Oh, and The Smiths don't have as much talent as this Captain Jack fellow.
The Smiths ARE shite though... just an Eighties equivalent of The Doors... an average guitar band fronted by a faux tortured soul with a fistful of 6th Form poetry...
Vastly overating them, in my view.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!!! How did that become my quote?

Note to Gimmers:

I'm not sure I've ever mentioned this to you before but if you want to hear the work of a genuinely tortured soul, have a listen to the music of Ivan Rebrov. Got his album in Andy's Records for about 50p 15 years ago. Best money I ever spent.

I think I made it your quote by being a luddite. Still, when I noticed this morning, it made me smirk, so I left it!

I think it can also be spelt Ivan Rebroff, depending on where you're looking. I miss that album. Had it on vinyl and over the years it has grown legs and walked.

Also, look at the works of Klaus Wunderlich. A great man who played contemporary classics on his Wurlitzer organ until he sadly perished a few years back. His movie soundtrack medleys are works of pure genius.

You may (or may not) be thrilled to know that Klaus did a psychedelic hammond LP which fetches decent money at record fairs and the like... naturally, he soon turned his back on all that and went on to make a thousand more bossa nova/oompah LPs.

You should check out the genius of Heino. He has the wrongest eyeballs in the business.

Seriously, shut the feck up or I will hurt you.

Morrissey and the Smiths define a generation, I dare you to find a better English band ever, and if you propose the Stones or the Beatles I'll actually kill you.

Balls

The Kinks are a pub band made good, they are actually described as 'dog shit' in the OED.

You're just making yourself out to be a clueless penis, now Batty. Draw up a list of Britain's greatest songwriters and then read the 'Greatest Influence' bit. Any worth their salt will, of course, quote Ray Davies. Oh, by the way, the lead singer in a band that I used to play in also sang in the same band as Andy Rourke. Get that? And I'd be the first to say that I'm pretty shit!

Andy Rourke is still an excellent musician, despite the court cases v Marr and Morrissey, I just feel that Ray Davies is terribly overrated.

Rourke and Joyce are often found supporting various up and coming North Western musicians, and do a superb job - especially the anti-cancer charity gig they staged in early 2006.

Hahaha!

Well... okay... Morrissey/The Smiths didn't define a generation, they merely soundtracked the teenage years of a bunch of bedroom door slammers and wrist slitters. They also managed to exist in a time (namely the 80s) where there was no other guitar bands about... which made them more popular than deserved. Much like Ashley Cole at present. He's by no means a great left back, but he currently finds himself in the position of being the only half decent English LB around...

Ok, so you want better English bands?

The Pretty Things, Pink Floyd (Syd era), Buzzcocks, Tomorrow, The Kinks, John Renbourne, Nick Drake, The Fall, Joy Division, The Groundhogs, Led Zep, Pentangle, yes The Beatles (Mozza couldn't write Tomorrow Never Knows if he tried), yes The Stones, Ivor Cutler, Traffic, The Koobas... ad nauseum...

Obviously we'll get nowhere with this as it's all down to personal taste... for example... I bet there are loads of New Order fans out there... and personally, I think they're vastly overrated... and don't set me off about The Jam...
