Anyway, I'm sure the US military is right up there.

No idea, I'm nay speaking for or against it, just saying it is one of those 'facts' we pick up in everyday life, normally form quiz questions that sometimes turn out to be bollocks.

Quick Google search finds a few articles from 2004 that quote it as 'believed to be', nothing since. Still, it employs a lot of people.

As I say the key for me is directly or indirectly. If they're using an indirect figure, I'll wager it gets smashed out of the water by plenty others.

Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

He fibbed, but only slightly. It is now the fourth largest employer as a company but was indeed third until very recently. When I started working at the hospital in 2004 the NHS was third behind indian railways and the PLA.

Top 5 as of last year were:

1) Wal-mart: 2,100,000
2) Indian Railways: 1,632,659
3) CNCP (Chinese National Petroleum Organisation): 1,629,992
4) NHS: 1,626,000
5) China State Grid Corp: 1,533,800

If you include armies in the mix then the PLA is still the biggest employer in the world with 2,255,000 members. To put that into comparison the next biggest army on the planet, the Indian Army, has nearly a million fewer with 1,325,000. The Yanks can barely muster half a million.

That hurts.

I've got a seven year old newspaper that reckons they believed it. Given your response to a demand for proof is a resounding 'I can't' I reckon I've got more than you.

The NHS is a large employer and its size and the kind of service it is (being available everywhere 24/7) will always allow people to use the inefficiency charge.

but making that charge - and its big sister the "wasteful bureaucracy" charge isn't really an argument in favour of any of the changes currently on the table...

according to Colin Leys and Stewart Player, 2011. The Plot Against the NHS. Merlin Press, Pontypool. (a report that castigates all recent UK govts for undermining the NHS)...

In the US, administration swallows one third of health spending.

in the UK - largely as a result of John Major's implementation of the internal market - it rose from 3% to 14% of the total spend in the decade up to 2003.

Indeed and bureaucracy will always go up once you increase the level of contracting to external private organisations and once you introduce insurance and charging for services.

Personally, seeing the 5hite the Police have to deal with on a daily basis, I'm more than happy to contribute to them retiring with a decent, even generous, pension.
