Oh Evra . . . your little pansy ways just about cost your team the game. Fine, it was a foul, but he was sure healthy enough to bitch at the referee immediately after the goal. I have to say, kudos to Chelsea for playing on. Rooney didn't see fit to kick the ball out when Evra was down so Chelsea were under no obligation to do so.
As for Foster . . . yikes. I'd have to say Green is looking the best choice after James . . . remember that Green won't have to deal with Matty Taylor's freekicks in international games.

There are a lot of young English goalkeepers who have suffered from what I'd call Richard Wright Syndrome - been bigged up and have shown a lot of promise when being peppered at, only to found wanting when given the opportunity to show their wares on a bigger stage.
Back when Richard Wright was getting talked up, there were three 'young English keepers' tipped to make it big, Wright, Paul Robinson, and who was the other one. I can't get Stuart Taylor out of my head, but I don't think it was him, surely?KeeeeeeeBaaaaaaab wrote:But he will have to deal with crosses he doesn't have any right to come for, yet still does.H. Chris Kirkland was ripping up trees at Coventry around Wright's time, wasn't he?Prufrock wrote:Back when Richard Wright was getting talked up, there were three 'young English keepers' tipped to make it big, Wright, Paul Robinson, and who was the other one. I thought Taylor arrived on the scene a little after Robinson, who arrived just after Wright. A quick perusal of Soccerbase would confirm it, but I can't be arsed. Sorry, mate.
Wright was impressing all and sundry at Ipswich, and then he went and shanked it at Everton. Injury didn't help, but neither did his ability. Etched in my mind was his calamitous display against Luxembourg during a friendly (I think it was a warm up for a major tournament, probably WC 1998 - I say that because I remember watching it in the Blue Boar in Bolton, and I moved to London in 1999). Taylor's distribution was brilliant, although I don't remember anything else about him. I reckon he might have been a decent shot-stopper, though.
The other "bright young thing" I can think of from back then was Tony Warner, who was understudy to James at Liverpool before the inevitable slide towards obscurity, although he managed to stem that as far as Millwall.
Kirkland is the only one I can think of too, though for some reason it doesn't click in my head. That's kind to Wright to say he ballsed it up at Everton, coz he was bloody awful at Arsenal before that. I can't really remember how good any of them were back then, being only about 11 myself, but I do remember Tony Warner being a proper Grade A* cnut.KeeeeeeeBaaaaaaab wrote:Chris Kirkland was ripping up trees at Coventry around Wright's time, wasn't he?Prufrock wrote:Back when Richard Wright was getting talked up, there were three 'young English keepers' tipped to make it big, Wright, Paul Robinson, and who was the other one. I have to say, HP, that if Ballack had taken Matty Taylor out in the same way then there wouldn't have been many on here saying "Get up, Taylor, you puff".H. Pedersen wrote:Oh Evra . . . your little pansy ways just about cost your team the game.
I actually have a level of admiration for the way that Evra went toe to toe with Cyril a couple of years ago at our place and still put in an excellent performance. Of course, I now expect to be burned in my bed tonight for saying that but I hold nothing against Man U as a club, only against the tossers who never make any attempt to go but spend all of their time telling me just how good they are and how shit we are!

I really do think this is an irresponsible attitude for a bolton wanderers supporter to display. Do a bit of work, give that prejudice a polish and shine. Soon you'll feel proud to own it.Bruce Rioja wrote:I have to say, HP, that if Ballack had taken Matty Taylor out in the same way then there wouldn't have been many on here saying "Get up, Taylor, you puff".H. I've spent a lifetime following us up and down the country through every division, and into Europe from Mansfield to Marseille. All I want to see is for us to do as well as we can. We've both seen how badly we can do. I know, and you know, and I know that you know that we both know exactly where I'm coming from.

There's no doubt it was a foul. Man Utd fans have a right to feel hard done by. Still, it wasn't nearly as bad as he made it out to be, as evidenced by the fact that his own player chose not to kick it out. Once he saw the foul wouldn't be called and that Rooney was playing on, he should have tried to get up and get back.Bruce Rioja wrote:I have to say, HP, that if Ballack had taken Matty Taylor out in the same way then there wouldn't have been many on here saying "Get up, Taylor, you puff".H. Green has been very consistant over the last two seasons for West Ham.Bruce Rioja wrote:Is a thread in itself. Can anyone name me one single decent English keeper that's good to take over from James, who is himself error-prone?Bruno wrote: PS - Foster for England? Oh dear

Whilst I'm not of the view that Robert Green is the best option, how you can take one moment in isolation and use it as evidence of someone being "consistently shit"?Bruno wrote:Consistently shit.Soldier_Of_The_White_Army wrote:Green has been very consistant over the last two seasons for West Ham.Bruce Rioja wrote:Is a thread in itself. Nicky Weaver was another one who was tipped for big things at the time.Prufrock wrote: Back when Richard Wright was getting talked up, there were three 'young English keepers' tipped to make it big, Wright, Paul Robinson, and who was the other one. He did well for City in the lower divisions and was a regular for the England U21s but was even more injury prone than Kirkland.
Don't remember him playing much in the Prem.

I'm fairly sure, although I could be wildly wrong, that Weaver's had the Achilles tendon of a dead bloke placed into his bad knee where it's playing the part of his ACL. Something like that anyway.
My abiding memory of Weaver is when we played City at home in the 2nd Division (or whatever it is) and he single-handedly stopped us from scoring about 15. In the meantime Terry Cooke pranced off through our entire team and hit an absolute beauty past Branny from fully 35 yards.

Bloody hell. Forgot about him, you know. You remember when Keegan was in charge of City, and there were certain players and officials bemoaning City's "drinking culture" towards the end of Keegan's tenure? Weaver was one of the first names on certain ITK lips as far as crawling out of pubs at 3am on a Saturday morning were concerned. He put a LOT of weight on as soon as he became well known. And the....Warnerville.Bruce Rioja wrote:Isn't he just, because you (you tw*t) have had it bugging me all day too!Prufrock wrote:You sir, are a star.
