today he is wheeled out onto R5 for the phone-in - and is spouting forth about the shining beauty of every aspect of the British Empire. "Where would the Caribbean have been if we hadn't given them civilization and cricket." "We gave them lots of lovely buildings" "We gave them plantations"
Maybe they demanded them ?!?!

More seriously, all the revisionism in the World doesn't alter the fact that the slave-trade, the plantations and all that fell from it would have happened anyway. In our case we just got there before & beat to the game the French, Portuguese, Dutch & Spanish.

While none of that makes what happened at the time right it certainly is thin thining to suggest "if only we hadn't done it ... etc.".

Plus, there's not a living Englishman who'd Grandparents would have taken any active participation so constantly beating ourselves up over our history not only ignores the realities of the time, but also is as pointless as complaining about the price of apples in WW1.
the issue wasn't who did it - but whether we should actively celebrate that WE did it.

probably a sign that I'm getting old...

but R5's increasingly noisy programme trailers..

at the moment - an endlessly trailed advert for some kind of Fighting Talk special which seems ti have been "coming up" for the last 3 months..

the presenter yells over the top of (what sounds like) a selection of loud rock tracks and a gang of Bash Street kinds smacking dustbin lids together....

why???? :conf:

See it annoys me that when I go from normal BBC1 to BBC1 in HD the volume goes up. Why? I want more clarity of picture - that is all!

With HD, you not only get a better quality picture, you also get vastly improved sound.

Apparently Scotland Yard has banned the use of the word "blacklist" amidst fears of it being seen as racist. There are suggestions to use green/red list instead. Talk about making racism where none exists. :?

Do you think so? I just think they whack it up a bit. Furthermore, this HD malarky should come as standard, but then I suppose that there are mugs like me that'll shell out for it. :?

The proposal would surely upset the Treens and Sioux.

Free? Is that a detector van outside your house? ;)

Dunno - I have Sky HD so couldn't tell you what HD I'm specifically paying for and what I otherwise wouldn't.

There are currently half a dozen free-to-air HD Channels. There will be more, but the Sky's of this World will always hog what they can.

On mine (a Samsung Get-the fck-outta-here) a lickle button get's me 3D as well. Oddly, the volume drops when that's on.

The F1 is pretty amazing using that.

ut is it just me or is the volume more than a split second after the video ... so it always seems a bit out of sych ?

Does it squirt Fairy Liquid onto the corners? Send that safety car thing round in the opposite direction so that they all have to avoid it? Otherwise I'd suggest that said dull procession is a fecking long way short of being "Pretty amazing", snazzy TV or no!

I take your point ... up to a point ..... but all the cars are fitted with one, so any shunt, spin or overtake can be shown in 3D from the various driver's perspective.

It, therefore, makes it more fun than otherwise. Even if, in your view, that base level is low then it's a somewhat higher low.

I'm waiting for the camera-in-racket women 's tennis. Now tennis on TV ... that fckg IS boring.

Alternatively appropriately angled shoe cams in women's tennis could give a unique view of a fascinating sport....
