Re: One space or two...........
I hadn't realised that people purposefully put two in. I just thought they were crap at typing.

Re: One space or two...........
When I learned to type it was two, but the world has changed. I am certainly a one space man now. For some, apparently, old habits die hard or perhaps they suffer from an excess of patriotism since I read;
So much for those word processing qualification thingees.
.There have been a number of conventions relating to the spacing after a full stop. Some examples are listed below:
* One word space (French Spacing). This is the current convention in countries that use the modern Latin alphabet for published and final written work, as well as digital (World Wide Web) media.[6][7]
* Two word spaces (English Spacing). The two-space convention stems from the use of the monospaced font on typewriters—the intent was to provide a clear break between sentences. This historical convention was carried on by tradition until its widespread replacement by the single space convention in published print and digital media today.
So much for those word processing qualification thingees.

The source, please, Monty... My co-writer wants putting in his place, since he's still arguing with me about it after two plays produced, several drafts of each, and several hundred bad-tempered sulky corrections from me...Montreal Wanderer wrote:When I learned to type it was two, but the world has changed. Re: One space or two...........
Certainly you may prefer the older, or British variant, spelling as opposed to the rather more modern (admittedly American) ones, just as you may prefer two spaces after a full stop. However, I would argue this might not apply to proper names such as Wikipedia. Do you still use spellings such as oeconomics, praemium, and aenigma?thebish wrote:no - it's not - regardless of what they think....Montreal Wanderer wrote:

BTW, the OED now gives both encyclopaedia and encyclopedia as equally acceptable.

I don't care what is "acceptable" - 1001 wrong things are considered "acceptable" now - like handbags for men...
the "pedia" part of "Wikipedia" is supposed to reflect the end of the word "encyclopaedia"
and so - it is Wikipaedia.

Hmmm - I think you'll find the Romans pinched it (along with tons of other stuff) - in this case from the Greek diphthong (or digraph) alpha iota.thebish wrote:or, rather, Latin....Montreal Wanderer wrote:I surrender - it's all Greek to me...thebish wrote:I don't care what is "acceptable" - 1001 wrong things are considered "acceptable" now - like handbags for men...

One space. In fact until I read this thread I had never even heard of two spaces after a full stop.

Re: One space or two...........
there is no "correct" or not correct in this instance. The first (and over-riding/trumping) rule of writing or typing is surely readability.
the two-space habit is from typewriting - and fixed-width fonts.
with handwriting - do you leave one space or two? answer - neither - you leave whatever gap is appropriate and separates your sentences to make your prose readable.
with the staggering array of fonts out there for word-processors - some - not all - maybe not even many - but "some" - will be more readable with two spaces after a full-stop.
