Received an e-mail informing me that I have a new private message, but there aren't any new messages in inbox - any ideas? :?

Probably someone sending you a PM and then deleting it before you'd read it, which you can do if it's still in the outbox.

I think you need to make sure he's not logged on before attempting it...
