My iMac has run faultlessly for 2.5 years but this morning I did something stupid and crashed the buggering thing. I was trying to use an app to sort iTunes out and accidentally dropped icons for 6000+ music files onto the desktop, which froze the thing dead. No amount of rebooting would get me beyond a frozen screen and after exhausting my limited technical know-how I thought about Apple support, not expecting they would be available today but maybe I could get support over the next few days.

I went through the support system on my iPad and pressed the button for callback.

My finger was still pointed at the button when the phone rang. Not two seconds had passed and they were ringing me back!

I spent an hour on the phone to a lovely woman in Greece who guided me through the process of repairing the disk and then getting to a safe boot to restore a Time Machine save. That went through what it needed to do whilst I was at the game and I've come home to a perfect working iMac again.

That is what you pay extra to Apple for!

For me, this is technology. I'll just mention it in case I disappear off the net.

My pc is on its last legs and I just got a new . Not brand new but one from my daughters office. She works in law and they change/update their equipment regularly so she was given her old one which is a Dell and apparently a good unit. She's delated all her stuff from it of course so that's not a problem. I also have a new router coming from Virgin so, not being your actual computer expert I'm hoping all will go well when I start unplugging/re-plugging wires etc all together. Not quite sure how I format the old unit so any help/advice would be gratefully received. I can't do anything till the router arrives( possibly tomorrow/Monday?).

Bear with me here, I'm in the dark. Not sure I do, I just thought that was a safety issue and advisable. If not needed, then fine. The router I have ( two actually, linked together, which Virgin installed, is okay, but my grandson recommended getting a more modern one. He actually rang Virgin and arranged it) is fine. As far as I know Windows is already on the new unit, not sure which version, I'll have to check. Currently I have the XP version. My main worry was whether the new unit would automatically pick up the service provider, which I've since been assured it will. Hope this is the case. I'm just being a bit nervous here, probably for nothing.

I think it'll be fine Tango - I wouldn't format it - and the windows version on the new unit will be a more recent version from XP - and it will automatically recognise the new router - and you'll be back on here before KD has scored another goal!

I'm fine with all the basic stuff, but my biggest problems have always been working for a computer firm where if anything went amiss you picked up the phone and an IT guy sorted it in five minutes. I do have help I can call on if I blow it up so I'm probably worrying for nothing. Here's hoping.

Is it pretty straightforward to get it to do the above ??
I always thought it would be a bit too advanced for me to start meddling with things I know nothing about.

It might be advisable to reformat the old hard drive if you are throwing out the old computer. The old hard drive may contain personal information about you, your family, your bank account, etc. that could be easily accessed by someone picking up the unit. Reformatting should wipe this out to a large extent (you can only wipe things out completely by overwriting each sector half a dozen times but I wouldn't worry about that level of security).

I love the SkyGo app for the GENERIC TABLET. Means I can take the footy, soccer Saturday, the darts or whatever and watch on the shitter, in the bath, in bed, next door where they don't have sports, or while I'm xboxing, I can watch sky movies or whatever when I'm in London too - belting.

Fantastic difference in the Dell unit. Old one was E Systems and needed a shovel of coke every hour or so. This is fast and has Windows XP Pro. Life's good and we're rolling again.
