It's very good. If you like it, then I recommend a similar French film called 'Anything for Her'.General Mannerheim wrote:I thought it were decent!Bruce Rioja wrote:Coco Before Chanel? How the bleedin' Dickens has that ended up on my list? Actually, I think I know!![]()
Lovefilm sent me a film today too; 'Tell no one' on bluray.

Aye - to be fair, a few people at work have watched it and enjoyed it. I'll let you know how I get on.jmjhb wrote:It's very good. Just sitting down to watch The Usual Suspects. Somehow never seen before!

The phrase comes from 'Casablanca' of course - a truly great film...Prufrock wrote:Just sitting down to watch The Usual Suspects. Somehow never seen before!

I'm not one for hiding an opinion, but i'll be honest here. I think Casablanca is a terrible film, overhyped beyond all belief. Its just typical WWII propaganda stuff to prepare us for the conquest of North Africa, and the re-absorption of Vichy French forces. And stuff.
Its not that I'm bothered or owt.
As for the Usual Suspects. Decent film, nice idea.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

You won't be surprised that I disagree - and am struggling to see how you could develop such a bizarre interpretation of the film...Lord Kangana wrote:I'm not one for hiding an opinion, but i'll be honest here. No, It's just regarded by many as a love story set amidst that period. When it was made films didn't really aim at intellectual interpretation, just goodies and baddies a likeable hero and a good-looking woman. They don't make villains like Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre anymore.Lord Kangana wrote:I'm not one for hiding an opinion, but i'll be honest here. It should probably been a more objective piece, 3 years into a war, trying to explain how hard it was to be a collaborator and explaining the issues that faced such people.TANGODANCER wrote:No, It's just regarded by many as a love story set amidst that period. Re: What are you watching tonight?
i watched Wajda's Danton tonight - partly because he's been current because of Katyn and partly because I felt ambiguous about it 20+ years ago when I first saw it, but thought it had some excellent stuff in it.
Was glad to see it again - and partner was for first time. (French, subtitles, btw). I think it indulges Depardieu - never knowingly under-the-top - far too much but still has important things to say about revolutionary hopes and betrayals. Danton is the revolutionary trying to end the bloodshed, his antagonist, Robespierre, the revolutionary determined to protect the revolution with the aid of the guillotine. Depardieu really does mess it up, but it still held me.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
It is a committedly political film in which two of the love triangle are involved actively in opposition/resistance to Nazism, and the third is a cynic about his own desires to resist but makes the necessary political sacrifice in the end.TANGODANCER wrote:No, It's just regarded by many as a love story set amidst that period. The love story is more convincing and resonant than the politics, for sure, but they are mutually dependent.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
The propoganda topic is hardly surprising since it was released in 1942 about totally current ehappenings, with the makers scrambling to keep up with almost daily events, but take the woman out and you have no story worth mentioning.William the White wrote:It is a committedly political film in which two of the love triangle are involved actively in opposition/resistance to Nazism, and the third is a cynic about his own desires to resist but makes the necessary political sacrifice in the end.TANGODANCER wrote:

Well, no - since it's about a love triangle... Which, you will have noticed I think is more powerful and resonant than the politics... Take the politics out and you don't have Casablanca. It's absurd to try and deny their mutual interdependence...

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Exactly, but I doubt it would have been made at all without said love triangle, which is the key to why Bogart's character bothers to be involved in the plot, which was my point. It's a romantic drama. I don't see us as arguing about anything.William the White wrote:TANGODANCER wrote:

Any film that has a zombie in it being bashed with the top of a loo cystern is good for me

My dog (proper 57) had his anal glands emptied once and yes the smell is something to behold!!
