That horse that my fellow poster on RAOTL tipped up the other week runs again today

Not at Goodwood, but the 5.05 at Redcar has Travelling Band running again.

It's about 12/1 and they reckon it'll be better having had the run a couple of weeks ago after a long lay off. It's been looking good in training, and they've been doing intensive work on it coming out of the stalls, so they are pretty confident.

Not backing it myself, like, but anyway.

West Ham are 5/1 to win this dubious honour, having come top of the league last year. Since last year they have signed Bellamy, Dyer, Parker and will get a full season out of Lucas Neill and Bowyer.

Many Volumes - 3.50 Pontefract

I can't believe Gulf Express is the favourite for this race. Looking at it I'd put Many Volumes at around 4/5 to even money and Gulf Express at around 9/4.

Just looked and Gulf Express the 5/4 fav and Many Volumes at 2/1. Madness.

Gulf Express ran to an RPR of 96 last time, beating Warm Embraces in a pretty weak race. Been raised 6lb for that effort.

Many Volumes finished 2nd behind Kirklees in a conditions race last time, recording an RPR of 111. Kirklees then boosted the form winning a hot listed race yesterday and won a Group 1 in Italy last year. Many Volumes dropping back into handicap company today.

Gulf Express recieves 8lb from Many Volumes in today's race, so even a bare reading of the ratings gives him 13lb of improvement to find today in my book.

Henry Cecil is 2 from 2 in handicaps at Pontefract and Richard Hughes is only going up there for one ride, Many Volumes.

2/1 is massive

Quarter Betting

I’ll leave the first quarter as I think Taylor’s going to win it.

The second quarter intrigues me as it offers a couple of good bets which I’m going to take an interest in. Usually I’d happily side with Terry Jenkins in this instance to go far and back him to win his quarter but his Darts have gone a little awry since Blackpool with his tendency to completely lose the ability to hit a double, he doesn’t offer any value in a talent-filled quarter. There are two bets that interest me in this quarter and they are Peter Manley (best priced at 6/1with Skybet) and Chris Mason (16/1 with Betfred). My reason … well Manley’s game is based on his doubles. He’s a very slow scorer who struggles to churn out 180 after 180 but his strength lies in his doubles and over this format, he could well do some damage and he has the ability to reach the semi finals here for the 5th time. Mason interests me purely because of his form. He can be a very enigmatic character who can experience a meltdown at any minute but a player who’s in his form can‘t be ignored. Mason won the Grand Slam of Darts qualifier last week coming through 7 matches and he reached the semi-finals of Saturday’s Players’ Championships so he’s playing well and with form like that, he’s worth a small punt at 16/1.

The third quarter, for me, won’t be the Barney steamroll that people expect it to be. He faces Van Der Voort in the first round and with the short format and Barney’s occasional slow start, he could well be on the receiving end of an upset. If he does survive that then he’ll face Mervyn King who will be looking to make an impression on the Premier League selectors as he wants a wildcard place so he’s in for two tough opening games. If he does win them both then he’s likely to meet Adrian Lewis and it’s with Lewis (11/2 with Stan James) that my money lies. Lewis showed (finally!) that he can put in a performance when it matters with a simply awesome display against Barney at Blackpool and although he disappointed against Wade in the next round, I’m willing to have my money on Lewis again this week to win his quarter as he continues his bid to win his first major.

The fourth quarter belongs to James Wade (7/4 with Skybet). Bar the first two rounds at Blackpool, his work on the doubles was simply amazing and with him continuing his good form since then (Welsh UK Open Winner and Irish Players’ Championship Finalist), I fully expect him to win this quarter and even mount a serious challenge for the title.

Outright Betting
As mentioned above I think Wade’s going far in this tournament and I’m willing to have a little bit invested in him at 16/1.

I’m not going to do a write up for every match purely as I envisage Part, Taylor and the Jenkins pair to have relatively simple victories so I begin with …

Baxter (4/6) vs. Smith (11/8)
I make this pair tighter than what the bookmakers have. I feel that Baxter’s spurt at the World Matchplay and his win at the Windy City Open will cover up the cracks for what has been a very poor year for Baxter as he has struggled to put together any kind of form. Baxter lost in the 4th round on Saturday and in the 3rd round yesterday, couple this with him going out in the 4th round of the Grand Slam of Darts (GSoD) qualifier; his current form isn’t anything to write home about. Andy Smith is playing ok with him reaching the 5th round of the GSoD qualifier and reaching the quarter finals yesterday. Smith though has failed to show any kind of form on the Television stage due to him struggling over the longer games because of the heat but with this short format, I’m willing to take 11/8 on Smith to spring the first upset (odds wise) of the tournament.

Hamilton (8/11) vs. Mardle (11/8)
I have to say in this match it’s more a case of me going against Hamilton as opposed to siding with Mardle. I’d be opposing Hamilton whoever he had in this match. Hamilton has been absolutely woeful of late and against a player better than McGowan (who won a leg after throwing 3); he’d have been well and truly hammered in Blackpool. His form all year has been shocking with him really struggling to do anything of note and his current form is poor at best despite a 5th round appearance yesterday. He was knocked out in the first round on Saturday and has really struggled to make it past the first few rounds of his last 3 or 4 tournaments. Hamilton’s poor form hasn’t done him any favours in his bid to qualify for the Premier League with the pressure being on Hamilton to reach the latter stages in order to up his prize money total and I feel that this pressure coupled with his horrendous form stand him in poor stead and Mardle will pick him off and I’m willing to back him at 11/8.

Mason (11/8) vs. Osborne (8/11)
As I’ve mentioned above I feel that Mason’s form is too good to ignore at present and as much as I like Osborne, I’ve got to oppose him here. Although Mason’s form is the main reason as to why, I feel that Osborne’s doubles really let him down at both Las Vegas and Blackpool and with this format being all about the doubles, I’m expecting his woes to continue so I’ll be backing Mason at 11/8.

Manley (5/6) vs. Dudbridge (11/10)
This match plays host to my biggest bet of the night and I’m siding with Manley. As I’ve said above, this tournaments favours Manley’s strong doubles game with him being able to get into legs early where as his opponent could throw 5 or 6 Darts before they even begin scoring. Manley won’t waste many Darts in this format and I can’t see what Dudbridge has done (bar beat a very out of sorts Taylor in Vegas) to merit such short odds against Manley and I’m hoping to take advantage of the longer odds on offer than expected for Manley.

Aye, was a two-horse race against that Baddam or whatever it was called, which it had beaten each of the 4 times they'd raced. Didn't know it'd go off as short as 1/4 though, would never have advocated backing it at that price. Madness. Then gets done by a 20/1 shot. Ah well, that's life, eh?

In other news I'm top of the RAOTL tipping contest which is coming to an end at the end of the flat-season. I think I'm going to swerve putting any tips on here, though, as they invariably lose when I do.
