2m.
We paid £300k for Simons, who’s two years younger.

Would make a space for an experienced leader....

And/or another player that you can make a profit on in future.
I did say a few weeks ago things would have to be run more sustainably. Thus, transfers like these are inevitable.

Both fair points.
BTW, with Santos and Gethin gone, Thomo is the final link with the fourth-tier squad (unless you count Max Conway, who was around but only 17 and didn't get any senior minutes, even in pre-season). Quiz question: if he goes, who's the longest-serving player left?
