2 things....FaninOz wrote:The Club need to keep strong and only off load those players we don't want, even if we give them away to save the salary. But we will never be in a position to challenge for Europe if we sell our best players for anything less than silly money, so 20mil for Cahill minimum in January if Liverpool and/or Chelsea are so desperate for a new centre half! If they wont pay that kind of money then keep him, if its true that Eddie isn't going to call his loans in then don't sell him at least until the summer.
1) He has a release clause so if that minimum fee is met then its up to Cahill.
2) Perhaps Coyle is keen to sell in order to buy? Selling at the optimum time is the judgement of the manager and chairman and will depend on what their plans are for the up coming market. As much as "keeping all our better players" would be a nice way forwards, the clubs strategy is built around buy low sell high, so we need to get used to that. I have total faith that Coyle will sort out whatever needs sorting.

Re: January transfer window...
The way our defence has been lately then selling Cahill would be no loss whatsoever. Might as well have a few quid in the bank. £10m and let's start talking.
Re: January transfer window...
I wouldn't go that far, but I don't think Cahill is having nearly the influence on our performances as say a year ago. It will not be anything like losing Anelka. I very much doubt he is the difference between our making Europe or mid table.East Lower wrote:The way our defence has been lately then selling Cahill would be no loss whatsoever. I think that is FiO's point - £20mill would be silly money - nobody would pay that. In other words - says FiO - unless the offer is so ludicrous as to defy logic (£20mill) - then we keep him.seanworth wrote:Doesn't Cahill get some say in this? 20mil? (FiO may have overlooked the existence of a release clause where we have to allow him to talk to clubs if they reach an offer-threshold - set somewhere, I believe, lower than £20million)

Aaaah. Should never post before my first coffee of the day. Still It's not like Cahill doesn't have any say though. I'm sure a nice pay increase would also be on the cards.

People are also overlooking that the longer we keep him the more his contract runs down and so does his value.thebish wrote:I think that is FiO's point - £20mill would be silly money - nobody would pay that. It is quite clearly part of the plan to sell Cahill and I guess it will either be January or the summer. IF Gartside and Coyle think they can get more in January than the summer I can't see any real reason why they wouldn't sell.
We can't be running around scared of selling players anymore. As a club its part of the new strategy.
Managers like Ferguson have had the knack of selling players (who the fans didn't want to go) at the right time down the years. We need to do similar.

Soon we will be able to put out a full squad of Davies. Might help in spreading the yellow cards about more evenly.David Lee's Hair wrote:Not a "Nixon" but a Nixon-paper...

I disagree with FiO - I think we should move while Cahill's star is unblemished - and if we get offered anything like £12mill - then we'd be daft not to take the cash. Who knows how much of that cash Coyle would get to spend - but it would surely give us resources to strengthen in more than one area... a promising young CB - and summat for BWFCi to drool about in midfield!

Re: January transfer window...
Bolton news report today that we will hold out for 5M if Elmander won't sign a new deal and the way it reads it sounds like he'll go to Liverpool IF they can give him some kind of guarantee on first team football. I guess we're still in there with a chance of giving him a new contract as he wants to stay in the area.thebish wrote:I was just helping Seanworth understand FiO..BWFC_Insane wrote:People are also overlooking that the longer we keep him the more his contract runs down and so does his value.thebish wrote:I think that is FiO's point - £20mill would be silly money - nobody would pay that. Again the way I read it is that OC would be happy for Elmander to sign but equally not distraught if he got 5M and was able to spend it in January.
Thing to remember is during the summer Coyle explained he might have to wait a while to "build a team in his own image" I guess selling a couple of players gives him the chance to do that.
Strangely I'm not that worried about it either way!

I think Curtis Davies is a good shout, even if we keep Cahill. We need cover there, and he cost £9m a couple of years ago, and seems a good character.

Good shout. Get him in on a loan with a view to a permanent move and I'd not be disappointed with that. Lad at work is a Leicester fan and reckons he has been their best player since coming back into the game. Would be a fitness risk but a loan to see how he gets on would suit us I reckon.
Re: January transfer window...
Linked again this morning with the Argie defender that I can't remember the name of according to the fountain of knowledge that is clubcall and talksport.
Pfffft.
Re: January transfer window...
His name is Gentiletti which might be difficult to remember but it certainly reminds me of something.TKIZ! wrote:Linked again this morning with the Argie defender that I can't remember the name of according to the fountain of knowledge that is clubcall and talksport.

Re: January transfer window...
Davies would be an obvious shout I think. A good footballing centre half who lost his way, but still has enough potential and time on his side to come good.
And BWFCI, I think you're reading far too much into the Bolton News article. It's not the enigma code, it's just a regurgitation of Nixon's story, which in itself is all assumption based off the single fact that Hodgson was there on Saturday.

Nixon prints what Coyle tells him, or at least the messages Coyle wants out there. The message is that Coyle is happy if Elmander stays but equally has options if he leaves and could use the money to get some of those options.

Re: January transfer window...
We play Liverpool in three weeks. I'd say it is more likely that they were scouting future opponents, and not BWFC Insane's crackers theories about other players.
Re: January transfer window...
Curtis Davies is an excellent player who's had some rough luck with injuries.
If we could sell Cahill for something close to his release clause (£17 million?) and bring in Davies for a relatively small fee, I believe that would represent very good business.
