Aye ... what were Arsenal thinking ?????
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Rioch's reign will go down as one of the greatest of this clubs' history. Was a magical time to be a wanderer.

Best. Game. Ever. Very closely followed by the Reading play off final.Bruce Rioja wrote:Abso-foo-kin-lutely. And on the back of the lean years that dated back to Ian Greaves.tripod wrote:Rioch's reign will go down as one of the greatest of this clubs' history. Was a magical time to be a wanderer.

I'd have him back in a heartbeat as Owen's assistant. He's 64, which is six years younger than Alex Ferguson, seven years younger than Aberdeen boss Craig Brown – and assistants can be older than the gaffer, especially if he's relatively inexperienced. I believe Rioch's also a non-drinker.
Been Rioch-reminiscing recently with a Boro fan who runs an excellent site called MiniBoro.com - it started off as an archive of the iconic Fly Me To The Moon fanzine, for which he was the cartoonist, but it's now branched out into some great artistic impressions of various players. Anyway, they love Rioch even more than us, and Question 23 in this Gary Hamilton interview is a nice little tale.

He signed Dennis Bergkamp. This alone means gooners remember him with fondness (of course he also signed David Platt and I am not at all bitter that for my 15th Birthday when I went up to the Arsenal store with my dad he (Dad not Rioch) made me get 'Platt' on my new away shirt cos it was cheaper then 'Bergkamp'...)

...and he asked Ian Wright "Why can't you be more like John McGinlay?". Which is legendary.

Currently reading one of Paul Mersons books which claims Rioch pretty much got the boot cos Ian Wright didn't get on with him...Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:...and he asked Ian Wright "Why can't you be more like John McGinlay?". Which is legendary.

something about wright not wanting to play on the wing IIRC . It's a shame rioch isnt involved in the game at present. It's quite possible that his expectation and discipline would rub a lot of players up now,not to mention chairmen.Good call as a wise head to help coyle but seems unlikely unfortunately.

The newish one, co-written with Matt Allen? Matt's a good mate of mine, a top bloke, a great writer... and a Spurs fan!Gooner Girl wrote:Currently reading one of Paul Mersons books which claims Rioch pretty much got the boot cos Ian Wright didn't get on with him...Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:...and he asked Ian Wright "Why can't you be more like John McGinlay?". Yeah, the new one! Not exactly high brow stuff but an amusing read and a good insight into what went on at Arsenal In the late 80's and 90's back when I was a teenage fan and cried my eyes out when he moved to boro!Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:The newish one, co-written with Matt Allen? Fantastic days, great times especially after those lean years since Greaves.
