All this fuss about a few hangovers is a bit OTT, isn't it?

Eh? Oh, sorry, thought they said Wine Flu.

Back to seriousness:

30m vaccinations? Chances are there'll end up being more deaths as a reaction to thaose than from Swine flu.

That you'll only take it seriously when Western lives are involved. That's what you said, dress it up all you like.

PROFESSOR JOHN OXFORD, VIROLOGY EXPERT AT BARTS AND THE LONDON

If the avian flu H5N1 virus had spread from human to human like this then I would be extremely worried. It would be top of my Richter scale.

But this swine flu worries me less because as a population we have a basic immunity to H1N1. Outside of Mexico there have been no deaths, so it doesn't seem so aggressive.

And not only are we coming up to the summer, which makes it less likely for these viruses to spread as well, but Britain has enough antiviral drugs for half of the population.

So we should not panic in any way. This does not look as though it is going to be a virus that sweeps the world and causes huge mortality.
I don't think anyone is in a rush to disagree with your point media sensationalism is a big point to bear in mind. Mself, Bobo, Monty, Worthy and Bruce seem to have all read your post and thought it seemed out of character. Your subsequent posts have made clear it was only the wording that did this. It's not a big deal, it's the interent and tone gets lost and at some point everyone comes across differently to how they mean, you just seemed to get dead defensive about it. Bloody hell, victim culture :D (Joooooohooooooooke)

We're all doooomed, Mr Mainwaring....

What I thinks bloody hilarious about this sh*t is that recieved medical wisdom(aka some bloke on 5Live) appears to be that the stronger your immune system, the more f*cked your likely to be - your body 'turns' on itself (consult a medical dictionary to decipher the jargon, folks).

So in short, be old, very young, a heavy smoker, or always be pulling sickies and you'll be sound. And all you pious b*stards who go on about running and staying healthy and working hard and sh*t are all going to die. It'll be like shameless when you're gone. Only Better.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Thats what happened in 1918 LK. And its possible that is why the younger healthy people have so far been the ones to die in Mexico.

However, what is being seen in the USA and elsewhere is that the virus is more mild and not causing the immune system to overreact in such a way.

It could be this is due to the fact that treatment in the US is more rapid, and they have bigger stockpiles of drugs to hand than Mexico, or it could be that there is a secondary virus passing round Mexico that is hitting on the back of the swine flu and compromising weakened immune systems.

One thing to note is that if this is a repeat of the 1918 situation (and it may well not be based on evidence so far) that basically anyone aged 20-40 needs to worry and given that our general health is better than in 1918, being a bit overweight, or a heavy smoker is not enough to save you I'm afraid!

I will treat it as a serious threat to my own life when people outside of Mexico City start dying. Seeing as I've not been to Mexico, and those who have (from some 10 or so countries round the world now) and have contracted it haven't died, I'm struggling to see why I should be seriously worried about the prospect of this fatal flu.

If you want to think that I don't give two shiny shites about anyone other than myself then that's your prerogative. You're wrong, but you're entitled to be.

Oh, and I hope everyone is looking forward to receiving their leaflet through their door about how not to die from swine flu. That's a good use of taxpayers money and not at all scaremongering and pointless.

As much as I can't stand the fuss made 20 years on from Hillsbrough, I really don't think Blurred deserves the comments he's getting.

I think his point is that so far, the deaths are isolated to one place, so the worry need not be that great for us in the UK right now, or at least till we understand what is going on.

Don't think he is trying to say that those deaths are meaningless.

No, not at all. I said there was no reason for panic in the Western world until deaths started occurring in places other than Mexico, not that the lives lost in Mexico were less worthy than our own. I thought that was quite clear by the tone of my comments, that it was the hysteria and pandemic warnings that I was railing against, not the loss of life.

It was crystal clear, sorry I think others are just being pillocks!

The Banner Headline on BBC News just now?

SWINE FLU OUTBREAK -12 year old girl and 2 adults confirmed cases.

Does that mean we'll have a national emergency every time a few kids get chickenpox at a school?

At this point I think we have all accepted the clarifications. I apologize for throwing Hillsborough into the mix - I was trying to point out we should be concerned about all loss of life and not be selective. I read blurred's original post incorrectly - or he did not phrase it well - take your pick.
