There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

I'd give you some names but I'd be shouted down here, and Megson apparently isn't interested in buying anyone outside of the Championship. Could have had Bocanegra - captain of the USA, 4 years EPL experience - for free last year. Instead we spent 2 mil on Shittu.
look at it another way- fulham got shut , then qualified for europe.

There are some players that can do a job. No real superstars, but I am not sure how suited they are to the English game. My favorite American and still is really....Brian McBride. Awesome player.

The goalies are the strength of the program in terms of playing abroad. I suppose it's a team full of low risk high reward players. With the exception of donovan who at times has an arrogance about him I don't like. Good player, just not great.

A fantastic win. I'm most pleased because it gives the US a little respect.

Highlights. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything as satisfying as $4 million Clint Dempsey outsmarting €27 million girly-man Sergio Ramos.

Look at it another way: Rennes got him for free and made it to the final of the Coupe de France. Spending £2 million on a reserve center back of Shittu's quality is a poor way to spend money.

Ah yes. France.

The league in which Gerald Cid was considered a rising young star.

One of the small comforts of seeing Spain lose is when Real Madrid players are shown up

I'm guessing the only person who considered Gerald Cid a "rising star" was whoever handed Craig Allardyce a sack of money with a dollar sign on it.

Allegedly.

And Jean Alain Boumsong continues to make a living.

I've not seen more than the final 15 minutes of tonight's semi final between South Africa and Brazil. Dani Alves, who's just taken advantage of a questionably-positioned goalkeeper on a free kick, was wearing polo neck-cum-scarf type doohickey. I know it's the South African winter and all that, but is it really that cold in Joburg this time of year? When was the last time a World Cup took place in a cold climate?

There was talk of a hard frost earlier in the day. Not very Wilbur Smith, but there you go.

Game wasn't spectacular and RSA gave us good as they got. That one free kick was all there was between them. RSA defended well; Fabiola, Robinho and Kaka looked sharp enough but got little change. Peinar played well for RSA.

Alves scored a great goal and then was booked for celebrating. Absolute madness.

It wasn't especially great, it was basically the only place the ball was going as Boothe was blocking the other post. Goalie really should have got it. As for the celebration he should be booked, thats the rule and thats what they should do.

Apparently its because he revealed a tattoo on his chest that says "Daniel" and apparently a FIFA directive says you are not allowed to transmit any written messages to the cameras or crowd.

Rules are rules, if players break them then thats what they should get. Personally having played football I never understood why the hell you need to take your top off to celebrate! A good ol' fist pumping jump in the air is ample enough for me.

What he said. The rule was brought in to stop any political or what could be construed as offensive message being broadcast. Just because Alves didn't doesn't mean that it's a crazy enforcement of the rules.

Well, it's heartbreaking, but I'm still proud of the team. They gave it everything they had and nearly surprised everyone.

I'll never understand what Bradley was playing at though. We're up 2-0 at HT, but we're getting torn apart by Maicon on the right. So, he waits until they equalize to bring on Bornstein, a defensive left-sided player, for a striker. That and the fact that Howard was still booming the goal kicks straight up the field even though every one came straight back . . . what might have been . . .

Looked to me like Brazil wanted to test themselves, so gave the US a start

In fact, I'd be interested to check out the betting patterns

I didn't watch the final, but well done U.S. of A..

I did though watch the third place play-off (S.Af v Spain) which was a scrappy affair, errors galore and gave the impression at times that the players really didn't want to be there. The last fifteen minutes or so were interesting - once the hosts had snaffled one. Two from the Spanish in the space of two minutes and a marvelous free kick seconds from the whistle to give S.Af. the chance offered by the extra half hour.

It was not to be: Spain 3 - 2 S.Af.

I believe what you meant to say was, "wow, I guess I WAS being a jackass all these years and there actually IS some talent in the US team."
