bump...
Reet thought I'd just update this slightly. I've extended my running commitments further, so all in aid of raising money for the British Heart Foundation, I'm now running the following......
9th Sept - Great Yorkshire Run (10k)
30th September - Great North Run (half marathon)
4th Novemeber - ING New York Marathon (Fly out to NY on 31st Oct, return on 7th Nov, just in time for Waffa cup action.)
3 races, 46 miles ( 73 km).
I managed 8.25 miles on Saturday morning down at JJB before heading up to Barnstormers (not bad for a fat bloke eh Caps? BTW who was that young lady??), so I'm feeling quite good about my chances of finishing this lot in reasonable times, if not record-breaking ones. The fact is with my injury record I'm just trying to complete them withot hospitalisation.
I've now got one of those fangled spornsorship websites, so if anyone wishes to sponsor me please PM me and I'll send you a link. My bosses will double your donations and the tax man will give some money back too through GiftAid if you fill in the thingy right.

Run Fat Boy Run
BUMP
an update, particulary for those good enough to sponsor me...
First race down, The Great Yorkshire Run (10k)
Run this morning is very warm conditions through the south yorkshire Himalayas. I had no idea Sheffield was so fecking hilly!!
Anyways, I'd set myself the rather conservative time of 1hr 5mins, and given recent knee trouble and no training for 2 weeks I was thinking that might be ambitious, when I had been running uphill for 2 miles I had my doubts I'd even finish, especially when I realised that I'd set off far far too fast - not starting my stopwatch didn't help. Anyways, I dug deep, gritted my teeth, poured water over my head and kept going. I'm not too proud to admit walking in patches due to the inclines, but finished with a sprint for channel 5's cameras.
Came in at 1hr 00mins and 38 seconds, which shows how much faster than planned I must have been at stages. I'm pleased and gutted, breaking 1hr would have been great but never mind, I've never done any sort of road race before and as those who've met me will atest - I'm hardly built like a distance runner!
Anyway next up newcastle and the Great North Run.

One or two asked how I got on at the Great North Run yesterday, so......
Quite honestly........ a bit poo, had hoped for better but the conditions changed things.
Having travelled up on Saturday to Jawdeeland, I spend a couple of hours in a working mens club watching citeh then went to play golf, where I royally shafted 3 newcastle fans, when they cried about me being a bandit and not entirely honest I replied - that's for nicking Allardyce and faye!
Anyways, for the first time on record the sun came out in jawdeeland on sunday, not good. I started so far back from the start I'd walked half a mile before crossing the line and getting going. I've never run in a race with so many poeple particpating or watching before, they are two big factors. And the sun is one for me too, tending toward gingerness as i do.
To the people of Tyne & Wear - thank you, they turned out in the thousands cheering waving and clapping - you don't know what a difference someone shouting your name out makes when you're at about 11 miles and the pain is kicking in. Not only that but they were there with hoses, sweets, oranges, lollies and ice pops, much needed and much appreciated in that sun.
As for the race, I had set a time of 2hrs 20, so that I can extrapolate that pace throug to the marathon next month - it's what I've been training at. Or maybe not, as I went through mile 1 in 9 mins 40 (1 min 7 secs faster than planned) and thought I was going slowly, thinking I'd slowed down my mile 3 I was 4 mins up on schedule. I knew I had to try and slow down, but it's tough in amongst all those people, I trotted through the first 6.6 miles in 1hr 5 minutes, 5 ahead of schedule.
Second half was tougher, not just due to fatigue but the course too. Got to 9 miles where the trouble I've been having with my knees caught me out and one buckled baddly. This meant I had no choice but to slow down, stopped to see the St Johns ambulance to get them to cut my knee supports off as by then they were just wet and ripping in to me and hobbled off. I have to add at this point from mile 9 onwards the volume of strugglers makes running, even slowly, hard work. Got through mile 10 but then you spend 2 miles running up hill, then you go down a steep hill on to south shields sea front for the final mile and a bit.
Got home in 2.25, but given a stop to sort my bloody ipod out, a wee, and the st johns, I was there or there abouts with my time. Was v grateful of the British Heart Foundation tent at the end, their sandwiches, bananas, sweets, biscuits and tea!
Many people who looked far younger and fitter than me fell by the wayside - literally, you feel most for those who collapse on the final stretch. The heat took its toll on many and getting the right combination of water, sugar and salt was there for all to see.
I missed the bloody TV hi-lights last night as I was stuck on the A1 for hours, if anyone saw runner 30999 with heart runners on his vest and a bright red face - that's be me.
So two down and 1 to go.... gulp.

Nice one Commie. I still feel the same as ever about sponsoring these things, but that doesn't stop me being impressed with all this an athletic feat.
What's the secret to the salt and sugar combo then?
And so you shafted some other golfers on handicap related matters.... no change there then. Perhaps this extra fitness will improve your golf too - you might have heard Woods lecturing on the importance of putting in the miles on the road. At the very least, it might mean that that Nike Dri-Fit gear you wear starts to look acceptable.

cheeky feck*! You just wish you looked as good as me in your golf gear rather than that get-up they have you trotting about in at oxbridge. It has to be said I had one of those days where I was swinging very smoothly and hardly hit a bad shot- though it was taking the piss a bit when I outdrove a bloke, who plays 4 times a week, with my 3 wood. And there was a bit of outcry on the 2nd when I played a wedge in to the green from about 70 yds and spun it back about 5 feet.
the water, salt sugar thing is that if you just drink water then you're fecked. You lose salt in your sweat and you will not be well at all with just water intake - one guy died at this year's london marathon because of it.
If isotonic drinks are there then I try to do 2 of them to 1 of water.
I would also add that the leading brand of sports drinks is one to be wary of, it's ok for one bottle pre race as fuel and maybe one during the race but they do tend to cause you to lose water through bad guts.
I'm also trying these carbo gels, which taste like shit but it's an easy way to get the energy while running. Carb loading the day before is easy, though beer, chips and pizza isn't what you'll find in any text book

Well done, Commie.
I've done a couple of 10k's recently and am convinced that if I try a half marathon it'll kill me as I can't slow my pace. As soon as I see someone go past me I'm kicking in like it's a 400m sprint!
I have a race in Letchworth on Sunday which is apparently very flat so I'm hoping for a season's PB (about 45 mins.)
Keep it up and good luck for the big one.

Afraid you're talking in foreign tongues with all this bicarbonate of soda stuff Commie. A lot of running is mind-shut and keep putting one foot in front of the other, but I'm sure you'll do it so good luck and keep focussed. The honour of TW is at stake.

well chaps, one day before I head off to the Big Banana and the Umpire State Building. It'll be interesting to see if Central Park is as good as the one in Bolton used to be.
The Don was asking how things were, well frankly not great. My training has been minimal for the last few weeks due to a bit of bad health that the doc seems a bit lost about - then again ear ache confused him. Then again he might have been speaking sense but he has a rather strong Nigerian accent that I struggle to comprehend. Suffice to say I've given up any thought of achieving a certain time, it's all about just completing the thing now, which is disappointig on a personal level but the fact is there's still £5,000 on its way to the British Heart Foundation.
whatever happens, I'm a stone or so lighter, my knees are fecked and I'm considerably poorer for all this malarky - but I've entered 3 10k races and at least one half marathon next year, so at least some of the training will have to continue. Let's just hope BUPA fix my knees quickly!
