Re: The athletics/running thread
Just played a pre-season friendly - only 70 minutes as we had roll on, roll off subs but that was enough. First 20 was the worst, it was SOOOO hot and the shirts are horrible. (i was wearing a large men's which meant i didn't actually really need shorts as it came down to my knees.) I really am far too unfit. Still, we won 6-2!

I'm assuming that's metres.Gooner Girl wrote:So first athletics match in a long time and only the 2 events. I was pretty rubbish!
High Jump went out at only about 1.25
Not being funny or owt, but isn't that about 4 feet?
That's not much higher than a hurdle.

My clothes horse is 1.32 meters high (I've just measured it). There are loads of times when I've got home bladdered and done a massive belly-flop onto it and then woke up with all sorts of cuts and bruises (and creased clothes).Wandering Willy wrote:I'm assuming that's metres.Gooner Girl wrote:So first athletics match in a long time and only the 2 events. I reckon I could dive over that without a run up.

How easy would it be to go from relative lazy bastard to 10k?
For some reason, after someone's Facebook status update, I want to do the Great Manchester Run.

Depends on your age, relative health etc.
GTE and others are probably better equiped to advise but FWIW i went from lazy smoker to 5k in about 6 weeks. Got injured after that so didn't follow through to 10.
CAPS just did it though if IIRC.

Ach, piss off you lot. In relative terms to my height i can probably jump way higher then you old gimmers - and i'm out of shape. Only did it for a point for the club. I don't pretend to be a serious athlete.
Would be amusing to see you all bending your body round a high jump bar without injury. In my hey day, i could jump nearly as high as my shoulders. Like to see you lot get your bum as high as your shoulders when you jump.
Its all relative, and as GtE will tell you, i'm a short arse...

If I might intrude into your athletic commune for a minute GG, my dad was army pole-vault champion way back in the stone age. He cleared about twelve feet something or other using a bamboo pole (sort of thing they have down the middle of rolls of carpet) and landing in sand.Gooner Girl wrote:Ach, piss off you lot. Seriously AG, if you are willing to put in the training and run at least 3 times a week, you should make quick progress. Google Run England and see if they have any groups near you or download the podcast that Bish, Bruce and others have used.

Sounds impressive Tango, especially the landing in the sand bit! Pole Vaulting is something thats forever on my to do list to learn but we don't have the facilities or coaches at our club to do itTANGODANCER wrote:If I might intrude into your athletic commune for a minute GG, my dad was army pole-vault champion way back in the stone age. Yeah, think I am serious about it. Will give that a look.

How many 30 minute sessions?
Does it matter what speed you do?

Start with something like this.
http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/racing/si ... le/67.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can always skip ahead a few weeks if you find it easy.

The trick is to start slow. If you do too much too soon you WILL injure yourself. At the moment it's about time on your feet so build up until you can run for 30 mins without stopping. Your pace will come with it.
You would improve quicker with a group so look for a local running club that welcomes beginners.
If you're doing it yourself then download a programme from Runners World. You'll know yourself if it's too easy and you can skip ahead.
Also, register for Parkrun. It's a 5k race every Saturday morning in a number of parks in the UK. That will give you an idea of where you are in your peer group and set a marker for your training.
