I'd sooner take a scrappy 1-0 win that keeps us up than a 3-0 defeat where we played well.

Fact is, they're not. There has to be a balance, if we're to play like we did yesterday and win then I won't be going to the Reebok in the future, I can't afford to watch that every week. If I'm coming out of the ground feeling short changed then it negates the point of going. Many others felt the same yesterday, even though we won, the matchday experience was destroyed by the awful stuff we played.

Points obviously.

But yesterday it was obvious if we got the ball down and played we would create chances, but we kept on playing the long ball. We are just stuck in our ways sometimes.

How many times have we heard that clubs like Nottingham Forrest and West Ham were too good to go down - wonderful entertaining football sides - but at the end of the day they did not get the points.

Similarly who remembers the great 'boring, boring Leeds' side and the Arsenal 1-0 again side! Not pretty but winners never the less.

All of us would love to be entertained every minute of every match - but at the end of the day points are more important.

In the olden days, once the team was save from relegation, they could play more entertaining football - as the pressure was off. Now every match matters - every place up the league equals a further half million pounds plus winnings - and a top four place for Champions League qualification equals mega money.

It may be interesting to establish where most of our funding now comes from - I'm guessing that Season Ticket sales, on the day attendance, shirt sales, programmes, receipts from catering etc is now a decreasing proportion of the clubs revenue and conversely Sky and sponsorship money an ever increasing proportion.

If that’s the case there would be less reason to keep the fans happy by playing 'entertaining' football and ever more reason to grind out the points come what may.

Anybody got any facts on this little hypothesis of mine?

Would love both entertainment and points but if I could only have one then....Points for me

Put it like that and it’s obviously points. I don’t want us to play silky, flowing football if we have to do it in the lower leagues.

However, there is something that bugs me about these types of discussion, and it’s that word – entertainment.

If I’m watching a match as a neutral, then yes, I want to be entertained. For me that means accurate passing, effective movement and great individual skills, topped off with a goal or two.

If I’m watching my own team, then it gets more complex, because there’s an emotional investment in the game. Of course I want to see the things I’ve mentioned, but above all else, I want to see the team perform to the best of their ability.

Take the game against Spurs. We took our chances early on and then gave them nothing for the rest of the game. To a neutral it probably wasn’t a great match, but I was more than satisfied with it.

Against Watford, we played to our opponents strengths and not our own. We’ve got enough quality in the team to outplay sides like that (no disrespect to the Hornets, they came with a plan and stuck to it). Our passing was awful, movement non-existent and we looked like a collection of individuals rather than a team.

I suspect the frustration expressed by our fans, is not because they expect us to play like Barcelona, but because they know that as individuals and as a team we play way below the level that we’re capable of, far too often.

They are not mutually exclusive so as instructed by CAPS I haven't voted.

However as an overseas fan points are obviously more important as I don't have to pay to see them play rubbish, but as a lover of football and Bolton entertainment is important and was always high on the agenda when I did watch them live (from 1953-94).

In reality the answer has to be a mixture of the two, hence I'm not qualified to vote, in such a biased and may I say silly poll.

reason: love to see us bang in four and dominate the opposition... but - here's the crucial thing - what affects my mood more?

if we play sparkling football and lose - I am depressed and moody - irritable and hacked off.
if we play crap football - ditto

if we play crap and win - I am perky and chipper with a bright smile on my face.
if we play brilliantly - ditto

therefore it must be the points that change my mood...

now - what's better value for money - expeciall for my missus and the kids and the dog? it has to be the points every time...

that said - I haven't voted because (let's hope CAPS isn't too easily offended) it's a pointless and lame poll that proves nothing and will change nobody's mind... The T&Cs are preposterous

(does that make me a pseudo-intellectual? CAPS must be a pseudo-intellectual because only pseudo-intellectuals use that term....

can't say that I found be relegated playing nice football and being "too good to go down" particularly entertaining. I don't look back and think - "what a great season".

of course we all want both but you can't always have that. and the record books don't say " played lovely football that season".

You don't mean hearts-in-mouths, two scrappy games then an entertaining last match and finding out in the last five minutes that we're staying up because our rivals lost and are going down? Pitch invasion, rioutious celebrations and "what a great side we are-roll on next season, we'll show em" etc etc etc? I'll take the points anytime to all that.
