Tal Ben Haim has to be one of the best wonderflips. Cost so little and then came good. Granted he's not done very good elsewhere but for us he was one of the better players we've signed on a free. Jaidi's another shout for a good player on very little.

Jaidi IIRC, cost us £1.5m and he couldn't defend for toffees

When my Brummie mate asked me what they were getting, I told him "Games that'll finish at least 1-1, with Jaidi having a hand in it at both ends".

What I never 'got' was that he was spotted by us man-marking Okocha at the African Nations

If he had the discipline to do that, wtf went wrong

No idea, Fella. What I do remember though was Allardyce claiming that "At last he'd found a centre half in his own mould", like that was a good thing!

Surely Alan Thompson should be in there as well? £250, 000 and sold to Villa for £4.5m?

To a lesser extent Sasa, he always said it was one of the biggest mistakes of his career leaving Wanderers, that and dancing like MC Hammer

Oh how I sobbed the day that happened.
Pfffft.

I'd just like to reiterate my choice of England Centre Forward Kevin Davies.

Mark Fish
Gudni Bergsson
Ricardo Gardner (fair do's it was a week, but still....)

But I get the sentiment of your post - the first big name foreigner coming in, N'Gotty notwithstanding.

To be fair, there isn't many others before Youri you could thijnk of.
