Since the absurd size regs the fact is that we have to pay a 10p top-up if an ordinary stamp is affixed by the sender to a 'big' card (how many of us know how big that is?) - and a £1 charge for the 'admin expenses' - and, in my case, queue up at the the sorting office, in the cold, for up to twenty minutes - three times, and I've refused the last two, they can chuck them in the bin!
Yeah the systems `only` been in force since 21st August 2006 :hang: and at the time a size chart was posted to every address in the uk.

Also Most cards now have a little picture of an envelope on the back where the manufacturer details are. This states whether it needs a letter (i.e. normal postage stamp) or a large letter stamp.

Basically if it's larger than a standard A5 envelope or more than half a cm thick then you need to pay for a large letter. Not rocket science is it?

To be fair, they did spend a lot trying to tell everyone about the new system, and something had to be done to stop the Royal Mail haemoragging money.

If people still don't get it, or don't take notice of the guidelines still prevelant in every Post Office in the country, then more fool them.

Nature: that wonderful thing that we tend to append the name "mother". Forty-odd millimetres of rain in 20 to 30 minutes with the added splendour of a light display which would put the New Year Firework celebrations to shame plus the rumbling, bumbling and very loud thunderous applause accorded to the lightning by some sort of arial sprite who was passing through at the time. The result of this kerfuffle-come-brouhaha is that I've been without a computer (and thus Internet access) for a couple of weeks. Why am I angry? I was just getting used to life without the Internet (truly!) and now, after many hundreds of dollars - or quids - I'm back chatting with you lot again.

Having read through the posts from which I was denied access during my enforced absence I'm beginning to think that I should have accepted the insurance company's money and continued with my newly dicovered life.

Why do we do it?

What's the issue? Are you of the opinion that it is an increase from 17.5% to 20% is a 15% increase?

indeed - a 14.29% increase...

on a (pre-VAT) VATable item that costs £40

with 17.5% VAT then I would pay £40 plus £7
with 20.0% VAT then I would pay £40 plus £8

the VAT part of the transaction increases by 14.29% - NOT 2.5%

if VAT was increasing by 2.5% then VAT would be 17.93% and I would pay £40 plus £7.17

Its 2.5% as a percentage relative to the item you will be buying. Therefore its a 2.5% increase. Because VAT is an added tax, added to the item you are buying as a percentage of its value.

Happy to help.

My opinion as well. I can see both sides, but I'm in concordance with LK on this one!

Aye technically VAT itself is increasing by 14.whatever, but who cares about VAT, it's the price as a whole...

Still pedantic ire is what this thread is for! So carry on Bishy!

But technically it isn't, because it is a percentage of the value of the item you are buying. From january, you will pay 2.5% more of the value (or £1, as in bish's example) of the original item. VAT cannot be relative to itself, it has no value, it is calculated based on the value of something else.

Today I am angry about people wasting my time about VAT calculations.

Once upon a time there was a rich old Bedouin Chief whose wealth was measured in the number of camels he owned. This chief had 17 camels and on his deathbed he called his three sons together and told them that he wanted to share his camels out to his sons when he died. He wanted the first son to have half of his 17 camels, the second son to have one third of his 17 camels, and the third son was to have one ninth of the 17.

When the rich old Bedouin Chief died his sons got together to decide who should have the camels and in what proportion. The eldest son was not very pleased because half of 17 was not a whole number, in fact it came to eight remainder one. The second son was very annoyed because his one third did not work out either. His third share came to five remainder two! When the third son came to work out his share he was absolutely livid because his one ninth share did not work out either!! One remainder eight was not what he wanted to hear.

During their lives, when their father was alive, these sons never argued but now they were at each others throats, they just could not decide the proportions to divide up their father's legacy!! In fact they decided that they would have to kill some of the camels in order for them all to have their fair share but that would not leave them as rich as they would otherwise be. They picked up their swords and scimitars and were just about to start the massacre when their Uncle appeared on the scene, riding his own camel, just having heard of his brother's death.

He was very very annoyed because his nephews could not agree what to do; and they were just about to kill some camels, and probably each other too!! But he did appreciate their problem. So he said to them "I am old now and find it difficult sometimes to ride my camel. Here, have my camel and put it in with the others so you can fairly divide up your inheritance without any bloodshed. There will be 18 camels now."

So now there was 18 camels to be shared out. The eldest son had his share of half, which was 9 camels. The second son had his share of one third of the camels, which was 6 camels; and the third son had his one ninth share which was two.

Their Uncle was now very pleased, having helped the nephews to avoid any bloodshed. He watched them go away with 9 + 6 + 2 camels in their fair shares, the total camels being 17. So he got on his own camel, the eighteenth, which was left over, and rode it home!!!!!
