This gives much more detail behind the club finances than I've read elsewhere and demonstrates just how much we're in debt (in every interpretation of the word!) to Mr Edwin Davies. I just hope he's got loads more of the folding stuff that he doesn't need his £83m back anytime soon

I don't want to scare anyone, but I've heard of a website running an in-depth report on our finances. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Maybe Eddie has given Gartside a cut off point for the cash?

Does ED have kids or anyone to inherit off him? As I see it, we'll never pay this money back ever, so I hope he writes it off. Or we're screwed. Properly.

Well, the team has assets - stadium, hotel, players under contract, etc. - which would offset the balance sheet to a degree. Blackburn sold for 43 million with no hotel. Plus Eddie is getting higher interest than he would elsewhere. However, we do need to cut down on the current deficit and increase crowds.

As far as I can see, Riga wasn't registered as one of our 24 registered players over the age of 21.

So that probably sorts that one out.

I would worry about cutting some of the others and not replacing them, given the strength of our remaining under 21 players - Al Habs is also on our list of 24.

So looking shunting the ones you've mentioned, on our bench, we'd end up with:

Bogdan
Blake
Mavis
Klasnic
Petrov
Steinsson
Moreno/Alonso

Minute we get some injuries, that bench is going to start looking fairly thin.

Replace with a couple of frees with lower contracts - I bet the new financial realities are even hitting the football world, elevate a couple of kids like Ward and Connolly, and get Owen back on the books just in case. Job done.

In all seriousness, we're just going to have to risk having a smaller squad.

Wouldn't disagree with that approach - just pointing to the fact that we won't (probably) save a full £6/7m.. :-)

As I say, if we can recoup £3m or so for Al Habsi it'll look healthier than that.

And, despite it being described as hatred, I still maintain that which I said in summer - a player like Taylor should be saleable at £3m+. We can't afford to have two for every position like Megson wanted, perhaps we could sustain this by getting in loanees, promoting youngsters, and having more Ricketts/Steinsson/Blake players in the squad? That is to say players who can cover a number of positions. Can't do that with every player (Klasnic and CYL are worthy of their luxury status for me) but I bet we can with plenty.

Taylor is in the team at the minute - should we be selling Petrov?

If you look at the books, it not quite "we can't afford two for every position", we can't afford most of the ones for every position.

We've been pretty lucky with injuries to our first 11 players this year so far, but it would only take a couple to start making it all look a whole lot different. 7 have been ever present. Rickett's deputised well for Cahill - Bogdan did ok for Jussi. We've still had 19 players that have been used.

You still have to ask yourself whether Loanees/Youngsters would be any improvement on a couple of them

But if they were no worse, but cheaper? Surely thats what we're after?

As for Petrov, i doubt he has resale value so soon after getting him for free. Taylor did. That was the reasoning

I agree no worse but cheaper is fine.

I would be surprised if a couple of the ones on your list were on significant money - I don't for one minute believe they're all on a million per year.

Yeah, I'm not sure who we're going to get that's going to save us any significant money. Tamir was signed for about £4.50, nobody's telling me he's on 20-30k a week.

It's all right saying 'promote youngsters', which youngsters? Ours? The hottest central midfield prospects to come through our Academy in years are playing for St Mirren and Blackpool reserves respectively.

Sometimes you take things far too literally.

We've got sufficient first team midfielders to see us through bar something like the plague sweeping through the club. Does having Tamir Cohen as 9th choice midfielder really matter instead of one of the kids?

And he will be on more money than one of the kids. And he's rubbish. So's Riga. Whats the point of having them? Thats not promoting the kids to the first team, its ridding our squad of unnecessary, more expensive than needs be shite.
