It has to be said I was rather impressed with my drive at Castlerock over in Northern Ireland back in June - a lovely links course that hadn't seen any rain for weeks. One down-wind drive was paced out to around 330 yards! :D

Normally about the 200-230 mark, though. But as I said with my caveat, that's when I connect. It's just as likely to scoot along the ground for 100 yards! :D

when i learned to play golf i played with my grandma's old set of Wilson "Patty Berg" set, it has the most unbelievable sand wedge which i still use today. it also had actual wood woods. which i used up intill i got bought a set when i was 16/17.

and my favourite club in my bag is a ladies mitsubishi 3 wood with graphite shaft. i don't hit anything better off the fairway (apart from 7,8,9 irons)

golf is such a cracking event.

reet, first round proper in 5 years yesterday

my aim was to break 100 on old links. it was fecking blustery as owt, couldn't stand up at times. I managed to get 97 and if i had the speed of the greens i could have got 10 less than that. chipped in at the second for par. good round all in all

"Another session on the driving range next week and I'm up and ready. I'm striking the ball well".

(This is the point where you suddenly start shanking, slicing and duck-hooking balls all over the course. Best keep shtum)

I'm really looking forward to this. Hope the weather's kind to us.

Bit too generous there me thinks, Commie.

First round in 5 years and breaks a ton no sweat and on a links course to boot.

8 I'd say, teach him to keep his gob shut!

OK everyone, 'your best shot ever' time.

Mine was at Hoylake municipal, on a blustery and cold March day in 2001. Par 3, second or third hole, crosswind, five iron, two feet from the pin. Rest of the round was utter shi*e though.

I was 110 yards out on the par four tenth where I play (Northop G.C. in North Wales) and I hit a perfect shot right at the pin. It pitched about two feet before the hole, checked, and rolled in for an eagle.

I've been close, but as of yet the hole-in-one has remained elusive.

Royal St Georges Bermuda. 18 years ago. Dogleg par 4 round a bay in the ocean. They have a tradition of letting anyone use one ball to "have a go" at driving over the bay without affecting your round score. I managed it twice in a week. It's 308 yds......all carry!

Good job it wasn't in the round though; I would have had to use a full 8 iron to get back to the green.

I've hit the flag on a par three and the ball dropped to within about 6 inches, which is definitely the closest I will ever come to a hole in one I imagine (it was a pretty short par 3, though).

Of my recent shots I s'pose driving the green at Calamity Corner (14th at Royal Portrush, 200 yard par 3 with no safety anywhere short) into a daft 30 mph cross-headwind with my trusty 3 iron was fairly special. That was definitely one of my best pars on a par 3!
