My son went to Dubai a year ago last August to tinker with the simulator at the CAE-Dubai Flight Training Centre. He mentioned it was quite warm in the few moments going from air-conditioned hotel via air-conditioned taxi to air-conditioned Centre. On his one day off he went to the beach and the nose piece of his glasses melted when he went for a swim. On the bright side, when he had to send a taxi to bring him a lite bottle of water, it only cost three dollars. So I imagine a clothes dryer might not be essential...

Sounds about right Monty. I've not experienced August here yet and not sure I'm looking forward to it; especially with Ramadam coinciding. It is really good here though. You can phone up the local supermarkets and ask them to deliver you a can of coke. Only costs you the 25p for the coke and no charge for delivery

On the drying side, it only takes about an hour to dry a pair of jeans outside. About 10 minutes for most other stuff...

He said it was in the mid-40s. To cool off on the beach he had to swim out a couple of hundred yards and dive down ten feet to get to colder water. He normally dries off in the sun but found he got wetter and wetter through sweating. Hence the need to send the taxi for supplies. I'd stay inside if I were you in August and you can of course go skiing.

I was a bit worried CAE has a flight training centre there serving the middle east. How many students don't care about landing one wonders.

Too hot to go for a swim Monty! I live inland a bit, so generally hotter here than the coast, but a little less humid. We're fluctuating most days between 45c and 56c on the garden thermometers. When in town it feels worse despite it being a good 4 or 5c less. The trick is to do stuff earlier in the day and sit on your arse for the rest of it

Not sure my knees are up to skiing, but I could go and see the penguins and cool off I'm hoping the missus can get a few days off so we can head to Salalah in Oman for a few days. Supposed to be really nice and much cooler in summer.

Apparently Pakistan and Australia are playing some cricket here in August Might have to go and watch as I can't imagine playing any outdoor sport in June - September here...

I'm not sure we can pass any sort of judgement on this without knowing the full facts. The kids clearly love and worry about their mum. Would it harm them even further to have her in jail and them split up in short term or long term foster care? Given the outcomes for children in care, i suspect it might. On the other hand, Social Services are now aware and supervising the family closely. Seems like the best possible outcome for me, even though its not ideal.

This. With Social Services on the job, and if the woman gets her act together, fine. If not then she knows the cost. The kids are the most important consideration.

Mother kept children in 'slum-like' house that smelt of urine
A mother who kept her five children in slum-like conditions has admitted five counts of child cruelty.

Social workers found children covered in dirt and rubbish strewn around the house in Wellingborough, Northants.

The "stench" of urine and vomit was so overwhelming one social worker was sick, Northampton Crown Court heard.

But the judge said he would not part the woman, who for legal reasons cannot be named, from her children, and gave her an eight-month suspended jail term.

When officers from social services entered the house in July last year they found the downstairs in an "appalling" condition.

'Collapsed and drunk'
There were pools of urine on the floor, excrement on a duvet in the living room and the fridge left open with mouldy food inside. There were empty food cans on the landing.

Adam Pearson, prosecuting, said: "The stench of vomit and urine was so strong that one of the social workers was physically sick after returning to the office."

Matters came to a head on 13 July when the woman, in her 30s, was found collapsed and drunk outside a fish and chip shop in the town.

Mr Pearson added: "When emergency services tried to revive her they found her children around her trying to rouse her saying 'Mummy wake up, mummy wake up'.

"They were very distressed."

The woman was later arrested and admitted five counts of neglect amounting to cruelty.

When the children's GPs were interviewed, they said the children had missed several appointments and were behind on their immunisations.

'Neglect is shocking'
Gary Shaw, mitigating, said the woman was now working with social services.

"I think that the penny has finally dropped. She realises just how close she is to going to Peterborough prison," he said.

Judge Michael Fowler, sentencing, said: "By 2011 matters had deteriorated and deteriorated so that your children were being brought up in conditions seen in the slums that were far too common before the Second World War.

"That was brought about by economic circumstances, but in your case it was brought about by your lack of ability to cope."

He also sentenced her to a two-year supervision order and a requirement to attend a 15-day course on education, training and employment.

"The neglect is shocking, but if the social services are not going to take the children away from you then I'm not taking you away from the children," the judge said.

Has he asked them why? Did they just find out he drives for a living for example? There is presumably a reason that only they can provide. And calm down - it's not good to get exited at your age....

Also if, as happened to me, he has been involved in an accident (which wasn't his fault) and he's claiming from a third party's insurance he will face a higher premium as he is entitled to claim from his own insurance should the third party's insurer not pay up. These things he knows to do Monty, so not known yet. Lots of thing in this country right now seem to be based on "think of a number" re-pricing and things jumping up in price overnight is par for the course, but a £350 jump in a year is just a bit much.....and I'm calm,just feel sorry for the young these days.

He's turned forty now Gary and has driven in quite a few jobs. Always had good references and never, to my knowlege, been involved in an accident. His car is a basic Ford Focus, hardly Formula 1 class.

I interviewed a young woman recently for the benefit of her insurers. She had been involved in a collision whilst driving her Audi Q7. One of the things they wanted to know was why she had recently taken herself off the policy and put her mother on. The answer was simple. At renewal her policy had gone up from £7000 to £14000 and as a poor student she could no longer afford it. The family were not without a bob or two.

Car insurance: premiums have gone up across the board in recent times. Probably just a case of this happening to him and yes in many case they have doubled or worse.

If he rings the company they may well reduce it, especially if he finds a cheaper quote elsewhere from another and threatens to leave.
