Or you could call social engineering giving everyone an equal and fair chance in life. To paraphrase a well-known signature, I'd rather be a Liberal do-gooder than be you.

Oh, and Harriet Harman didn't run for the Labour Leadership. But it's easy twisting facts to knee jerk reactionary types like you. Now toddle off to read your Daily Mail.
I cannot see where I said she actually did run after she found out her chance was slim or zero and slim had left town, can you?

What gives you the right to decide where I spend money or what I contribute to? You want a commie state move to China.
Which country in the world that collects taxes gives you the right to say what your money is or isn't spent on.

And given a tax system how do you decide? Road users want road repairs. Presumably non road users do not care much.

People with kids want child tax credits etc, those without probably don't care.

The elderly want looking after, those that are not elderly may not be that bothered.

So in short wherever you go, whatever you do, there's always someone to spend your money for you.

That could even be a song.

Ah well, you see maybe somebody should teach everyone that a Welfare State should be for everybody, and everybody should care about everybody else. If I remember, Jesus tried it once.

Are you saying you don't agree with stop and search?

All governments are control freaks, just in different ways. I'm under no illusions about Labour, they weren't perfect. But lets face it we're where we are and pretty much anyone is preferable to the current lot who have already told so many lies and broken so many promises its unreal. I also think they will protect their rich fat cat friends (as they already are doing) and will do everything they can to crush what was a very successful NHS under Labour as well as rip away at the very fabric of the countries public services. Which you might not care about but I very firmly do.

Calais approach roads..

I have drive through Calais many times - but never at 3am..

last night it was raining quite hard - oncoming lorries caused quite a glare as the wipers never quite managed to find an appropriate speed to both enable vision AND not make that irritating squeaking sound against the winsdscreen...

anyway - the wipers are not the thing - though i reserve the right to be cross about them another day soon!

the calais ferry port approach roads - no street lights - normally fine, in fact, I prefer my motorways unlit - like the big long section of the M20 leading to and from Dover on the other side (excellent cats-eye coverage!)...

BUT - if you then decide not to use cats-eyes (as they seem to have decided in Calais) - then a dark, rainy night with approaching lorry headlight-glare and a little bit of fog makes the road ahead pretty much invisible and the 130kph speed limit a little redundant!

If I had the energy, I'd be cross about this...

the stupid use of the word "selected" or "select" in advertising

"We've cut the prices of 100 selected products" for instance... what does the word "selected" add?

New Labour allowed the banks to carry on unregulated, and continued to try to privatise anything that wasn't nailed down. That is not very socialist. New Labour brought in oppressive anti-terror laws and poorly thought out stop and search powers and managed to allow the conservatives to take the lead on civil liberties. That is not very liberal. New Labour were more socialist and liberal than you, but then that is an 'accusation' that could be levelled at Sarah Palin.....

Originally it was going to be "Shit".

As in "we couldn't sell this shit for love nor money, but we're hoping with a few price cuts you'll think them a bargain"

But then those fancy dan sales and marketing people realised that telling the truth won't always get you what you want. Clever that.

The truth of the matter is that the retailer hasn't cut the price of anything, they've simply forced the supplier into it.

furniture shops on telly (as they are the major culprits) saying stuff like..

"This cream leather sofa, only five nine nine."

when they should be saying..

"This cream leather sofa, only five hundred and ninety-nine pounds."

(leaving aside the appropriateness of the "only" and the absence of a verb)

Aye, the favourite word of kids when you tell them a "only 399" laptop is beyond their parents pockets.
