I can't tease really - you'd thrash me in a race! Will take you on at Triple Jump though, if your creaking bones can handle it?!Harry Genshaw wrote:Gooner Girl wrote: Plus, you're another year older this year...I was avoiding that factor.

I haven't done any kind of athletics since I left school. What sort of distance do you get at triple jump GG?Gooner Girl wrote:I can't tease really - you'd thrash me in a race! Will take you on at Triple Jump though, if your creaking bones can handle it?!
I'm on the committee at my club now and the athletics side seems a bit neglected by the seniors as far as I can see. It looks like most adults go to meets to support their kids in the junior events and then get roped into chucking a javelin while they're there!

I wasn't much good. Mid 9's was about the best i managed. Senior Sussex champion once though, purely cos there was hardly any competition!Harry Genshaw wrote:I haven't done any kind of athletics since I left school. My problem was i started coaching aged 19 so all my training time got eaten up with that so never took it seriously. Am a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. Last senior womens league i went to i ended up doing triple and high jumps, 400m hurdles, 1500m, hammer, discus and both relays! Couldn't walk the next day! Have to say i do find it more enjoyable then straight up running though.
Thats great re being on committee at your club. We have a committee meeting tomorrow and i think it could be interesting. AGM coming up and some of the endurance runners have called for an EGM beforehand with the resolution being
"It is noted that the current HHH committee structure is not succeeding in EITHER attracting new committee members representative of active endurance runners OR bringing forward initiatives to address the needs of those members. Accordingly the following is brought forward for an EGM. It is proposed that a ‘shadow’ group of endurance runners be elected with the remit to develop a set of proposals by which a formal sub-committee of the club be established to manage all aspects of the club’s senior members’ interests in endurance and cross-country running.
Hmmmm... Club split?

Was that the one at Smithills Coaching House, Harry? What was the route? You didn't have to run up the Deane did you?Harry Genshaw wrote:Not too bad taGooner Girl wrote:How did the race go Harry?. Bit disappointed that I was 20 seconds slower than last year but I'm putting that down to the wet conditions and the booze I had last week. I've got the Blackpool half marathon next week which should be a good indication of if my marathon training is on track or not.
Well done Willy - excellent progress

It was Bruce. There is a hilly bit but not sure what the areas called. About a mile into it we skirted round the edge of Barlow Park then up a street on the estate and then into farm land before a long steady climb that eventually brought us back onto the main round back to the coaching house. 2 laps. £10 but you got a decent running shirt for that. Defo one for the future for youBruce Rioja wrote:Was that the one at Smithills Coaching House, Harry? What was the route? You didn't have to run up the Deane did you?

Ahh, you ran through Bluebell Forest and out onto Oldhams Estate then. 'The Deane' is Smithills Deane Road, the road that you turn off to get to the Coaching House. As a boy I used to live at the top of it and went to Smithills Grammar (which you'll have seen). It used to take me 5 minutes to get to school on my bike, and 45 to get homeHarry Genshaw wrote:It was Bruce. There is a hilly bit but not sure what the areas called. Club committee meeting tonight.
I'm not taking it as a compliment that our outgoing treasurer told me he is going to wish the incoming treasurer luck in dealing with my 'forensic examinations of the club accounts and rigourous questioning of him, every committee meeting' I fear he may be taking the pi$s slightly... Humph!
Also debating whether to sign up for a 10km race in may...

Was it one of these who "forensically" filmed your triple jumping ??Gooner Girl wrote:Club committee meeting tonight.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Wouldn't know! I'm asleep!

You, bobo, have a very suspicious and cynical mind when it comes to men's intentions.

Re: The athletics/running thread
I did 6.4k last night in a shade under 30 minutes. First time I'd been out running for ages, because it bores me to tears, but I feel pretty good this morning.

Re: The athletics/running thread
pretty good going boris! I agree - running is tedious - and that's probably one of the reasons (amongst others, to be fair!) that I couldn't see myself running 10K, 5K is as far as my boredom threshold extends... I'd much rather do 20K on the X-trainer and have the telly to watch as a distraction than 10K actual running! (I think the running - apart from shagging up my knee - is harder work though, and probably has a higher fitness benefit... though I'd be glad if someone said it didn't!!))boltonboris wrote:I did 6.4k last night in a shade under 30 minutes. Re: The athletics/running thread
PBs [most of them come from decades ago when I was in school]
100m ~13.5 sec (aged 15)
400m 59 sec (aged 18)
marathon 2 hrs 45 min (aged 21)
long jump 12 ft 8 in (aged 16)
high jump 5 ft 2 in (aged 16)
Triple jump 11 ft (aged 14)
pole vault 4m 10cm (aged 17)
javelin 62 ft (aged 20)
football - got picked for school teams 6 times in total - scored 1 goal (aged 12) in a match we won 8-1
As you can see I wasn't very good at chucking or jumping. The pole vault entry wasn't just my PB, it was the only successful pole vault I ever managed; I was really really shit at it but it fascinated me.
Triple jump, I couldn't even get into the pit, and ninety nine times out of a hundred I'd foul the hop or step bit. I must be the only person in the universe with a better PB for long jump than I had for triple jump.
As is evident I was only good at one type of event - long distance. I could canter for hours. Cross country was my idea of heaven for sports lessons.

And your triple, high and long jump distances in metres for the youngsters amongst us please?
