My friends and I have a conspiracy theory that the likes of O2, Vodafone et al have joke writers employed to write and start these jokes when stuff like this happens and then sit back and watch them spread with ££££'s in their eyes.TANGODANCER wrote:Doesn't take long, does it? Just had this sent:
Bored on your way to work on the bus, tube or train? Pretend you're on the phone and talk about your four weeks tour of Mexico. Hang up then sneeze loudly!.

There is bugger all to worry about...
153 deaths in Mexico (of which only 7 are confirmed as H1N1 swine flu thus far), and the 1 in Texas are fairly typical for any break out of flu, swine or otherwise!
I'm sure I've seen somewhere that general Influenza A kill about 36,000 in the states each year. Until the numbers drastically surpass that I for one will remain not in the least concerned!
To quote my mother on the current hjysteria in bolton nhs with every hypochondriac comes out of the woodwork....

FIBMS = Fellow of the Institue of BioMedical Scientists so she knows what she is talking about more than most of the numptys who appear in the red-tops talking about it...The Mother (MSc FIBMS) wrote:...yes we are being swamped with people worrying about breathing, and please bear in mind that our hospital is next to a pig farm, and yes I've heard all the pig jokes.
Everyone is fine, as yet there has been no confirmed cases in England. The cases confirmed in Scotland are all recovering nicely, no deaths or near deaths. I know people have died in Mexico but it is classed as a 3rd world country so its not surprising there has been deaths but I think if you look at their death rate during the normal flu season it would be the same if not more.
Have a good holiday, I think you're safe, so far its only hit Texas and possibly Oregon but as you know the Americans do and get everything bigger and better than us.

"Arsenal's Mexican striker Carlos Vela was ordered to stay away from training on Monday while doctor's carried out tests on him for swine flu. The Gunners were worried after Vela had friends from his homeland visit him at the weekend but the 20-year-old was given the all-clear"
It's happening.

To return (if one dares) to the main thread - there is a fairly interesting article on swine flu and the epidemic versus pandemic question.

How many people on the planet? How many of them died of cancer, Aids, heart disease, hunger, or from wars yesterday?
I have a sneaking suspicion we're getting carried away, and an even sneakier suspicion that the governments of the world who lead us into the financial abyss are seeing this as, I think the phrase goes, "a good day to bury bad news"?
Keeps us all on our toes (or trotters etc).

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

I've not come across anyone in our hospital yet scared of having the piggy flu. It can't be long though.
And as LK suggests, the numbers are hugely insignificant compared to other diseases. More people in the Liverpool area will have died from heart disease this week compared to the global effects of this. The worry is however that it has cropped up almost overnight and has the potential to be huge. The warnings are fair enough for precaution but the probability of it ever becoming a remotely significant disease are low.
