I'm spending the afternoon mooching around newspaper articles from 2010 slating Cook. I was one of his biggest critics back then, but how things have changed!

There is not a lot wrong with that though. He wasn't saying Cook was rubbish, but that he was in poor form at the time.

Aye, didn't he knock a hundred and plenty in the first test? I remember that Boycott had made an absolute cock of himself, as per usual.

Quite. I'd criticise the headline but then I wouldn't be surprised that a sub-editor wrote that. Cook had a flaw in his technique at the time and was regularly found out by the Pakistani bowlers. In the last Test, after that article was written, he scraped and scratched his way to a hundred and hasn't looked back since (thanks, you'd have thought, to a lot of hard work over the autumn). His record prior to that summer was on the whole outstanding so I don't think there was any likelihood of him being dropped for the Ashes tour. However, at the time, it shouldn't be a surprise that pundits were suggesting that the squad might require three specialist openers.

Going very well this, India currently 166-8 needing 207 to avoid the follow on.

Every cricket column from that time was about Cook, be it by Hughes, Atherton, Agnew, Boycott, Nicholas...... Not just Boycott. Cook was shocking that summer. Horrible to watch and lovely to bowl at. He got over it incredibly well and hasn't looked back

Which given that he made a massive amount of runs in his next international, would it have been correct to drop him or that the selectors stood by him and quite clearly made the right decision.

Boycott bollox for me.
