i dont think we'd sign him on or anywhere near his current wage packet.seanworth wrote:I also think SWP will be a flop if he came here. Too many other areas to deal with and I fear his wage bill might make it impossible to address some of those areas of need.

Heard it on the grapevine by a not hugely unreliable source that enquiries had been madeohjimmyjimmy wrote:One of what? Have we been linked with him?TKIZ! wrote:Would Peter Crouch be one of those?ohjimmyjimmy wrote:If he comes and he's on wages in line with the others in our first XI then i'd welcome him...when all's said and done it's a bit of a sad day when we turn our nose up at possibly signing a player who's been capped 30-odd times by England (as long as its on our terms of course).
Pfffft.

He's just a posh Cameron Jerome. No thanks. Would rather spend the money on a striker who, you know, actually SCORES GOALS.

So? £60,000 per week and a free transfer over a 2-3yr deal is still cheap for someone half decent.clapton is god wrote:Yes, but he's reportedly turned down £50,000 a week and a half million sign on fee to stay with WH. Still if Everton are in for him...Lofthouse Lower wrote:Would be disappointed if we've not, at least, enquired after that Demba Ba on a free from Wham!

Lets have it then...what striker and for how much money, and for how many goals you expect in return.Lofthouse Lower wrote:He's just a posh Cameron Jerome. No thanks. Would rather spend the money on a striker who, you know, actually SCORES GOALS.

Realistically, who? In Bolton Wanderers price range and that?Lofthouse Lower wrote:He's just a posh Cameron Jerome. No thanks. Would rather spend the money on a striker who, you know, actually SCORES GOALS.

OK I'll play along - I'd take Maynard from Brizzle, I'd take any number of Championship strikers to be back-up. For first pick well I'll leave that to the management.
edit - same answer for TKIZ, innit

You said it, 'score goals'
Jerome and your mate Crouch scored a whopping seven BETWEEN them last year. Epic.

Dog shit, innit. Yet he probably wouldn't cost much less than £10m. Unreal, isn't it.

True, but not if (hypothetically) it's double the wage ceiling and Coyle gets half-a-dozen door-knockers asking for a wage hike.Lofthouse Lower wrote:£60,000 per week and a free transfer over a 2-3yr deal is still cheap for someone half decent.
I don't think we'll give SWP more money than anyone else at the club. And if it's part of a swap deal we may even get lumbered with less of a signing-on fee. Maybe.

I'd like to think you're right - I wouldn't say we are in dire NEED of someone like Phillips, but if we are to take him then he needs to realise that he's not the Phillips of £21m-to-Chelsea fame.
His 'dad' is a wanker too, we'd need to ban him from the Reebok.

No, actually you said it...but you didnt write (in the championship) in brackets.Lofthouse Lower wrote:You said it, 'score goals'

I didnt mention Jerome, i dont want him. But i would take Crouch, he has a career record of 1 in 3.5 , at the top level mainly, and an internaitonal record of better than 1 in 2. Since we go off stats and GOALS...why not?

Because he's pushing 30 (without checking) and represents no sell-on value, which for someone like us is essential. We had our fingers burned with Mandy, and we'd not be able to flog Crouch on for a third of what he'd cost two years down the line.
On that basis, ah'm oot

If the deal suited us of course.
But Crouch being Crouch, he'll think he belongs somewhere bigger and on his current wage, so it will all be moot no doubt.

He was a free transfer....and £45,000 over a three year deal, not £10m (ish) up front, higher wages and a similar length of contract.

The point being that we dont always have to 'sell on' - and if someone costs us 6m say (2m more than folk are happy we'd pay for rodrigo) and he scores goals to keep us in the prem, what would he owe us?Lofthouse Lower wrote:He was a free transfer....and £45,000 over a three year deal, not £10m (ish) up front, higher wages and a similar length of contract.
Just saying like..we got a bit burnt with elmander because we didnt know he was going to flop like he did and we basically lost a fortune without much in return.
