There are other candidates, but for me he should be a shoe in for sports personality of the year!
You're probably right there......think it was Wiggins before this.

:? But, don't you need a personality in order to win that?

by the tme it comes around the Great British Public (JCLs) will have entirely forgotten all about the olympics and the paralympics (apart from perhaps Farah and Ennis and maybe Wiggins) and will be drooling over the idea of honouring yet another wanky premiership footballer, and sobbing themselves to sleep because their favourite celebrity tit got voted off celebrity come dancing....

Quality was the greatest but incredible entertainment and drama in that match. Murray stepped up his game in the 5th and became really aggressive dictating those points. First couple of sets neither one wanted to take a risk.

I don't think there is a sport that is producing such intensity and drama as the latter stages of the grand slams atm. Those top three guys are arguably the best ever, Murray might join that list if he bags a few more. Most men's grand slam finals outside the French in recent times have been just exhilarating. Probably witnessing the best era ever.

He has a great sports personality, yes.

Desire to win, drive, ambition, ability to come back from continual disappointments, copes with pressure, works tirelessly to improve.

I think he is a role model we should hold up to people in this country and say 'this is what we want from our sports men and women'.

I'm not saying he WILL be picked by the public, he probably won't be in olympics year. As said, Farah, Ennis, Ellie Simmonds, Wiggins etc etc

I don't particularly care, either who it is. I just think for me given that it was his 5th final and given the work he's put in to get to this even 2 years ago, no way could he have lasted out there, and given the quality he's having to beat (Before the match I think Djokovic had lost once at flushing meadows in 3 years), and the history he's been fighting against, he's the sort of person who embodies what we should be aiming for in British sport.

He's literally dragged himself on to this standard through sheer hard work and grit and desire. He's not arrived there 'naturally' by any means.

Lest we forget Murray is a double Olympic medallist this year, as well!

I can't choose who I want to win this year. Incredibly tight. What Wiggins achieved with SKY was phenomenal, what Farah did was monumental as was what Murray did. Not even considered Ennis or Simmonds, which says something in itself (and no, not chauvanism)

Wiggins or Murray for me.

Now Im more convinced than ever that the entire Team GB Olympic and Paralympic men and women will win a huge one off SPOTY award. How do you say one is more deserving than another out of all these choices?

Not a fan of Murray but having done what he's done to win I've got a lot of respect for him. I never thought he'd do it.

For Djok in particular, you have to do so much to win every point it's ridiculous.

He was probably helped by not having to beat either Nadal or Federer in the semi final too, facing one great after another must have been a mental struggle.

good post Dr.Karl ^^ Although I tend to only watch from the 1/4 or 1/2 final stage, mainly for time reasons, it's also because these guys breeze through the early rounds unlike the women. I think it's a far superior situation though compared to the women's game where the matches are over in 90 minutes and there's no equivalent top level rivalries - there's nothing to buy into.

They should change the format this year and just have a programme of celebration.
