Aye, was part of the delegation that went out with Garty. I just flashed my The Wanderer membership badge and they let me sit in on negotiations.

Unfortuately I forgot the Carrs pasties as per the request from his dad. He was Efren and Jeffren all over the place.

So you should be.

the eagles thing would make sense given the speed at which we've shipped taylor out - 'right chris if i can get rid of one of them overpaid lads on the left do you fancy it' kind of deals, no parachute payments now for burnley etc. I haven't seen enough of him really, I imagine he's all step overs and no end product?

Mears though.....why would we sign him? Unless he's he Cahill replacement.....

I think Suarez is seen as a youngster we can make a profit on in a couple of seasons - and he'll play up top I imagine. Mind Rodrigo is a centre forward.

He does play right sided so again apologies, cover for Chungy is no bad thing

According to Wikipedia page, quote from Coyle, says he can also play as a striker and just behind the front two

this comment pretty much sums it up for me....

"A much bigger loss for us than gain for Bolton. Both players have their faults but all in all are cracking players at this level...

Above the Championship though, they are probably only lower Premier League standard, probably not enough quality for a team aiming for top ten or above. Mears will struggle defensively, Eagles doesn't have the consistency or strength for more than occasional flashes of quality against much better opposition."

Good business imo. Mears alone was being touted in the £3m-£4m bracket when Burnely were in the Prem. Now OC - please sign some goalscorers. The team as it stands will struggle to stay up.

I'll judge 'em when I see 'em
Eagles sounds like he needs to grow up; maybe a move and a season under Owen will work its magic.
RB was a problem spot last season - can't say Mears has been on my radar, but we cant afford to splash out cash on a position we have two players for...plus he can cover centre half as well. Ricketts is a better centre half.

Gots to be a centre forward in next though.

Ahh, Mears on the right and Ricketts in the middle/right.

Yep, just Jeffron plus maybe a loanee striker now and we're sorted :D

I'd imagine our sales/released wages would cover the mooted signings of Mears, Eagles, Reo-Coker, Jeffren and the one already confirmed Pratley.

If we sell Cahill that gives us room to go and buy a striker and a centre-back.

If we ('re forced to) keep Cahill, then Coyle may have to look for a cheap forward (can be done, see Odemwingie) or more likely a loan.

...or maybe we're not signing Eagles/Mears afterall.

From Darren Bentley, the Burnley press officer and general legend.

I'm not sure what to think with the Eagles and Mears rumour. To me it just seems like they will be cheap backup squad players, which we definitely need but it doesn't really fit into Coyle's "quality over quantity" stance.

I don't rate either that highly and think that now that our squad is so small maybe Coyle sees that he won't be able to get all the quality he wants (as there are quite a few positions in desperate need of quality and depth), so picking up a couple of cheap squad players that he has atleast worked with before and knows what to expect will help fill out the squad a bit.

That is of course if these rumours are true.

Why would either of these players want to take such a sideways step?

Are they though?
Is Mears better than Steinsson or Ricketts? (LL you don't have to answer that question).
Are we happy with Eagles as back up to Chungy? I know we desperately need back up but if God forbid Chungy is injured, is Eagles good enough quality to play week in week out?

Personally i think the answer is no to all of these but like i said before, it is only a rumour at this stage.

We can't expect to bring someone of real quality in as back-up to Lee. Eagles would be a pretty decent coup. Certainly beats having someone like Riga (repeat till fade) as back-up!

Mears, imo, is better than Steinsson. Like Steinsson, he's not exactly a terrific defender but I wouldn't put him down quite as inept. He's certainly better going forward. Very dangerous.

Agreed, only the Bolton (Evening) News have run with it as a story so far. The Daily Mail doesn't count

Coyle was the one who came out with the "quality over quantity" remark, so he either sees Eagles as quality or he has realised that we will take what back up we can get and gone back on that stance.

Personally i would like to see someone come in who could push Lee. Not take his place but atleast keep him on his toes. I'd like to see enough quality that we have guys challenging for positions right across the park but i guess that might be a bit too much to ask for at the moment. I'm just not that sold on Eagles but i trust Owen, so if he thinks he is good enough then so be it.

With Mears, well, i really don't know. It's debatable that he is any better than Steinsson or Ricketts. He is 28, so he is practically the same age as the other two so he wouldn't have that much of a resale value. If Coyle believes we really need a right back ( which i don't believe is a priority at the moment) then i think he should go all out to get Rhys Williams who he showed interest in earlier or maybe he should have looked at Kyle Naughton from Tottenham who just went to Norwich on loan. Atleast with Williams he is younger and is more versatile in that he can play in the centre of defence as well in the midfield and most importantly i believe he is quite a bit better.

Despite all this, Coyle has worked with both of them before so if he sees them as 2 guys who can improve our squad and challenge for positions then fair enough, i'll support it.
