I have no idea.
As far as I can see Shittu was holding all the cards. We'd given him a good contract (20k a week or whatever) and we're letting him talk openly to whoever he wanted. He even turned down similar money to what he was on here from Turkey.
The idea that (in your words) he'd suddenly decide to accept less than four months worth of wages and piss off, would make him something of a saint. Or an idiot.

He would be rotting in the reserves if he stayed though. You are basing your thoughts on the finance aspect only.Tombwfc wrote:I have no idea.

Also why would we pay the remainder of his contract up in full in one hit rather than keep him and spread the payments over 9 months?
A deal will have been done to suit all parties.
On the other hand he gets a (presumably fairly large) lump sum and the immediate freedom to go and seek employment somewhere else. If he gets signed up in the next couple of months then he still gains financially and gets first team football. That makes it a good deal for him, whilst we don't have to pay out on his full contract. Everyone wins/Tombwfc wrote:I have no idea.

Are there any financial bonuses to a lower lump sum pay off, compared with having your monthly wage? i.e. the increases in January to VAT, NI and the like - does he get more by being paid off now, and will it cost BWFC less?Tombwfc wrote:I have no idea.

There must be some reason, as its better to have him here than cost us the same getting rid I would have thought. But like you say why would he accept a cut?
He did ok when he played I thought...we never got to see him come on up front to cause havoc late on either, which I thought was one of Megsons plans. Certainly leaves with no disrespect from me.
It seems he has a few irons in the fire.....

Former Bolton defender Danny Shittu is weighing up a number of offers as he looks to find a new club.
The Nigeria international left Bolton earlier this week after cancelling his contract by mutual consent.
Shittu found himself out of favour over the last year and did not feature in the first team last season.
A number of clubs are thought to be monitoring Shittu's situation after he impressed during the World Cup with Nigeria.
Celtic are rumoured to be tracking the former Watford man as Neil Lennon considers his defensive options, while clubs in France, Turkey and the Middle East are all believed to interested in the central defender
The 30-year-old feels he had no choice but to quit Bolton as he wants to be playing on a regular basis and he is now considering his options.
"I believe quitting Bolton was the right step to take as I didn't have options to play at Bolton," Shittu told skysports.com.
"I wish the club all the best in the future and now I have to find myself a new club.
"I am now reviewing my options and there are quite a few sides interested in me from Europe and the Middle East.
"Hopefully I can announce where my future lies shortly after I return from international duty."

But Bungle is also correct in what he is saying.. Let's say he had £1Million pounds left on his contract. Why would we then give that Million to just feck off somewhere else? We may aswell get some use out of him if we're not saving any money!BWFC_Insane wrote:Shittu was available on a free before we released him.
So his chances of employment are unaltered unless he himself accepts a lower salary.
Tom is right, its highly unlikely we have paid him significantly less than was on his contract.

Apart from the fact that if he signs for someone tomorrow he gets a cash lump sum AND a salary.BWFC_Insane wrote:Shittu was available on a free before we released him.

Thats true as is Bungles post below. I imagine the pay-off is probably mildly shy of what his contract was worth. A small saving for us and he gets to go elsewhere.boltonboris wrote:But Bungle is also correct in what he is saying.. Let's say he had £1Million pounds left on his contract. But if we only gave him say £500,000 and then he finds a club willing to pay him £10,000 a week for a year then he still gets £1 million so he's happy. We only pay half of what we were contracted to pay, so we're happy. The club gets a decent defender on not particularly expensive wages so they're happy - everybody wins!
Get him signed!cophilie wrote:boltonboris wrote:But Bungle is also correct in what he is saying.. Let's say he had £1Million pounds left on his contract. Personally i would of kept him as a squad player, if where protecting a lead and sitting deep (counter attacking) theres nobody better to dominate our box defensivly from airstrikes. Against teams like Stoke and Blackburn he would be a great asset. He wouldnt play many games but would be a massive impact player.

Don't we already have Knight for that? I saw how Shittu got on against Northampton, and he was out of his depth even then.Sir Nut wrote:Personally i would of kept him as a squad player, if where protecting a lead and sitting deep (counter attacking) theres nobody better to dominate our box defensivly from airstrikes. May the bridges I burn light your way
i think you're missing SirNut's point, Bruce. Shittu's a keeper - cos Megson bought him.... one day we'll make a MASSIVE profit on him* from Megson's policy to buy young with potential and sell at a huge profit and benefit the club long term. like Rasiak...Bruce Rioja wrote:Don't we already have Knight for that? And before you say, 'That's not what I said'.. Don't bother, because it's exactly that
